The original bass line was one a guitarist would play. The second was one of a player who is learning how the bass works in an ensemble. And the third sounds like an actual bassist.

bass is so important, anchoring the harmonic structure, rhythm, and sonics of the track. if it’s not right it can drag down everything else.

Paul didn’t really add the bass part last. They were reworking arrangements so much, that at the end he’d replay the bass start to finish to glue it together. That said, I literally write the bass part last in my tracks because I’m a guitarist, and dread figuring out the bass part. I can totally relate to this video. The bass groove can change the entire vibe of the song, and it takes work to get the intention right, and a weird thing to do last. No rules!

that (new) bassline lifts the entire song

Leading into the chord root with a half or whole tone above or bellow can also help a lot, make the progressions flow more smootly. Similar to 'walk the dog' jazz bass lines.

A great example of "the right arrangement mixes itself". Can't wait to hear the track. I loved what Dan Dugmore did but now his part is even more deliciously perfect!

Such a great refinement to a bass part, man. Amazing how just reaching for--not crazy awesome Geddy Lee-ness--but just slightly more refinement...gives that track an even deeper heartbeat. I needed exactly this today... thanks!

Thanks for another great video, Doc. Interesting - the first bass line sounded dull and MIDI'sh to me, but when I heard the final one I was like "wooow, what a fitting bass part" and immediately stopped paying attention to its sound! Long story short: when the part itself is good, the sound doesn't so much matter. Definitely something to ponder.

I love when I can guess where you’re going with the video before you actually dive into the techniques! As someone who grew up a guitarist and shifted to bass after college this stuff hits home. Bass is a completely different instrument and feeling the weight and the power in your hands during a jam sesh is truly underrated. Golden info as always, rock on Dr. Bobert 🤘🏼

Another great one Bobby! Little trick forn intervals that I learned in music school which they always tested us on - first 2 notes of each! Bonus marks if we got the key correct too! 2nd - Jaws Theme Min 3rd - Happy Birthday Maj 3rd - Oh When The Saints 4th - Here Comes The Bride 5th - Star Wars Theme (not Darth Vader haha) 6th - 3 Note NBC Theme (the old one) 7th - Old Star Trek Theme

I love everything you are talking about. I use EZ drums. I don't know if it's monitor speakers I am listening through, but 12k EQ on the drums were killing me. not criticizing, I respect everything you do. just letting you know what I was hearing, thought I would share...

I love it when a track alone can transport you to a specific place! Before you mentioned driving southern Calif coast, I thought of the tune “Ventura Hwy” by America! Great production Bob! Great tip!!!

Other great bass players would be Jones (Zeps) Butler (Sabbath), Deacon (Queen) among so many more. What they seem to do is lead the movement of the tune within the beat/groove. When recording bass, I've always been inspired by the way my favorite bass players keep the flow, and inject some interest into the tune. It is rare I work bass in early in my recordings but I try to make it sound as organic as I can. Thanks for the post Bobby.

I've recently started paying more attention to the arrangement of songs I really like to figure out why I like them. The bass parts have consistently been a major contributing factor, even though I couldn't have told you what the bassline was beforehand. Now I like to play a game called "would this song suck with a boring bassline?"

This saying is more about live setting, but it applies to recording too: If a band has a great singer or guitarist, the crowd says, "Wow that's a great singer / guitarist." But if a band has a great drummer and bass player, the crowd says, "Wow that's a great band."

EZ Bass rocks. That's what I use at home. I don't have EZ Drummer 3, but I do have the predecessor, EZ Drummer 2. RE: Bass part making the other parts sound better - There are many times when I've put 2 instrument parts together and ended up hearing something that I don't even think I played. Like some magical solution of two elements that creates a reaction to form a 3rd, greater part out of the ooze.

I'm 3:50 into the video and I'm going to put out a guess... the bass notes need to finish sooner - create more push and pull with the snare. I could be totally and embarrassingly wrong!

Reassuring to hear even seasoned pros have to deal with issues like this. It’s really hard to step back, stop trying to force something to work and change it for something that actually worrks without bandaids. Makes a massive difference if bassline actually supports the song.
