Akane Takada (Nikiya), Natalia Osipova (Princess Gamzatti) and Vadim Muntagirov (Solor) rehearse Natalia Makarova's La Bayadère, filmed as part of #WorldBalletDay 2018. Principal Guest Teacher Olga Evreinoff. Accompanied by pianist Grant Green. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/productions/la...
Nikiya, a temple dancer, is in love with the warrior Solor. The High Brahmin also desires Nikiya, and when she rejects him, he plans to take revenge on Solor.
When the High Brahmin tells the Rajah about Solor’s secret love, the Rajah decides that Nikiya, not Solor, should be killed. Princess Gamzatti is to be married to Solor. She overhears and tries to bribe Nikiya to give up Solor, but Nikiya refuses. The Rajah and Gamzatti arrange for Nikiya to be killed by a snake bite during the engagement festivities. Despondent, Solor is filled with remorse and haunted by visions of Nikiya. He cannot complete the wedding ceremony. The gods are angered and destroy the temple with all inside it. In the afterlife, Solor and Nikiya are finally united.
An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877, and was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadère as a child in Leningrad and created this production in 1980. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.

correct name is olga evreinoff, not everinoff - from russian "evrey" meaning "jew". the language situation in this episode is quite comic. all three of the participants in rehearsal are native russians; all ballet terminology is naturally in french, and the rehearsal takes place in england, so olga evreinoff speaks english w/ballet pianist and w/ballet dancers, but they often switch to russian. also, you can hear olga evreinoff calling vadim muntagirov "vadik" - it is a diminutive for "vadim", muntagirov's first name.

So grateful to the RB for making so many wonderful videos of class and rehearsal/coaching available for us to see. It occurs to me that I hope they film (videotape, whatever) as many as possible, if not all such sessions, throughout the company and repertoire; what a fantastic resource for future dancers, directors, etc. Sadly, we are all mortal, and these treasured professionals, guiding younger generations with all the wisdom, strategy and artistry they've amassed, will not be living and active forever, so capturing all we can of their work seems essential.

What a treasure Olga Evreinoff is, as is the pianist and of course, the dancers, Osipova, Montagirov and Takada. All are top of the world class professionals and it is such a joy and privilege to be in the room with them, virtually, witnessing this extraordinary coaching session. This is exactly what produces the sterling quality of a Royal Ballet performance, consistently and predictably. Glorious, always! I have watched this video many times, still finding every moment to be worthy of full attention. Evreinoff is really magnificent. Wondering if there are videos of her dancing. I think it was with Leningrad Kirov.
