In a previous video I programmed a Baofeng BF-888 for PMR446, while it is not strictly legal it is better than the default frequencies that these radios come programmed with from the factory, I discuss the two legal options in the UK, amateur radio use or the simple light business licence at £75 for 5 years.
Be aware that while people do often use these on PMR446 it is illegal and if caught by Ofcom you could find the radios seized and fines levied against you, however I have not heard this happen to any user of these on PMR446, however as the default frequencies in the radio from the factory are in fact allocated to government and emergency services you may end up in some very serious trouble

Very good video. They are amazing radios for such a low price. Mine was £9.80 from eBay. I actually know of a Wetherspoon using them on the default frequencies!

Hello Sir Paul, your presentation is very informative. I am not being able to view your previous video, as furnished in the video description, where you have programmed BF-888s for PMR 446.

You dont need to program it(no need for cable) to remove the voice prompt. Go to channel 10 Then you need to turn off the radio hold the PTT and the MONI button While holding the buttons,turn on the radio You should only hear a beeping sound If not try again. Its literally written in the user manual.

CRT 7WP does 0.5w VHF/UHF 4w UHF & 5w VHF. Has removable antenna but being sold as a legal PMR446 16ch radio since it does 0.5w. The Baofeng BF-888S PLUS some if not most or all do 0.5w low power and 1.8w high power. The CRT 7WP is FCC type approved.

Also Ofcom doesn't regulate PMR446 so people use around 5w with yagis and such to reach further afield.

Hi Paul, thank you for your video on PMR446 legal radios. In the video, at 3 minutes 10 seconds, you briefly showed a radio that you said is legal. Please can I ask, what radio is it? Have you done a video on it? I am new to this and seek a pair of PMR446 legal radios for business use and wonder if that radio would be the item I need?

Most services using DMR but if the did they did on vhf for only one simple reason there is a lot of this radios on market and nobody can control them ! One more question to you sir if I using this radio on pmr or ham radio uhf or vhf and I transmit outside for example I’m taking dog for a walk a couple of miles away! Hot the in hell ocfom can track you ? I’m tell you how ! Is like trying to catch a wind in a open field
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU 2 жыл бұрын
Ofcom don't track anyone, they act on complaints of interference to licenced services which the cheap Chinese radios are capable of doing in the hands of Joe Public, a lot of services have moved to DMR yes but some are still analogue due to cost or practical reasons

@@HarryHamsterChannel well maybe ! Some people talking about of interference but we talking about specific frequency like pmr 0,5 w a when i tested where I live across the valley is 11miles but I’m up hills between a lot of houses 1000 maybe so technically the signal goes at least 11miles radius using 0.5w on pmr you saying I’m interference other people cos signal travels too far were I’m tested baofeng 5 w down the valley the signal goes pretty good for about 1,5 miles uhf about the same when I change to pmr frequency. Technically talking on 05 w on pmr all day 11miles across the valley technically I could disturb more people than in the valley on pmr or uhf . I was born in a cave is illegal to be free you have to work pay taxes ,insurance, and plenty licenses nearly for everything and for a split sec i fought we are living in Communism country in 70 tees where gov listen 👂 people’s on walkie talkies. With ur technology and 5 G is sad like you said it they still listen and even recorded nowadays is sad feel sorry for those folks

I put one of these into a simplex ammo can repeater on top of the shed. Piece of crap lasted a year before the battery gave out in the 110 degree heat. Radio is fine. I occasionally shop for better radios. Then buy more Baofeng's. Has to be why so many people buy multiples of these things.

i dont give a damn about any license. i only use them for offroading in the countryside and i need something stronger then those kids walki talkies. i dont wanna interfer with any kind of emergency, police or other services so i did programm them to use the legal pmr frequencies...but with more ummpf for the better range. i love them...they are tough, simple and have a good range. but they could be a bit louder though.

Your comment that "it's not strictly legal," but "better than the default frequencies" is really strange from a licensed HAM. Unless something radio related is "strictly legal," it is absolutely illegal. Especially as a licensed HAM, you can't claim ignorance of the laws related to using radios in your home (licensed) country.
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU 9 ай бұрын
For a start I'm not claiming ignorance of the laws, I know full well these are not legal for use on PMR446, my point was and always has been that if people want to use these on PMR446 that is absolutely on them, the frequencies programmed into these from the factory generally are random and have more potential to cause interference to something safety critical whereas operation on PMR446 less so. Holding an amateur radio licence does not give me the right to tell people they can't use a radio that is illegal to use on certain frequencies, I merely suggest so and let them make that choice
@geekchameleon
@geekchameleon 9 ай бұрын
@@PaulMcGeeM0WNU But by saying they're "not strictly legal," you are implying/leading people to infer that they are anything other than _zero percent_ legal, AKA wholly illegal. As a licensed HAM (which I am and have been for thirty years), I believe we absolutely have the obligation to tell others when we know for a fact that what they are doing/wanting to do related to radio transmissions is illegal. We are not telling them they can't do it, we are telling them that our respective legislature/regulatory agency/international treaties have made their intended action illegal. If they choose to proceed and violate the law., we aren't responsible for their acts _unless_ we gave them advice on how to do it and make it easier to get away with it. As a licensed HAM, we are disrespecting the service and all of our fellow HAMs if we give others advice on how they can break the regulations which protect our service and the services used by others. In this video, you are giving advice on how to break the law in a slightly less egregious way - which means you are giving advice on how to break the law.

High and low power makes no difference on this model, it’s all the same. I’ve seen between 1 and 3.5 watts on various reviews. A great little radio, short range, so getting “in serious trouble” would be fairly unusual seeing as ofcom haven’t prosecuted anyone in years for this kind of thing Chuck a better antenna on and you have a very low cost walkie talkie, even better get a UV5 as well and you can program both the same My 888s I have 8 on pmr, 7 on factory settings where no one bothers me, channel 16 blank so it scans the rest, simples
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU
@PaulMcGeeM0WNU 3 жыл бұрын
Ofcom would only prosecute in cases of serious interference where safety of life was involved, people do use these on PMR446 and don't get Ofcom on their backs
@NizarBE
@NizarBE 3 жыл бұрын
Imagine you are in a country where you need a license for using an walkie talkie that has more then 0.5 watt, you are illegal. Even tho you se it on 0.5 still is illegal and you can get fines to 45k or more because you're outting people and Departements on danger. Make sure what you buy!
