Hidden off of Bangkok's Sukhumvit 23, there's a Vietnamese restaurant where it's still turn-of-the-century French Saigon. It's in a building literally disassembled piece-by-piece in Vietnam, brought to Bangkok, and rebuilt- and inside, that's exactly what happened to the family behind Le Dalat.
This is the story of Doan Ngoc Hoa, better known as Madame Susan, and the incredible, opulent, harrowing, one-of-a-kind story that brought her- and her food- from Vietnam to Thailand, by way of old Paris. And it's a story about a dinner party that started in the 19th century and still hasn't stopped- and one that we were lucky enough to join for an unforgettable evening.

As a Vietnamese Canadian who grew up in Saigon for 10 years, I truly appreciate this documentary. It shows how traditional Vietnamese women are. Truly heartwarming, truly beautiful. I love Saigon so much.

I enjoyed very much this show because I am Vietnamese American who is also moving my family to Chiang Mai next year. Many parts of the story I can relate to as I was a refugee who left Vietnam 2 days before the fall of Saigon. Grew up in the US and now working as a diplomat, I am one of the lucky one, but many never made it out or died trying in the vast ocean. Will visit the next time I’m in Bangkok. More videos like this please……..

That was great. I speak French and I was in Vietnam in 68 and 69 just N.W. of Saigon . I was always impressed by the Vietnamese...their culture, their food and the fact that even the poorest had class that we find often missing in the West.

I had the pleasure of eating there in 2002 while I was living here n soi 23. I was brought there by a Vietnamese American friend and was amazed at how different the food was vs what I had eaten in Vietnam just months before. It was a such a different level and refinement. My friend knew the owner so we briefly met and I learned a small part of her story. She was a strikingly elegant woman, vital and seamlessly switching between languages. Thank you for finding the rest of her story!

I still have the beautiful wooden Thai statue that she gave me as a souvenir before she left America to go back to Asia . I am missing her a lot . Rest in peace Chère Tata Suzanne .

I grew up in Saigon and left in 1975 of April the 1st of that year. Everything that was documented here reminds me of my country and Vinh Long was near Can Tho where my grandfather 's parents had lived. Also Emperor Bao Dai was related to my grandmother 's family side on my Dad's side. That was a long history by itself. Thank you for this wonderful documentary!

I just have been there twice but got lucky to know some other obsessive curious food explorers during my long stays (it's unbelievable what you discover from cooks and restaurateurs when you simply walk down alleys and decide to try "another one of those 3/4 tables restaurant")

Grandma did right by her daughter by not being interested in the emperor of Vietnam. Because Nam Phuong, the girl who married the emperor, had quite bad marriage and pretty sad life 😢.

I’ve read a story that at the end of her life, she had a handsome butler always close to her (who’s rumored to be her lover). She also smiled way more after leaving Bảo Đại. When the butler died, he requested to be buried next to her.

Absolutely incredible food, and I found the staff were already watching this very video; I mentioned it to them again and how serendipitous it was that I saw the video in my short time here. There is nothing like seeing old black and white photos on the wall when people were young and beautiful... those were the good old days... now photos are digital and stuck on a phone or a computer and it just isn't the same anymore... it was fun going back in time 🌹

at 34:10 I had to pause the video, and reflect and cry. i'm not sure why I am so overcome with emotion, but the concept of this magnetic, iconic woman leaving her mark on the history and cuisine of indochina --- well, it's remarkable Fantastic kudos to OTR for capturing this story. I hope to visit their restaurant in Bangkok next time I travel to this part of the world, to experience her wonderful life through her recipes and her descendants

Wonderfully curated, produced and presented by the stakeholders, non other than the family members themselves. Haven't been to Le Dalat in a very long time, partly because there are competition where the traffic is less bad at weekend dinner times, and parking is easier, but I do remember that the food there was superb.

Everything about this video is authentic. This is more than a story, it is history lost to the wind of war. All the recipes and tastes at this restaurant you might not find anymore in Viet Nam. After all, French Indochina was a civilization gone with the wind.

I am not sure about Vietnam today but as a Vietnamese living abroad, our family still cook these recipes such as Chao Tom, Canh chua, Cua rang Muoi etc etc . They are very common to the south vietnamese. It's not just war, but time and untold stories.

Quel conte de fe'e! What a fairy tale, no this is not sarcasm: it's wonderful to hear a story of Vietnamese (actually I think they are truly "Indochinese") expats that did not suffer as war collateral damages (besides losing their homes in VN.) I think the turning point is 1954 when the family returned to Saigon, made a quick assessment and decided that no, this is not the place to settle down, and sailed on (when I saw the brief glimpse of Ho chi Minh flashed on screen, my heart skipped a beat, "Oh no, please no...") My hat off to Mr. Dauplay the father for his sharp foresight, which steered his family to safe harbor (Marseille and beyond...) Side note: I got a chuckle out of "Dallas" pronounced the Thai way as "Dalat" (at first I thought they named the restaurant after a short-lived automobile that was produced in VN before 1975 named "La Dalat." Dalat is the name of a city so it's fair game to think of it as "le" - masculin / or "la" -feminin.)

I got a glimpse into the Vietnamese culture that I was never exposed to. Like many Americans I never even knew anyone Vietnamese until the refugees started showing up in the seventies. This was precious. I loved this bit of insight.

I can confirm that tata Suzanne was a very good cook . I already tried her cuisine over 40 years ago in California when I went to visit her in El Cerrito and many other times afterwards .

You will like Dalat like me . But don't go there now because it's still rainy season . The best time to visit this town is from end of December to end of April when it's dry and the wild cherry trees blossom @@JosephMarquez-pj9dp
