This 1977 Trans Am is the last Bandit car ever owned by Burt Reynolds. Made popular by Smokey and the Bandit, the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is an iconic movie car that is sought after today. After the movie, General Motors sold thousands of these black and gold special edition Trans Ams. See the story behind this gorgeous example.

Actually Burt's last Trans Am was a 1979 and he signed the dash. It sold in Florida for $317,500. Also, as Hal Needham said, only 3 Trans Ams were used in the movie, 1 for advertising or up close scenes and 2 for stunts.

OK a lot of things to cover here, 1. The engine call out on the Shaker hood scoop is wrong for 3 reasons on that car. 1st the cars in the movie have the call out 6.6 Litre which was used for the base 400 pontiac engine which had 180 hp and 325 ft lb of torque, 2. The TA 6.6 call out is for the W72 400 which cameout in 1977 with 220hp and 320 ft lbs ,it also had factory chrome valve covers. 3. The engine shown in this video is not a Pontiac engine it is a 403 Olds engine the oil fill tube in front of the shaker is a dead give away. It had 185hp and 320 ft lbs . The W72 was carried on to 1979 and was factory rated at that time 220 hp and 320 ft lbs the cars in fact put out 260-280 net hp and could 1/4 mile in high 15 to low 14 sec range. The 1979 w72 came with a 4 spd manual trans only.

Except you are wrong as well lol! The1977 W72 TA 6.6 came with 200hp and was only upgraded in 1978 to 220hp. I had both the 1977 L78 6.6 litre and the W72 TA 6.6 :)
@tomcherry7029

@blackbird1448 the factory rating for the 1977 was 200hp , because it was available with both the Manual and automatic transmissions the automatic draws more hosre power to run that the 4 speed manual., W72 is a performance package for the L78 400 they are both L78 engines . The 220hp factory rating was an under-rated number .

@@blackbird1448- go easy on our informed friend, lol...! When you look at the way he’s set out all that he’s written, it seems to me he’s simply made a mistake & written 220 instead of 200. He seems to be aware that 220 is an uplift... with best wishes, Jeff, PS - I’m old & in U.K. & brought up on Lambretta scooters, Triumph motorcycles in the ‘60’s and Austin Minis & Ford Capri V6 3 litres in the ‘70’s. However, before I ‘settled down’(!), in ‘84 bought a built-for-U.K. ‘79 Trans Am and ran it as my daily driver for 7 years... Tho’ it was 403, 7” rims, no bird/tops, etc., I loved driving this car. The best thing about this car was that it stood in a dockside warehouse for 2 years and was first registered in U.K. Nov ‘80. On its first Inspection in Nov ‘83 it had only done 3000 miles and only had 9000 miles on it when I bought it from the still first owner. He’d really looked after it; ‘looked brand new inside & out! Again, best wishes, Jeff

For one , you are incorrect , the car in the movie are all 403 Oldsmobile 6.6 litres , the bonnet scoop is correct 6.6 TA as that is a 403 Olds , there were very few 400 pontiacs left in 1977 all left over 1976 or1975 s, all auto Trans Ams are T350 autos , only the 400 Pontiac was manual , 150 pounds heavier and only 15 HP more than the much better higher revving Olds 403 , that's what the 403 cars were used . Plus the 403 had 24 more ft pounds of torque!

So what he's saying is is that there are no actual promotion or in film used trans ams? They were all pretty much totally destroyed? So when we see Burt Reynolds signing one of these it's just somebody who duplicated a replica as best anyone could? And he gives it his stamp of approval 100 Grand I mean if it's not actually one of the cars used in the film that they could have taken care of it and not done so many crazy things, then yeah I can imagine spending a hundred grand on that car. An actual film used car. The 1978 from Smokey and the Bandit II was the Kick-Ass one for me. I mean to me that's the one. I mean the Pinnacle is the 78

It’s like that for all movie and TV show cars. Less than 50% of General Lees out there are real. I own a ‘58 Plymouth “Christine” clone. The one thing I tell people at car shows is that is NOT a movie car. I hate people who have clones and lie about them!!

So much misinformation..the movie was filmed in 76 and was released in 77 ..honeycomb grills didn't come on the s/e the base cars got those..that knock off jacket is from part 2 not part 1,that owners manual is from 1981 where Burt did a add for them.... That General Lee on the rack is the wrong year....this was not his last t/a that went up for auction

The photo of Burt sitting on the Trans Am is a sales brochure, not an owners manual. I believe that is from 1978. The same year is the Trans Am used and Smoky and the Bandit 2, not 1981. The 1981 had a different body design which was used in Smokey and the Bandit 3. The General Lee Charger that is in the back of their garage, see 1:51 n in the background is a 1970 Charger. You ARE correct on that. It is not a 1969 like the TV show/movie cars.

@Mike-0201 lmfao smokey and the bandit was filmed in 1976, no 78s were used in smokey and the bandit. Part 2 used 1980 turbo trans am. The owners manual that came with 81s had Burt in his jacket from part 2 sitting on top of a 81 turbo trans am yes an 81 which was the last yr of the 2nd gen trans am do some research. 82 was first yr for the 3rd gen which is a diff body style

the honeycomb part of the grill is supposed to be black not gold. and those are the 2nd design hurst hatches which are wrong too. theres plenty of other little wrong parts too. he definitely built the car to flip wish they restored it more accurate.

My 77 Bandit had what I think were the original hurst hatches. (smaller cutouts than what came later) They leaked so bad and were super easy to pry open. My grills were indeed black but I've seen brochures that show the grills as gold too, which I think looks terrible.

In the movie they had the early Hurst T-tops later GM came up with a superior "Fisher T top" The big difference is the metal is a foot wide in the Hurst and half that in the bigger Fisher version.

I would, the Hurst were retro kits with a kit feel and the Fisher units were better materials wider with better latches and vinyl pouches to store them in the trunk. BTW in the four or so years I had mine they never leaked although I didn't use that as criteria for my statement. @@bige2012

Yep, my 77 had the Hurst T-Tops. I remember being so disappointed when I realized the newer cars had MUCH bigger glass. I got mine in 1985 and one of my best friends had a brand new Mustang GT with the Ford factory TTop's that had a super slim piece of metal in the middle.
