B-52s is Shakespeare of the 1980’s…. Twelfth Night or Much Ado About Nothing with musical accompaniment and southern rap. Ima floored. The brilliance of the music is just amazing. I want this album on repeat for eternity after I leave this world.

This great album was the first I listened im my life and I still find it the best ever from the B's. "Whammy Kiss" is my favorite, but "Legal Tender" was a success here in Brazil. 30 years ago, they came for the first "Rock'n Rio Festival" and I saw them on tv. Since then, this is my favorite group, as the same way was John Lennon's favorite too. I got ALL albuns by now. I just love this band and this album. Excellent! (Y)

Yes, this is so. I remember when Whammy! came out almost everyone in the industry said they were disappointed, sales were weak, and Butterbean, Big Bird and Queen Of Las Vegas were holdovers from the even weaker previous Mesopotamia album. Then three years later Ricky died. I think Whammy! is their greatest.

I Still have all their albums on LP, well all but FunPlex and Time Capsule which I have on CD. Loved to dance around the house playing the bass to them before going out dancing and bar hopping in the 80's. Still remember jamming to Butter Bean and a good friend of mine was jumping around in the house dancing with a bb rifle and shot out the patio sliding door. Now that I think about he never paid for it....

Who cares about that meaningless place. It was just started by some random guy with ties to some industry guys who started inviting the artists to come and they came. It's by no means a legitimate honor like sports hall of fames. Music is way too subjective.

Joe If you’re truly going chronological in listening to their records, Mesopotamia goes between the first two & then this. That EP is real departure as well, so Whammy won’t seem like such a big jump. And as much as I enjoy the David Byrne production, this is less busy at times and let’s their sounds breathe more like they did before. Plus, they couldn’t help but evolve and try new things. Some of their best stuff imho

On initial pressings of the album, the seventh track was "Don't Worry", a cover version of the Yoko Ono song "Don't Worry, Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow)". However, the song was removed during later pressings due to legal issues. On subsequent pressings, the song was replaced with "Legal Tender"'s B-side, "Moon 83", a remake of their earlier track "There's a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)".

Their signature sound, Ricky Wilson playing his own twist on aggressive surf rock, is largely absent, and some of the songs aren't the best, but the sound they get out of that Korg SB-100 bass synth (visible in the Legal Tender video) is absolutely killer. This album is a great example of what that machine can do. It gets me every time.
@olivermilke77566 жыл бұрын
cindy+kate are no machines i guess
@Blank_Frank5 жыл бұрын
Most of the synth sounds you're hearing on "Whammy" comes from the Roland Jupiter 8. Most of the drum machine work was programmed on an Oberheim DMX. The SB-100 was mostly used on the first couple of records.
@channelvessel Жыл бұрын
I was recently thinking about Ricky Wilson’s unique harmonic playing. It helped to define their otherness. I would love to know his approach to chord creation. My fanaticism reduced to moderate fan levels when whammy was released so I’m now really enjoying it as a great sounding record. Song for a future generation is truly prophetic of the banality of our social media world . Ricky obviously Sadly Missing from later stuff 😢 such a brilliant collective band.

I love this album. Calling it their best is... Well... inaccurate. You may have a special place in your heart for the time and the music. Musically i thinj the b-52s best work would be a combination of cosmic thing, good stuff, and the time capsule originals. I love old B-52s But i think the brightness of the later albums is really inspiring. Of course, there are moments of greatness on every b-52s album. I think queen of las vegas is the greatest moment here. The wisdom and sarcasm of their sense of humor is so beyond the average person. These are staggeringly intelligent people.

Amazing how we all have different tastes while loving the same group. I can't even listen to these songs -- sounds like total improvisation over really cheap drum machines. Just dropped by to give this a second listen after all these years and having grown to love the band and I just can't listen to it. The commercial middle-ground of Funplex and Cosmic Thing, and even recent solo offerings from the girls eat this for lunch in my ears.
