Recumbent bikes are what you get when you throw the UCI bike rulebook out the window. Built with aerodynamics in mind, recumbents are true racing machines, able to hit average race speeds of more than 30mph! Hank pays a visit to the British Human Power Club to enter into the weird, wacky and wonderful world of high-speed recumbent bike racing!

@@kjeldsloot Used to travel down to PortlandOR from Tacoma WA for the Human Power Competitions... an absolute blast of a time. A lot of people would let you try out their rides, I got to try damn near every velomobile that was in production and raced my Rans Tailwind one year and my Greenspeed GTO others. I wasn't competitive against the other recumbents but just being in the races was fun. I feel his pain getting lapped when you are going faster than you've ever gone on a UCI legal bike... but you have a streamliner blow past you at over 50mph being piloted by a retiree. The weird homebrew craft were some of the most fun... notice all the shots in the video of the racers all with ridiculous smiles on their faces. No big money on the line, just a lot of fun and competing against your own best or buddies.

Depends on distance an climbs on the route. I did a video comparing my road bike, velomobile, and regular recumbent trike. Wen it came to short distance the road bike couod accelerate off the line faster and be gone but once the velomobile got rolling its easier for the velomobile to maintain its speed. I have ridden with a group of roadies with my velomobile. I was overall faster than they were but they would catch me on the climbs but i would leave them in the dust on my descents. On the flats riding a velomobile is the same as riding in a pack of cyclists. So i dont think they woukd catch him in a group effort as theyd be pretty evenly matched unless there was any slight climbing then theyd catch him.

This video was TOO SHORT! More of recumbents, they are such a fascinating style of bikes and well, I do love that at the end, it's still all 100% human powered, you just can't get any better than that. Makes me more interested in looking into a club locally.

Agreed. In particular, it would be interesting to see some graphs of power vs. time, power vs. speed, power vs. drag coefficient, power vs. number of wheels, drag coefficient vs. # of wheels. Just a bunch of stats about that sort of thing. And it would be nice to have some discussion about how practical velomobiles are in the real world, taking into consideration things like places to park them, how to lock them, theft rates, how to carry them up stairs, and how to transport them long distances. I'd also like to see some discussion of power expenditure vs incline in a velomobile vs a road bike and of the maximum speed attainable in a velomobile without causing sweating, at a range of given temperatures and humidity levels. And cost-savings of a velomobile vs a car for the same commute. There's really just a whole host of topics to cover with these things; they have a lot of good potential video content with these that they could use in the future.

@@tonyk8368 Valid points - It's horses for courses really. With a lot of climbing you'll be faster on a light upright bike. Everywhere else (flat, downhill or rolling hills) a recumbent should be faster. I had a velomobile (Quest XS) and it is the best toy I've ever owned. Very fast (easy to hold close to 30MPH on the flat). You stay dry and warm in winter. Sometimes a bit too warm in summer... For me though it was impossible to leave it anywhere - They are fragile and easily damaged and unfortunately here in Hemel Hempstead if I'd parked it outside a shop it would have been stolen and/or wrecked in about 10 seconds. If you live in a nice area or have secure parking at both ends of your journey they are fantastic. I have a van so transporting it wasn't a problem. I ride a mixture of upright bikes and recumbent bikes and trikes. I love riding all of them. I just pick the one best suited to where I'm going to ride and the people I'm riding with. Everyone needs N+1 bikes... ;)

Nice to see a "proper" racing HPVs featured. You need to check out the 6-24 hour team races in Australia - that is what the orange Trisled Aquila is designed for. I used to race in a school team and our trike (custom fairing, heavily modified Aquilla 2 chassis at the time) struggled to go under 40km/h - lots of fun and formed most of my life for years 11 and 12 at school :) If you want to know more, have a look for the Victorian HPV Series, the Australian International Pedal Prix or the Maryborough Energy Breakthrough (there others as well, these are the biggest ones / series). Many competitors generally make a highlights video.

On a NoCom? Go way to catch a pedal and crash a $14K machine. I'm stunned sometimes at how nice the recumbent community is. I have 6 recumbents in my garage, a Rans Tailwind, a Rans Wave, and 4 (yes... 4) Greenspeed GTO trikes. One of those is my son's friend's trike who is also waiting on delivery of a Quest velomobile to be his new commuter vehicle for his 15 mile 4am commute to a couple of towns over. I seriously want a velomobile, but had my job at a local college eliminated a couple of years ago. You can pedal through corners in a velo or on a trike. Only so far you can lean and pedal on a low racer without ending up eating asphalt. I am surprised at how low his speeds were in the races though, even coasting corners. I'd have expected him to be around 30mph average on the Nocom being an ex pro racer in good shape. His times are around what I'd expect myself to maybe be able to do if I was back in shape.

Hi GCN, its great that you give us a view of racing without the rules of the UCI! I ride recumbents for more than 20 years and i can tell you there is much which Hank can do to improve his Bent-riding. The muscles need to get used to it, which last between 1000 to 2000km. Then the handling and cornering on the bike should be trained. Sadly a QuattroVelo ist not a fast Velomobile, it is for commuting or big luggage… Next time ride an Milan SL like Manon does… Nevertheless great Vid, please show more! @@The1trueDave Actually fairly common problem - at one point we had well over a foot difference in height between out tallest and shortest riders - no mention of the end Patrick was/is on :). The way we historically did it was through interchangeable seats or seat positions that meant the seat could be taken out and adjusted or swapped at each pit stop. This was pretty tedious and the seats weren't stiff enough / quite the right geometry and due to the large shifts in weight and position, weight distribution and visibility weren't always optimal. Trisled came out with an "indexed crank system" - i.e. a special boom with a set of levers operated from an extra brake lever that allowed the bottom bracket to move back and forwards as required at any point, even in the middle of a stint. This is very effective and with a couple of foam cushions for the shorter riders got the trike at least rideable for most people. Other manufacturers and schools have their own systems with the same aim.

2024 and I will be 20 years on a recumbent tadpole trike. I knew it would be fun and thought it would catch on. I also knew that when I saw a fully faired velo on the streets of Sydney that bicycles might have finally arrived as personal transport. Alas that was ten years back. Still only just getting the protected lanes together and COVID has changed drivers attitudes to bicycles. It will be interesting to see how supply chain disruptions and the escalating cost of living affects peoples attitudes to human powered transport. Australia makes some of the best recumbents and barely a peep in the mainstream media. Yet there is an active HPV racing circut through the Eastern States. Its only a small leap from a recumbent velo to an Aptera. And Tesla gets all the media miles, sorry kilometers.

It will definitely be something you want to show your audience. If you want more information I'd be happy to tell you everything about it and put you through to the right people.

Truly an amazing video. I ride recumbents and a velomobile myself. And this shows it is fun and fast to ride. I'm happy to see more of this world on the channel and on youtube. Also love to Hank trying it in a real race.

Wow, you get to ride the Velokraft Nocom (No Compromise)! Theres not much of those in the world as the Kamil, the maker, stopped producing them. Thats a very fast low racer, if not one of the fastest

I'd love to see Hank (or any of the presenters!) take advantage of the other area where recumbents are unbeatable: long-distance comfort and efficiency. How about an epic cross-country ride? You could do it with one of the others on an upright, see who quits first :D

Absolutely love the recumbent racing. They are done fairly properly here in Aus. I loved them from the first time I saw them when the sons school got involved in the "local" race. I built 1 for the son the practice on and for me to play on and they are awesome fun. Over a number of years I went and watched 2 of the local races and got a number of the high speed spills on video. There's high school aged kids riding these things around in 24hr races averaging close to 60kmh. Not peaking at 60kmh but actually holding an average speed of 60kmh for 24hrs with lots of rider changes, rollovers, crashes and plenty of speccos. Great seeing the Aussie Trisled trike in the UK representing. At first glance I wasn't certain if it was a Trisled or a Trump trike.

GCN, should follow the Pedal Prix.....I think it would be a great thing for cyclists abroad to get into watching. It, might be a seasonal event. But, it also shows that it's for all ages....and that not just the common road, or mountain bicycle is the only form of enjoyment. It's also, a cyclists form of extreme racing. "Don't knock it, until you actually try it". As, I have been told by many individuals. I, might not race them....but, I have been a recumbent touring cyclist. And, when you hit the downhill...you feel as if you're going at the speeds that they are within this video. I'm waiting on a Quattrovelo, to return to doing long distance touring after being hit twice by automobiles. Due, to their inability to pay attention to their surroundings.

Consider the Murray Bridge 24-hour HPV race. 180 faired trikes on a 2km racetrack racing for 24 hours, with riders aged from 12 to 65! Teams of 6-12 riders, racing for an hour or so then pit to swap riders. Just about every trike rolls or gets rolled, a fair bit of push-and-shove going on, especially as the faster riders make their way past the slower riders! The HPV series in South Australia and Victoria is very strong, with six races in the SA series (including one in WA), ranging from 6-hour to the 24-hour. Great fun! Search KZfaq for Murray Bridge 24 hour HPV race!

Hey mates you cool af as usual expected!! Proud to see an Italian logo (Quattrovelo) on that bile, whatever that stands for, it's still a reminder we have a good cycling scene in our little, otherwise wretched country... not just the kitchen of europe ffs! While years in the uk back in the old days, the local vicar came in town on a recumbent! It was funny awesome to see, except at mine now people just let their dogs run loose on superlong leads and i'm not dying to meet them at face height lol Keep up the good work everyone!!

I'd love to take the Trisled Aquila 3 & add a 750w mid drive electric motor & regular e-bike battery bank. Some adjustable locking suspension would be great. Set soft for rough roads & completely stiff for flat roads. Make it a bit longer so the seat can lay flat into a bed & it could become a sleeping pod for road/camping trips. Cover the roof in laminated solar cells for extra range & to power some small cooling fans or even peltiers for AC. Heat could be an electric blanket on the seat or covering you. Make a little dash for your controls (battery display) & have a spot in the dash for a tablet, laptop, phone. You could have some small speakers for music. At night before bed, you could watch some TV or movie on laptop.
