Great to see another review finally of the Bülk. The advertising slogan is the one I sent to Jan right before he sent me my Bülk. He wanted to put “the real muscle car” on it, but I thought that would confuse people and make them think it is actually a car with a motor.

Please allow me to make up for your stunning lack of enthusiasm about the Bulk which I blame on the bad weather on your first ride. What I like about my Bulky: the hotspot lamp on the top because of my night blindness, the air suspension because we have a lot of cobblestones in the small towns around here, the humongous shoulder width that I don´t need but is appreciated anyway, the motorhelmet visor, the compactness (Short!) because that makes it easier to store and despite this small exterior, I still fit very comfortably with 192cm and size 48 feet. Although I must admit, the feet do not have much wriggle room left. No space for big shoes and sandals. Then there is the stifness of the whole body and frame, the incredible acceleration, the steering precision, the speed both in built-up area and the open road, the stability, the good accessability of the pedals and the derailler. The feet protrusions occasionally touch the more agressive speed bumps, but there is no hard contact. The only real faults I could find is indeed the stupid positioning of the front shifter and the side windows are too low for me. There is also limited cargo space all the way in the back because of the constricted build of the rear. But that is quickly forgiven and serves to limit the amount of stuff I take with me on travels. I have been riding just 1000km up till now, but I am sure already that I like the Bulky the best of the many ( I lost count) velomobiles that I have owned in 25 years time. It is a thoroughly fun ride. Period.

As the Season Progresses, I think some interior temperature measurements from various sections (front, mid and rear) would be helpful when adjusting the airflow from the very cool adjustable ventilation tunnel as well as the NACA duct and visor when in open position. Curious as to how it handles the inevitable fogging or how you treat it with both visors. Also the pressure ratings on the Air suspension and how it's measured or just 'hit or miss' inflation. Excellent Content and detail on this Episode.

The Bülk is the next little step towards perfection. However here I have some points: I think the rear suspension is over-damped, so it can loose ground contact in a corner on cobble-stone pavement, for example a round-about, so I will change the race-tyre to a gravel tyre. My Bülk is the BMK000. And: my hood is in production since weeks, but it does not matter, because I am fast enough without. I think I will make my seat a little more tight and with hinges, so you can flap it to reach the luggage. And I don't like unexpected crosswind especially in my Bülk. Please deliver more from Your Bülk testings.

curious about that top vent if it is meant to blow air directly on the visor to help with fogging, similar to the vents on ski goggles? I would also add adhesive-backed foam or rubber door-seal around the visor and the access hatches to prevent water ingress

Nice first look. Looks like your collour is famous already, if they're sending you a test bike in orange. The dealer where I ordered my Quest told me about those black reflective stickers. Thought about them, but I hadn't been able to look for photos of them on a red velo before I decided to go with the standard collour. Maybe I was a bit quick to decide. Not going to change now though. Maybe I could still try them in the future, if the regular ones start pealing of... If it isn't time for a new velo by than.

Great introduction video on the Bülk. I received my Bülk last month and have already lost the derailleur cover. Seems the velcro wasn’t enough to hold it on some of the bumpy sections of road. On each of the side windows, (and maybe on the front visor) use a Universal Helmet Shield Anti Fog Film, Clear Visor Lens Insert Fog Resistant (amazon) I use them on all my non-pinlock helmets. Works great. They are a pinlock without the pinlock and the rim has a clear adhesive that sticks great, but stays with the visor insert, if you move it. Two of mine are five years old and have been in three helmets and still work.

Those are worn bearings in your drill. Have you been using it as a sander? That sort of heavy-duty prolonged use is not what the drill was built for, and is what causes this. I have one that's been doing that for 30 years. (Used it as a sander while restoring multiple boats.) You'll note that if you barely squeeze the trigger, so that the chuck hardly turns, it doesn't turn steadily; it jams and releases as it rotates. What I do is, I squirt WD into the bearings every time I use it; several times, if I use it a lot. Go blind with the straw into the motor vent(s) on the side; do your best to hit the bearings under the brushes, and give it a few good squirts. Squeeze the trigger to distribute the lubricant, and note how the squealing sound diminishes. That tells you you've hit the target. If you have access to the rear bearing, above the grip on the back, blast that good, too. If your drill is old enough that the bearing is just sitting there, fully accessible, use a good machine oil to lubricate it. (On some more recent drills you can drill through the plastic housing to create this lube point.) Wipe off the black crap that dribbles out during use. This stuff is good news; that's the fluid flushing fine grit out of the bearings. After this, you'll get rotation sooner when you barely squeeze, the chuck'll turn smoother (though not like it would if the bearings were still round), and it won't scream at you at high revs. Best of all, you can keep the drill functioning for a long time, as long as you're consistent with this pre-launch routine. Thanks for the video!

As i have everything I need 15 minutes away on a regular bicycle, a velomobile is completely useless to me. Even if i had to travel further away the bicycle lanes we have here are very narrow and bumpy for a velomobile and riding on the road is pointless because i would be stuck in car traffic. @@mnveloguy Granted, on asphalt roads, good or bad, it does not make a noticeable difference, but on Dutch brick roads the steel springs are too slow to react and you may find yourself facing the other way in a slanted corner because the rear wheel has started to drift and lost contact with the road. It's like riding on ice. But you are not safe on asphalt either, because in the USA you have a lot of rumble strips who separate the road and the shoulder. I participated in ROAM2011 when we crossed the USA with velomobiles and we had never heard of rumble strips. We had some bad encounters and flipovers before we learned to cross them at an angle as quickly as possible. Once I found a rumble strip over the whole width of the road at an intersection. There was no way to avoid it and I noticed too late. I happened to have rear air-suspension installed as a test but the rear still drifted a bit from side to side. When you cross over the rumble strip with a three-wheeler you really want to have that air suspension. There are some examples here on KZfaq as well of uncontrolleable flipovers from velomobiles. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMmIY9GntNO7o5c.html That alone makes air suspension worth the extra hassle of having to check the air pressure occasionally. In the Netherlands I really enjoy the extra comfort, speed and safety of the air suspension, especially on brick roads. I did not like the Risse air shock I used to have in the Mango since they turned out to be too unreliable for long tours but the new air shocks used by the Rumanian velomobile factory seem to be ok.

On efficiency side I believe this one will perform well and convince some efficiency oriented people to velo. However, from on practical side I think whole velomobile concept is running cycles instead improvement. If you want to put people into cars for you need to substitute car and not make another faster bike. Velo needs to be doubleseater, needs to protect from rain and needs to have luggage space, so to fulfill it in short form more upright position is needed. I would rather see some kind of EAV vehicles adapted for urban mobility roles.

How about just riding an ordinary ebike and wearing rain gear? I don't think velomobiles are primarily intended for transportation.

Horses for courses. Velomobiles are super good for commuting longer distances without electric assistance. Distances of 20 - 50 km suddenly become very doable without reaching for a 45 kph e-bike. Small electric cars also exist for those who prefer a big vehicle..

First thing I would do , is add three 1000 watt motors to the three wheels , then put batteries balanced for the bike in front and back and a couple solar panels ........ then you have the best of both worlds ....
@philipk4475
@philipk4475 7 ай бұрын
I think you need to do the maths. This thing can hit 50 kph with less than 200 W of pedaling power. I'm not sure what you would do with 3 kW. Now add those heavy motors, batteries and solar panels (you think they're really going to provide you with any kind of recharging capability?) and you've got a vehicle which is now probably twice as heavy, once you consider all the necessary reinforcements.

I noticed their shop is a a bit old-school-everything-by-hand kind of production and it's unfortunate that they don't take advantage of a 3D printer to make some useful parts like air ducts and windshield seals & other small parts to increase the overall value of the velomobile. I'm looking at the 10 000$+ price tag and getting a DIY-prototype rough-around-the-edges vibe rather than a finished commercial product.

You may need 1kW motor if your home or work is on top of a steep mountain. But if there’s no big hills around where you live, then the motor is just useless and will slow you down.

My guess on the price to be 10K was accurate to within 2.5%. Make it $5K with a-la 105 components, or a step below 105 components, and I will the the first in line to buy it.

@Laid Back Racing I did not say it would be easy. If they truly want velomobilling to be more widespread, the engineers need to come up with ways to reduce production costs. If they want it to remain a niche product of no interest to the general public, no need to change anything. For 5K, I would accept the DIY/innovative aspects of the product (derailleur cover falling off etc -- see comment below). Not for 10K, sorry.

@@laidbackracing5559 He´s right: Velomobiles are THE way for commuting, and it HAS to get A LOT cheaper, Milan, Quattro, Quest, all rubbish, if the price doesn´t come down 2-4 times... The Chinese will solve also this problem, I guess, as with anything where others don´t have the balls.

The thing is there are "cheap" velomobiles, but either you're too late (the allewedder is no longer in production) or you have to be in Australia for a rotovelo

Have any of you complaining about the cost ever tried to build a velomobile? Materials alone cost close to $5k. Having built one myself, I can tell you that it is very time consuming. It takes the factory about 6 weeks to assemble one. The employees need to be paid, the factory needs to be able to afford the equipment to build them. The designers needs to make a living as well. Despite all of that, Velomobiles still cost less than cars and can easily replace one.

@@mnveloguy If a high-tech racing-bike-frame of 900gr costs under 1000$, then 10000 for a velomobile is too mcuh. A velomobile, no matter how good it does its job, is still a "crude" creation compared to a racing-bike-frame. The problem of velomobiles is that they are build in Holland and Germany, instead of China. Rotovelo is too heavy, and Alleweder isn´t that aerodynamic at all (a velomobile´s single superpower, but a crucial one)

Why? It doesn’t make any sense if you don’t live in mountains. I live in flat land, we have no big hills. So adding 8 - 10 kg of motor and battery would just make this thing slower than it is now.

@philipk4475 7 ай бұрын
A small a/c unit weighs around 5 kg. Add the required batteries and you're looking at increasing the weight of the velomobile from 26 kg to the mid 35 kg +. That's a questionable value proposition. For that weight I would much rather have an e-bike pedal-assist motor and battery for climbing hills faster, because that's where the reduction in air flow will really be felt. If you're really desperate for more air, you can always run with the visor up or the top hood completely removed.
@manoman0
@manoman0 7 ай бұрын
I see your point. An a/c unit is not only comfort but rather a safety option. Opening the visor is not the same as having conditioned air supply. But, yeah, if I had to choose from one or the other, it were e-assist. Then again, having e-assist would allow for additional weight for an a/c. :)@@philipk4475
