FFS wrong person singing; this is a man's song if the words mean anything, she sing about her beard. The beauty of this song is in the meaning of the words, sung by a female the word make no sense, all is left is the twang.

I appreciate The Band Perry so much for this cover! They did it their way but stayed true to John Hartford's wonderful, wonderful composition and Glen Campbell's timeless interpretation of it. John Hartford (wrote this song) once said that as nice as it was to have professional peers applaud his music and ask permission to record it themselves, the greatest compliment came in the form of someone in the public (I seem to recall his example was of sitting in a restaurant and a busboy walked past his table) humming one of his songs; out of key or missing some of words. I heard him say that probably more than 45 years ago and I always smile when I hear someone humming a song, out of key, maybe missing some of the words. Those moments remind me of John, one of my generation’s great song writers.

I wonder why this song is especially a song "of the lonely"? I'm married to a guy who "lays gentle" on my mind, in my heart but I'm so lonely...I yearn for something I can't find...don't refer to anybody over 50 as an "old foggie" anybody...the phrase makes me cringe, the heart is young besides...I immediately wanted to be "the pretty, pretty young girl" - a wistful, pensive, Marianne F. - she's never covered this song but could have. I knew when I first heard it, on the radio, in Canada, by Glen Campbell, there was more- I'd never heard of John Hartford - when my mom had The G.C. Show on- and he introduced John! I thought, yes, there was " a note missing" - look at a live version and see the expression in both men's eyes- you KNOW who wrote the lyrics- I enjoyed this cover too- great songs, have no "best before" stamp, wish Sinatra- just found out yesterday, he covered it- I shudder. Sorry fans of Frank, just too slick for me- not even going to scroll for it. Now Harry Belafonte- that's another story....Namaste from Waits' All Nite Diner, Located at the corners of Somewhere Else and No Place To Go...

If this is the “new country” - I love it. This recording uses the classic elements of country: steel guitar, banjo, rhythm guitar, fiddle, but does so in a creative arrangement. It starts rather simply, then builds adding layer upon layer of complexity - all classic country elements. Shelly has a nice “country” voice, but without an over-the-top country “twang.” I can see why this song was acclaimed. It is a sophisticated “country” piece.

I have listened to this song hundreds of times....and it is truly a masterpiece of work. ...The subtle layering of adding musical instruments and vocal piece by piece as the song progresses. As each verse progresses there is a very gentle addition of instruments and vocals between the spaces of sounds that is nothing less than a master piece. Like a layer cake, each new layer getting thicker and richer as the song progresses. Very Climatic and beautiful to the mind and spirit.. Plus the visuals are nothing short of breath taking and quite meaningful in the analogy of the song. This is an incredible genius piece of musical composition .. WELL DONE!!

It is so well written and so well compositioned that you have to be thrilled that it is now updated for the new generation. When it was originally performed by glenn campbell it was a home run knocked out of the park. Some people feel like you shouldn't tamper with such a classic, but the truth is most songs we hear on the radio, even those in the last fifty or forty years were remakes. I really appreciate the fact that such a great song has a second life for another generation... And who knows how many people will be directed to hear the original song by the one and only glen campbell.

I was able to see John play on Christmas Eve at the original Grand Ole Opry , as well he was a very good friend of my sister. She spoke at his memorial. He gave so much unseen to the public, he played background in many albums, helped others compose and produce, gave in so many ways without asking or expecting anything in return.

Very good version of this song.. I saw Glenn's farewell tour in Boston Feb, 2012... It was a very good show.. Watch the movie, Documentary the Wrecking crew.. It's on you tube... That studio band is on just a bought every record to come out of California from the late 50's to 1974... Glenn was part of that band, and they played on his early records... My best song on you tube is, predivorce paranoia..... 21 I wrote...

Back in my band days (the 70's) with Kudzu, a southeastern blues rock band, John Hartford headlined a fund raiser for an American Indian cause and we opened for him. It was at the Omni in Atlanta which seated 15 or 20K don't know the exact number, but much to big of an arena for the event. There were maybe 5 or 6 hundred there since he was just coming in to his own and later on might well have filled it. His song, Gentle on my Mind, was just starting to be known then. But none the less we went out and rocked with the sound bouncing everywhere in that cavernous largely empty room. Did OK but not the best sound since our PA was made to play to maybe 5K people at best. But after we finished, out walks John with his acoustic, his banjo and his fiddle. I was amused and wondered how was he going to play to that huge mostly empty room with no band and just his acoustic instruments. He calmly sat down, pulled up a mike to sing in and one for his instrument. The crowd got quiet and he began to play. I will never forget how he just simply put a spell on that crowd that day. He was so good and so entertaining. He ended with a fiddle piece that was gentle, but lots of arpeggios and just flawlessly executed. People stood up in their chairs and cheered on and on. I was stunned. So were they. After a couple of encores it finally ended, but I went away humbled that day. This gentle giant conquered an impossible room. I loved him from then on. He eventually started doing the tap dance thing for his rhythm later in his career and again I just could not believe what this gentle man could do. RIP John!! I love you Bro.

I wish the concert you described was recorded. Clearly it left a strong, positive and memorable impression. Thank you for sharing. I only have vague general memories of hearing this song when I was young. At that time, I just enjoyed the tone, rhythm, sound of the instruments, and of course the voice. As I take a fresh listen now, decades later, I want to follow up by reading the lyrics more closely to better understand and appreciate that as well. Finally, I commend The Band Perry for an outstanding rendition.
