The Bad Batch is finally here! I admit I was skeptical the larger than life characters first seen in the final season of The Clone Wars warranted their own story. But so far the series has exceeded my expectations, and I'm excited to see more! Here is my full review.

I mean Kanan himself from what I remember isn't THAT old by the time of Rebels nor is he THAT young and really, it's just nice to hear him play Kanan in a period of his life we haven't seen him in as far as being on-screen is concerned.

Crosshair is the first Deathtrooper. He's a bit taller, a bit lankier, a bit more brutal and cutthroat, and he's in all black with a green visor. He's a proto Deathtrooper. Tarkin is impressed with him and that may lead to the creation of a more specialized group similar to him.

Well, how about Disney introducing female clone character to sell more merchandise to girls, in addition to all the Disney Princess Cash cows? Too cynical? Personally, I have nothing against Omega as a character. If they handle her right, she could be another Ahsoka. As long as she isn't just a tag-along kid who starts saving the squad on a regular basis with her mysterious "abilities". That can get old real fast, especially when your adult mains are all veteran special ops soldiers.

Maybe she feels guilty about being complicit in Fives' death? When she was first introduced in Season 1, she was a volunteer on a front line medical station and was shown to care about the clones. Her actions in Bad Batch would make sense if she were atoning for her out-of-character actions in that arc.

or maybe she hasn’t changed and has the Kaminoan interests still as a priority. Omega seems to be the “ideal” clone. A combination of all the other 4 - so its possible they are “manufacturing” her as their “best seller prime product” clone. Look at what the PM said at the end “stay quiet until we know whats really going on”. Its a money business survival thing for the Kaminoans.

On Kanan: I would argue that the premiere actually doesn't contradict the Kanan comic. The Bad Batch shows what really happened, as it played out. But Kanan's comic is his memories, flashing back to traumatic events from twenty years prior. They are not going to be totally accurate. So it is entirely reasonable for Caleb to misremember the situation and the exact circumstances around it, as he focused on the betrayal after a victory and his master's death. All else was of little consequence to him.
@the-aspiring-creator4249
@the-aspiring-creator4249 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly that really is such a good way of rationalizing the retcons at play, especially when you look at stuff like Grey's comic design which is primarily white, red and black which is similar enough to the Bad Batch that one could reasonably say that in his head, the clones blended together as far as colors were concerned. Though it really is still kind of a retcon... but one I think that can be trusted. Dave Filoni more often than not has made changes like this and it often leads to stories benefiting from what he implements.

@@princebujethia I mean, one can assume that the event did happen. It just most likely happened earlier and off-screen since this is not Kanan's story whereas the comics were. I think it plays into what Dave Filoni learned while he was working on TCW. When TCW was made, Legends was still technically canon but TCW did a lot of retconning, rewriting and so on of it and part of that was because he and George Lucas had a chat about canon where he was told if I remember correctly that canon was overrated and from that I think Dave got the idea that strictly trying to adhere to what is stated to be canon in the novels and comics would ultimately be limiting the creativity and also would limit some of the stories he could tell. TCW also did this for instance with the appearance of the Tals, its portrayal of Barriss Offee and how she fell to the Dark Side when she was depicted as fighting as a loyal Jedi all the way up to her death during Order 66 and then there's his retconning of events from the Ahsoka novel in the final season of TCW. And ultimately, it's not the worst thing ever. Hell in the comic it's made very clear that this is just Kanan's memories so it's not like the story itself can never happen, it just means there's the possibility that it didn't happen exactly the way it did in the comic and that the comic was mainly his perspective and recollection of events.

This was an awesome episode and love your thoughts on the first episode of Bad Batch. It's even more interesting we got to see Depa Billaba and Caleb Dume (Kanan) in this episode and how Order 66 played out from Caleb and especially Clone Force 99's perspective. Plus, it was awesome to see the return of AZI-3 from the Fives/Order 66 arc, of course, I'm saddened to what happened to him and loving the character of Omega and what development awaits for her as the series moves forward. On top of that, seeing General Grievous New model again, but this time moving makes me imagine we might get the rumored animated Star Wars films based on Son of Dathomir, Dark Disciple and possibly the Crystal Crisis arc very soon.

I wouldn't really call saw's group a rebellion yet, more like these were groups that the republic kept an eye on since in a sense they didn't really care about the republic more their own planets and they wanted to remove these groups quickly before they have a chance to go to ground or spread like the free ryloth movement

Them retconning Kanan's backstory is honestly something that I think shouldn't have too much stock placed in it. As good as the original comic is, there's a lot of factors that play into why that's better compared to the show such as how the comic is ABOUT Kanan and how he went from Caleb Dume to the character we know in Rebels therefore, there would be a TON more emotional stakes at play since we're experiencing everything through his perspective whereas in the show? It's primarily about... well the dudes the title references and more the nature of Clones and what their purpose is once the Clone Wars ended so they are really limited to what they could show. Not only that but clearly they're wanting to do it as a wink to Rebels fans while also being done in such a way that people who are watching for the first time don't feel like they have to watch four seasons of a TV series plus read a comic to understand what's going on. As for the transition, I think when it comes to Saw it should really come as no surprise that the guy is already drumming up a fighting force considering what occurs in the Onderon arc and what Saw would later become in Rebels and Rogue One. The man I can totally see taking one look at how the Emperor is behaving, going "That ain't right." and deciding immediately it's time to start prepping because he has been through already one oppressive horrible ruler to know that once you see some freaky dude in a robe declaring they have control over the whole galaxy? What's gonna come next ain't good.

Psychology major here to explain my opinion on what can explain the 'canon' discrepancy between comics/novels: You gotta remember that the format we see those comics, books and even Cobb Vanth's memories, are just that: memories. Flashbacks. And all research into psychology and memory shows us that flashbulb memories, especially those associated with severe traumas, can be garbled up, or even outright repressed. So it's not surprising that details here and there could be misremembered by characters. It can happen to anyone.

It reminds me of World War II, where practically as soon as a new fighter was introduced it was well on the way to obsolescence. Certain fighters, like the Spitfire and the Bf-109 stayed in production throughout the war (in ever more advanced models), but many were tried out in various roles such as bomber escort, ground attack and air superiority. The Z-95 was much like the U..S. P-40. Relatively tough and sturdy but already falling behind Axis fighters at high and medium altitudes early in the war. It was used because it was already in production and it was available. The V-wings are more like the Navy and Marine Cotps Corsairs, teething troubles kept them off carriers till 1944, but they were clearly superior fighters.

@@xTehOwn That was how people read it but no, that's not what the actual announcement said. From the announcement itself: "While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align. Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development." So in other words, all that was actually said was that Star Wars content was now gonna be more connected and consistent, not that all forms of canon are now suddenly at the same level of importance.

The benefit about the change to kanons beginning is that he wasn’t caught.... yet. With crosshairs not turning and telling the empire about kanon it means they know he lives and is still most likely trying to find a way off planet. In otherwords it will fix one of the biggest problems I had with his comic. He was cought to quickly and gray was to free willed and remorseful. When it first came out I had no problem with it but if people Rex, jessie, and crosshairs could not hold back grey definitely could not. Kanon should have been shot the instant he was found. Now thou it will probably give him and the clones a few days to weeks to adjust to the change. Now the realization will set in, they will also get used to the chips and when kanon get cought by gray it will make sense why he ends up sacrificing himself. In otherwords it’s the beginning that changes for him but not its outcome. Kanon can still be cought and gray can still go down as a hero to save him. It’s all just a matter of time

The difference is built right into the franchise. It is simply a detail that Kanan glossed over when telling the tale to the Ghost crew in the comic. It is all about point of view like Obi-Wan once explained. I think it is amazing that it was still the same setting and even aesthetically hooked up well. From Kanan's point of view he knew the Bad Batch were a complicated situation and just didn't think it was relevant to talk about and that is why we didn't see the Bad Batch in the comic and the details just met the void.

One thing I liked about the episode that is never clearly stated in Clone Wars or Rebels is that Order 66 is not a standard general order such that the existence of which would be known by anyone with the exceptions of Palpatine and possibly Dooku. That is to say that even without the inhibitor chips, all general orders, even order 99 as well as 66 should have been known to the clones and even the Jedi. This is something I’ve always struggled with ever since seeing Revenge Of The Sith for the first time. Even the arc with Tup, Fives and Rex did not clarify whether the purpose of the chip was merely to augment the clones obedience to the order, or if the order itself was embedded into the chip. But when Clone Force 99 directly questioned what order 66 was, that was the final hint for me. If there was a set code of general orders, the Bad Batch would surely have known about it.

There is clearly a bias depending on what medium a story is being told in, and it's disappointing. Surprising? No. Just disappointing. Filoni does it again. (also I read the Kanan comic but really didn't remember much by now, it really surprised me they would show those events here)

Nala Se said Omega was her medical assistant, right? If so, I think that, the matching headbands and even Omega's outfit sharing a similar color pallette as Nala Se's likely indicate they were close. Maybe Nala Se effectively raised her. The fact Omega was studying medicine must mean she was raised differently than the rank and file clones, probably under the direct supervision of the Kaminoans and droids like AZ.

The Kanan thing. I let slide mainly because. It's a matter of perspective. In the Kanan comics he sees his master die by Grey and he goes on to be chased down. In the Bad Batch it's Hunter's perspective.

I kind of fear there might be too many similarities with the Mandalorian (hardened warriors on the runs with a force sensitive child). But there is the potential to be different enough. Omega being older already makes her much more interresting as a character than Grogu ever was since she can talk, react and be independant.
