Great video, I've been wanting to make myself a knife for a few years. I haven't because I've been worried about how to do the scales. This video is great, I think I'm ready now.

I wish I saw this vid yesterday. I'm making my 1st knife, and destroyed my handle scales trying to work these things out. Luckily I have more material to make more scales. This will really help. Thanks!

@flashgordon6238
@flashgordon6238 4 жыл бұрын
@Bad Ass- I made six trips to Christchurch in the '80s....Doubt you will find Corbys in a store -even here in the USA. I have seen them at Knife Shows. Office supply stores should have Chicago screws for paper binding. You can always buy Corby fasteners online here: usaknifemaker.com/

@@flashgordon6238 I'm watching this video because I saw them in a local auto/tool/farmer/etc. shop flyer. Makes sense why they were listed near the micarta. One day I'll learn knife making, I've wanted to since I was a teen, but for now I'll take my new knowledge and leave buying them for another day

Thanks for the tips! I bought a knife blank but it has 9/32" holes. All of the Corby bolts that I found are smaller. Would you say that as long as the scales are counter drilled correctly that it wouldn't be a big issue if there was a 1mm difference with the bolts?
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps 4 жыл бұрын
Yes sir. It's ok if the holes in the tang are slightly over sized. Make sure you cut your handles scales a little large. Also make sure the holes in your scales are perfectly in line with each other so as not to get crooked with each other when attached. Also use epoxy for sure. make sure it fills in all the gaps in the tang.

You can drill some more holes in the tang if need to!!
@GenericSpace
@GenericSpace Жыл бұрын
Something else to keep in-mind is that if the holes in your tang are too tight and you have ANY alignment issues, it can put undue stress on the scales and force them to chip-out when installing any kind of pin or Corby as well as even cracking or splitting the scales. It's for this reason that I've seen where a lot of smiths have actually suggested the holes in the tang *should* be slightly larger than the pin or Corby.

And I thought corny fasteners were used for removable scales. I’ve always used epoxy and plain old pins. I like it. What would you use however for removable scales which I’ve never done before. Thanks. Very informative video
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Chip, I really like the corbies due to their strength in comparison to straight or peined pins. I've never done removable scales, however, I've seen the hardware sold on various knife supply sites. Normally you'll have to create a step for the screw heads to sit on that places the heads of the screw under the "surface" of the handle scales. Glad you liked the video!
