Let's take a closer look at an example of how musicians and dancers count the music for ballet exercises. I show you an example that I made in my master's research where I composed the music for the battements tendus in the centre and where I created a score in which I combined the dancers' counts, the musicians' counts and how the steps are combined with the rhythm.

@@marianapalaciospianistI'm currently on lockdown (it started this week), so I'm not playing at this precise moment, but prior to it, I started playing for the Professional Company of Ballet at the Municipal Theatre of Santiago (this march 2021). Some time ago I worked for several years on a similar position for the Ballet School at the same Theatre, and did some collaboration with the Company. This time I will only be working with the Company.. I've liked your channel so much, congrats! I got in touch with your work searching for learning material for pianists while working at the Ballet School. I remember finding your Gothenburg Master Degree Project very enlightening and useful,. I'm so looking forward for your online course to be ready. Can't wait! Hope to see you soon. All the best

Key subject and nicely done! , what do you think about this quote? "In trying to ascertain the meter, it is often helpful to pay attention to the "and" upbeat voiced by the teacher. In the timing of that single word may be a hint as to whether a two or a three is desired. However, some ballet teachers out of habit disregard the implications of the way they voice an upbeat. If that is the case, the musician is better off making his or her own decision concerning the meter, based on the visual demonstration of the exercise. Not infrequently, the sound made by the ballet slippers doing the steps across the loor will provide a good hint regarding meter. If there has been no demonstration physically, the accompanist may just be out of luck, and if he or she guesses wrong, the teacher may have to stop the class and begin the exercise again with a change of meter. This may be disconcerting but is really not something to worry about too much for it happens all the time, even in the best of ballet companies. Meter is always a primary consideration, along with the establishment of exact tempo". (Teck, 1990, p. 108)

@marianapalaciospianist 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Brava Katherine Teck and thanks Juan for sharing this 🙏🏼✔️ I’d say that in general is very clear what kind of pulse subdivision the ballet teacher is marking (duple or triple). Then, it’s the musician’s responsibility to decide which time signature to play. I have to say that sometimes I don’t know if I’m playing a 3/4, 3/8 or 6/8, or a 6/8 or 12/8. I mean, does it really matter to know exactly your time signature? It’s more about the feeling of the subdivision and what you do with your music to fill the musicality of the movements, right? 🪄🎶

The score thing is brilliant!!! Would love to see more. Also how do you deal with the teacher not counting when showing the exercise, but showing only quickly with their hands? How do you know, then, if the closing of the leg should be on the count or on the "and" ?
@marianapalaciospianist
@marianapalaciospianist 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 😃 That’s tricky to answer 😬 Is this teacher giving a class for professionals? I guess what you can do is to play a standard tendus or something that you know works well in general, and then dancers will fit the accents in your music 🤷🏻‍♀️ Actually, we don’t have to fit all the time our music with their steps. I think that’s important with students, but with professionals you can be more free. Does this answer your question?

@@marianapalaciospianist they're students but with good level (3-4 hours/day), although they're not on the beat. But I don't know enough to understand "where" each move should fall :)

@@MisterDelay then ask the teacher to show you the tempo and energy when he/she starts to mark the exercise. You don't need the whole exercise, but just the beginning. And explain him/her that if you see the tempo and energy everything will go better, not only for you but also for the students. But depends on the situation and other factors...

Nice video. Thank you. I’m still wandering why the dancers are counting the tempo twice slower than the music for a 2/4 or 4/4. If you have any clue? Best regards
@marianapalaciospianist
@marianapalaciospianist 3 жыл бұрын
Because they feel the natural pulse and not the beat of the time signature. It’s the same as if you ask audience to clap, they will clap in the natural pulse. In a 3/4 they will clap in only the first beat, and in a 4/4 they’ll clap twice. Is it clear now?
