After discussing PCP internals in the last episode, I thought it might be good to talk about the influence that each of these parts can have on the efficiency, power and performance of a rifle. In this video we discuss the "balance of power".

Got to add my thanks to you for doing this series, Matt. It's a superb set of tutorials that provide a fundamental understanding of air guns, and PCPs in particular. I've watched each episode several times, and will 'binge' through the entire set again once you've finished them. Aside from an old Gamo springer, I don't own any modern airguns - and this series is exactly the sort of education I need to guide any future purchases. Again, many thanks for the very professional job.

Basically its impulse control on the hammer. You tightly control the impulse on the hammer so that its delivered over a very short period which is shorter than the travel time of the hammer so that it bounces back on striking the valve head and doesnt have another forward cycle or if it does, not enough ro release more air. Thats good information. Im currently working on a few designs and really appreciated this information.

I've been watching these videos for YEARS and I've learned that there IS a method for running related PCP's. But it seems as though it's a giant freeing secret because no one gives a good video on tuning the: regulator, hammer spring, valve spring, hammer weight, hammer bounce.... Robert Lane has the best I've seen so far.

To get the best performance on a regulated gun, you should 'sweetspot' the reg, if it's adjustable of course. Start with a low spring pressure and increase the reg pressure to the maximum velocity (chrono reading). Increase spring pressure and do it again. Do so until you get the desired velocity.

Epic video Matt. I've just acquired a regulated BSA r-10 mk 2 running at 11.1 ftlbs. Being a regulated gun, does this mean that hammer bounce will not be an issue with it? (BSA claim it gets about 240 shots from a 235 bar fill but I've never verified this personally) Is there a way to increase efficiency with regulated guns? Many thanks, Lance.

@icuppu2
@icuppu2 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but by making it lighter, it will hit the valve lighter and let out less air; thereby, more shots, but less power per shot. so the question should be posed: what hammer weight will give me the most shots per fill, while obtaining the best accuracy and power combination? If you were to decrease the hammer weight to the point only enough air comes out for the pellet to fall out the muzzle, you'd probably get about 1,000 shots per fill.

Hi, Thanks for your helpful content! A little advice if you can. I have a Brocock Compatto 5.5 mm, and it shoots at only 11.5 J. I am in the UK and is supposed to shoot at under 16J nozzle energy. I purchased a regulator in order to get more uniformity over nozzle velocity at working pressure 200 to 100 Bar. I set the regulator at 120Bar ant try to adjust it to get 15.8 J nozzle energy but the maximum I can get is 14.7 J and a lot of waste of air because the number of shots I can do on one cylinder is less. I mesure the tranfer port and is 2.2 mm ID (I thik here the air is geting slowed). I am planig to drill the tranfer port to 2.5 mm. Now, the question is: have you taken apart your rifle? can you tell me what is the ID of the transfer port? Many Thanks.

🔫🔫🔫 I immediately noticed the importance of the valve spring adjustment when I tried to bring my dreamline down to 90 bar, the valve spring is not strong enough to hold the air and it just leaks down over a couple hours. Turn it back up to 110 bar on reg pressure, and then it has enough pressure to keep the hammer valve closed tightly. If the dreamline had a hammer valve adjustment, you could easily adjust the spring to keep the valve closed at much lower regulated pressures. Like the impact you could lower your reg pressure WAY down and just tighten up your valve spring and boom. No leak down. I’ve been thinking of a way to get a “DREAMLINE mod” to have a spring adjustment, but you would probably have to drain the air every time you adjust it because all of that is in the air res sealed up behind the reg.

I need to be explained some thing to me in your next videos. I am having hard time of understanding how does weigh of the pellet effects on the air being spend on the shot. For instanse if I have pellet in 177 cal, weights 0.67 grammes and shoot it in 300 meters.persec I have 40 stable shots. After that I do not screw anything in my gun, I just change pellet for 1.05 grammes JSB Beast and shoot it and have only 20 shots in the same air preassure range. Why is that happens? Its wastes more air now but I just changed only pellet. How is that possible? Please would you mind to help me to find out.
@icuppu2
@icuppu2 6 жыл бұрын
Cool question! Let me analyze: 0.67g x 15.432358 = 10.34 gr, and 300m / 0.03048 =984.25 fps, so 10.34 x 984.25 x 984.25 / 671 / 671 = 22.25 fpe, and 22.25 x 40 = 890 fpe total from your fill. Now, keep in mind that a heavier pellet will travel slower in the barrel, but will accelerate longer in time, so the kinetic energy will be a slight higher by 1% to 5% if all variables are fairly equal; in other words, do not compare apples to oranges as 4.2 grain alloy to a 5.14 gr BB to a 21 gr lead (Pb) pellet. A straight across-cross multiplication equation to convert m1 v1 to m2 v2, since you did not give the velocity of the "1.05g" which is 16.2gr, so the unknown is v2. m1 = 10.34gr m2 = 16.2gr v1 = 984.25 fps v2 = ???.?? fps Isolate the unknown v2 = sqrt of: {(m1 x v2 x v2) / m2} = v2 = 786.336 fps, and 16.2gr x 786.336 x 786.336 / 671 / 671 = 22.25 fpe, so 22.25 x 20 shots = 445 fpe total. Now for the ugly truth: 445 / 890 = 50% efficient for the 1.05g pellet in your gun, while the 0.67g is 100% efficient with the 0.67g in your gun. Now, the answer to your question as to why you only get a 50% output from the heavier pellet, is in the name of the plumber; in other words, without enough information, I am pissing into the wind and wondering why my feet are wet. What kind of gun, caliber, barrel length, type of pellet, pump/CO2/HPA/break barrel, smooth, rifling dimensions, gas pressure, etc., etc... The more information, the closer the result to the truth. If anyone has a quick and dirty answer to your question then that is exactly what they are. From the Ke and fps I guess you have a HPA gun. What would be nice is if you can include if it is regulated or not and what is the fill pressure you are using; also, if you know the plenum size, reservoir volume, and what appears to cause your 50% loss in total power is, what is the transfer port orifice diameter? It is probably 50% of your caliber in order to get the most shots per fill as opposed to it being the same as the caliber in order to get the most power per shot, but least number of shots per fill. Use the following formula and tweak the variables to get your target power and efficiency numbers. psi x π/4 x cal. x TP x n x Bbl" /12 = theoretical fpe π = 3.141592654... n = efficiency (power out / power in) TP = Transfer Port diameter Bbl" = barrel length in inches 12 = number of inches in a foot psi = 14.504 psi/Bar Enjoy your shooting experience because it is also a journey. The laws of physics are not just really good ideas. Numbers do not lie, but you can lie with numbers.
@metamorphicorder
@metamorphicorder 5 жыл бұрын
The short answer is there is likely some factor in your gun that adjusts for an heavier pellet its obviouslt either not a strictly moderated gun meaning like regulated guns it releases only the ammount of air that it is designed to within reason or its designed to sort of adapt to whats happening and use more air for a heavier pellet. The air in the resivoir pushes the valve close, but the air comming out has to expand in order for it to do so. A heavier pellet takes longer for a given air volume to accelerate and this could make the valve slower to close. This would allow more air out. Reducing the number of shots. Like how a two stroke motor benefits from back pressure from a exhaust pipe in ways and to extents that a 4 stroke doesnt. Thats my idea at least. The gun is obviously not releasing the same ammount of air with heavier pellets. Because if it was you would see a similar shot count. A halving of shot count is significant and seems consistent which leads me to believe that something in the rifle is changing either by design or by poor design with a heavier pellet. Ask the maker they will likely be able to tell you exactly whats happening.

Open up the transfer port diameter to the caliber diameter and polish any roughness in the gas route, but if you want a quick velocity increase without any modifications, use a lighter projectile. You did not include the mass of the projectile giving you 750 fps.

🔫🔫🔫 I wonder if other dreamline owners have figured out that you must have at least over 100 bar regulated pressure to keep it from leaking down. I know for a fact I spent days experimenting with this and I believe the only option would be to have different valve spring strengths for extreme regulated pressure differences.

I have designed my own hidrotic multiplying trigger . when Depressing , The poppet, this is done by Two apposing, piston floating in oil. as the smaller piston is Dearest as the trigged applies that incest force to the oil, is compress & multiplies the force on the poppet valve is litter on the trigger The travel allows the poppet to opens the force holding it shut , clap's sending the pellet down rang, & the trigger is reset as the poppet shuts . under the regulated presser. resets the hidrotic's to it start position. . at this stage a tow stage trigger can be fitted but i find it exsepterbal with one. the final release. allows a claps of air in the poppet . camber there is no hammer. this alienating noise. making the rifal not silent but parity dam qiut. removing hammer bounce all Together. The principal is baste on the effect created by two different sized pitons when under force is applied by the smaller & leverage multiplying that force by it's area when the oil pressing upon the slightly larger piston. this multiple's the trigger presser & distance. of travel couplet's the opining of the poppet. Valve releasing the air as it collapse the trigger is relist & the vale is reset . . If the trigger is not riles the larger piton. applies it's own pusher to shut the poppet valve. Resulting in no hammer, The comparison can be made by the hydralike breaking to a slave Cylinder to that of a master cylinder of a car braking system, the applied pressers making the depressing of the poppet litters & the distains travailed. just like the brake is applied by the slave Cylinder. to close the break. I find the rifal not only quite but less air is lost. . to apply a safety a simple slid is applied to the trigger to prevent it being pulled. it's not patented by me as the first i know to archive this siystom. it a applied hidrotics & free for adaption to any one, [wising to apply this precibal to their air rifal, ] it a good modification . I used this principal to covert my Springer to a. Breech lodging PCP . air rifal. By Les Thompson England , [ Regulated Rifles] I can't do filming so I have posted my results. here [bloody good mod ]
