Do you believe in horoscopes? Does reading a favorable one make your day and vice versa?

People believe in horoscopes because they pay attention to the points that are coencidentally true and ignore all the rest that are false

It’s fine to look at them casually, but I feel genuinely sorry for anyone who actually makes life decisions based on them

It's always awkward when someone starts talking to me about astrology. Like I want to laugh or make fun of it, but then I realize they genuinely believe in it, so I just smile and nod and say nothing. I hate it.

in high school i wrote the school magazine horoscope i made everything up even sometimes copying from the newspaper and mixing the signs (for ex. i wrote for Leo what was written for Aquarius) no one ever find out (or they did and just didn't care enough)

Just had a discussion with my close girl friends a few days ago about dating people with different star signs. They were saying how dating a Capricorn guy is not good at all and to quote them, "Capricorns are indecisive people and not good dating material." My birthday date is under the Capricorn sign and when they realised, they started to backtrack and say, "Oh well this applies to Capricorn men only." and "Woman and men are different." Right. Maybe it's not so healthy to push the blame on the failure of your previous relationships onto horoscopes because this doesn't give us a chance to self-examine ourselves.

I really try not to subconsciously judge the people who believe in it, but it's really difficult...

Horoscopes are flatly and empirically indeterminant of anything significant whatsoever. No reliable new information can ever be extracted from them. They're written to be believable manifestations of essentially random statements for the sake of maintaining an audience of those not skeptical enough to notice the tricks being played. There are people in this comment section saying things like "Well, they're not always right, but sometimes they really help!" To that, I say: even a stopped clock is right twice in a day. Simply because a given method of guessing can produce statistically insignificant anecdotes of success is not even so much as evidence that it is at all helpful for any caliber of decision making. Someone who uses horoscopes, tarot cards, crystal balls, or any other manner of quackery to attempt prognostication may as well roll a few dice or just blindly guess their outcome. In fact, the latter options would save a lot of time, energy, stress, and/or money. Think for yourself, guys; don't fall for silly tricks made to manipulate you.

I’ve always felt that many of those who believe in horoscopes do so because they feel unfulfilled in life and want something to blame instead of accepting responsibility for their shortcomings. They’re often the same credulous people who think they find validity in superstitions, including religion.

As someone studying astrophysics my major always gets confused with astrology. A lot of people tell me that they thought that’s what it was. I now just tell people I’m a physics major because it’s mostly accurate and harder to get confused.

People believe in horoscopes, superstitions and God for the same reasons: They're afraid. They need explanations for things they cannot understand, so they insert arbitrary beliefs to compensate.

The idea behind Horoscopes is to make general statements so you feel like they're onto something or know something about you. It's fair to say about half of those statements won't apply to you and give them the benefit of the doubt, but also keep in mind that since they use general, non-specific statements, about half of them will apply to you anyways. These sorts of practices lack merit, and I think letting something like that impact your life without even knowing if it's credible is...a bad idea, to put it nicely.

I believe in natal chart description but not in individual Sun sign based horoscopes or advice based solely on the sun sign in newspapepers or online.Real astrology for me is not just based on the Sun sign.There are other planets involved including Moon, Mercury,Mars,Venus and some others including Pluto.Collectively they make up our charts and who we are really are however they can't predict genetics and specific circumstances in life.Some people are just lucky no matter where the planets fall in the chart and most people have complex charts which different astrologers interpret sometimes differently.The 4 elements Fire,Earth,Air and Water make up this very adverse world and the chart explain conflicts that planets effect each other sort of.Most people don't understand astrology besides the sun sign which I believe is ignorant astrology.I do blame my extremely adverse Venus rising on the fact I am still bachelor at 46.John Mayer for exmaple has his Venus aspected simmilarly and near Asc and still bachelor at 40.

My wife enjoys horoscopes. After being baffled by this during our early years, I realized it’s almost like a fantasy story to her. She doesn’t really believe it has any objective or practical meaning, any more than a good fantasy novel.

I think one way to "check" if astrology is accurate is to look at signs other than yours. See if they fits you. In my case, I admit they are generic but my sign does fit me the most. What do you think?

A lot of astrology is told through very vague descriptions. And I can really understand how that can lead to such faithful beliefs in it. But what's interesting is non-vague, very specific descriptions of personality in relation to a sign, that is so accurate it's almost scary. Astrology itself makes no scientific sense, but what if it's not the stars, but rather the time of year born at that influences potential personality attributes? I can't imagine there being any scientific causation there either, but I find it too intruiging to just be some coincidence. Especially considering that whenever I read a horoscope description they are almost always true. And I'm talking about the oddly specific ones.
