Once you have listened to a live performance of The Band - it is way more intense than individual album cuts. With the addition of charts by Alain Toussaint and the finest session musicians, Rock of Ages convinced me to join my college roommates and get tickets to the Before the Flood tour at the Inglewood Forum. I sat in the nosebleed section, lol. However when the Band was to appear for 3 nights at the Greek Theater, I managed to get seats for the 3rd row near center on the third night, as well as tickets on the front row to the right side of the stage for the 1st show. We were blow away by the Horns as the mix was overwhelming and had to put something in my ears. On the 3rd night, the sound engineer got it right and it was one fantastic experience. Garth on accordian, Richard touched all of us during The Romor and Unfaithful servant. My favorites LIfe is a Carnival, and The Shape I'm In - Richard sang, from L.A., 'had to rumble in the jungle' and a roar responded that was louder than the 102 decibels from the stage. This is a wonderful way to reminisce about my college years and the friends who introduced me to The Band, Traffic, and the Allman Brothers. Ty.

R.E.M. did a smart thing when they started out: all members of the band were listed as a composer. Mills was initiallety against this, but Buck said what broke bands up was disagreement about rights. (Each member also had a veto ríght - if he didn't want to do something, they didn't do it.) They lasted 18 years, twice as long as The Band.

The band being known as “the band” lasted 11 years (1967-1978) but you could argue that they lasted 20 if you include the time they were known as “the hawks” as well

I love The Band. Great musicians & 3 of best singers ever. Over the years Robbie became the villain in this story. He did seem to be a “me, me,me” type of guy, but we weren’t there & don’t kno the whole story. Levon & Rick were such likable guys & Richard always seemed fragile & sympathetic. I wish they could hav worked out the problems because they were great. Why only Robbie’s name was listed as sole songwriter is the root of the issue I guess? We hav the songs forever Farewell Robbie

We don't know how the contract for recording were written.The Songwriting credits were written as what? For instance, by contract Beatles songs, -' Yesterday' a McCartney song, is credited Lennon, and McCartney. "Don't Let Me Down" very Lennon. Credited to Lennon and McCartney. Led Zeppelin when writing their own material were better at Page, or Page and Plant. Or JPJ, Page , Plant No Quarter Page ,Plant Jones, Bonham Rock,nRoll - - - some thoughts.

Robbie loved him some Robbie. That he chose to slow down or quit partying is admirable but he did it in a way that was just like the worst ex smoker becomes. And his documentary was the typical bio on the band. Yawn. Nothing that hasn’t been done to death a million times on other retrospectives on the band. Except the paycheck he got for it and to act self righteous about how lost everyone minus Garth were and he was just so damn indignant by talking about instances when it should never of been talked about while the others are long gone. Levon gave Robbie the stories of the south and then proceeded to act as though Levon contributed tide bits to the song. At least John Fogerty came up with the Bayou gimmick for CCR on his own and didn’t piggyback on another and in his case he should of been upset and pissed at the others in CCR. With Robbie he would bend Levon’s ear til he had what he needed then bowed out and said I’ve had enough. Then he refuses to reform with the band in 1983 because he was “ retired” according to him. Except he was Scorsese’s man I’m scoring music for his films a lot of the time and then makes a solo album and then goes on the lecture tour circuit and releases more music and retained most of the publishing from being the “ sole” songwriter . 🥴 And you wonder why Levon despised him for most of the last 45 years of his life. You want to be in pain listen to him tell stories. He was horrible at the lecture circuit. He had a way of speaking for 60 minutes and really not saying much but speaking for most of the hour. Universities that hosted him some have said he promised to stick to a certain guideline that people would be interested in only to go off in areas that were boring to musicians and fans alike and it was rarely well received even though he got a nice applause regardless only for fans to say what I just said here. He felt burned out at the time and walked away which is his right but by 1983 it had been 7 years by the time the Band reformed without him and with the exception of Garth he hadn’t even talked to the others since 1976 when the Last Waltz was shot and briefly in 1978 at the premiere for the movie. Brothers my azz. If he was so damned concerned for the others overall well being being at risk by 1976 he didn’t as far as anyone knows including his documentary try to reach out to his “ at risk brothers” and don’t even know if he attended Richard or Ricky’s funeral. 🦨

Please give me the footnote on the cold and the snow as a reason for leaving Big Pink and then give the the other footnote on why they came back home to Woodstock for decades and the rest of their lives in the cold and snow. 'They Once Were Brothers' written by Robbie Robertson who was the stepbrother of the Band suffered from narcissism and had to feed his disease in Holyweird! So, RR killed The Band! AND THE BAND PLAYED ON without him for decades... even in chilly weather. ,
@hannejeppesen1809
@hannejeppesen1809 3 ай бұрын
As far as I can tell they also felt a change of scenery would do them good. Drugs were out of control, Bob Dylan had moved to LA. 4 Band members came back to Woodstock, Robbie stayed in LA. So Robbie wanted a different lifestyle nothing wrong with that, they did not take an oat being together for the rest of their lives. They were together for 16 years, more than most bands. Robbie did not kill the Band drugs did. Yes, thet played on and some of their concerts were good, but nobody were writing songs, at least not as prolific as Robbie Watch The Last Waltz and hear what Robbie is saying about being on the road and how it has killed many greats, Janice, Elvis, Hendrix, others. He was by his own admission more scared than the others. Read his book, and also Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band, he had become a caretaker of 3 heroin addicts, Levon, Richard and Rick, he had a young family and it was time for him to move on. When they wanted to tour without him, they had to get his permission which he gave, he didn't have to. He did some solo work and had Garth and Rick backed him up. Did he have an ego, he did, I would venture to say most rock stars probably do. He wrote some incredilbe songs, played killer guitar, was very good looking (I'm female he was gorgeous when young) charming and intelligent hard not to have an ego, but he is not the bad person many make him out to be. He does, however have many devoted fans. I love all of the Band members, I'm of that generation so I get the drug use, other than Robbie, Rick is my favorite, his singing can tear you heart out. He too was good looking with loadsof charisma.@@McMurphyKirby

@@hannejeppesen1809 Actually you just don't know. It wasn't the weather or drugs it was the ego of Robbie Robinson. His ego was the most illicit drug in the Band, the stepbrother, who was seeking all the glory. The Band played on for two more decades without RR and released a couple albums with a thousand concerts so that is proof that drugs ended nothing ... Robinson left the Band to pursue his ego in Hollywood. Thats how it ended for Robbie, but THE BAND PLAYED ON...my point is that your point is a LIE!
@hannejeppesen1809
@hannejeppesen1809 3 ай бұрын
Sorry, I and many Robbie Robertson fans will disagree. Dealing with 3 heroin additcs is pretty heavy. Obviously you are not about to change your mind, nor am I going to change mind. Whatever happended keep in mind Robbie never said anything really bad or meanspiritied about his former band member, not in his book or in many interviews. Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band is critical of Robbie, but fair. Rick Danko himself said in an interview he wanted to do something on his own. You call me a lier, I would venture to say you in your dislike for Robbie refuses to acknowledge the truth. It is available here on Utube and in books.@@McMurphyKirby

Who was running the forward progress and normal operations when others were struggling through their addictions? If only they all decided to be 5 equal partners before the addictions threatened to bring it all crashing down much sooner. Remember one was a father with a family to support and raise right? Whereas others were free to amuse themselves with more recreational self indulgent activities such as untethered drug use. Somebody had to keep the ship on course. Right? Have any of the haters had to try to talk rational business sense to addicts knee deep in the depths of their addictions?
