I think the first movie proved we can trust Matt Reeves with these characters. I don’t care which version we get. I just can’t wait to see which way the story will go and how it will all play out.

I think Matt Reeves' version of clay face could be somewhere in the middle of hyper realism and comic book fantasy. Like, perhaps his face is the only part of him that can be morphed, maybe we could get a scene with him Infront of a mirror, manually pushing and manipulating his face, sculpting it like clay. I think that would be both really cool and really creepy.

I think that having the golden age style inspired clayface could be really interesting. I think a good way to do this would be to make him the ultimate master of disguise. They could make him able to shift and morph his clay mask to allow him to look like anyone he wants to. This concept could even be extended to more parts other than just the mask and have him use clay prosthetics to change him proportions as well. They could also make him an expert impressionist so he can mimic anyone's voice and further disguise himself. For example, he could disguise himself as a mob boss's guard in order to get alone with said mob boss and kill them. He could even disguise himself as pre-established characters like Penguin or Gordon. He could also have his mask make him look more monstrous to scare his victims before he kills them. And if they really wanted to go with the clay gimmick, they could make it so the weapons he uses are made out of hardened clay. So overall, I think this version of clayface could have a lot of potential.

I like to think Reeves is making a horror-centered Batman franchise. He made The Riddler a Zodiac/Jigsaw-esque killer, so imagine if he made Clayface in the same vein of The Thing or Frankenstein?

I want him to be the golden age version! I picture a House of Wax kind of serial killer, like Vincent. It could be creepy af and still realistic. Vincent had a disfigurement and filled in his face with wax and killed people to be wax figures in his museum. It doesn’t have to be copy and paste, but I could totally see something like that in the Reeves movies

I love seeing new takes ok iconic characters, and for those who want to see a monster clayface, there’s a VERY good chance we could see that in James Gunn’s DCU! Best of both worlds

I am so interested to see what Reeves does with Clayface (If it happens), at first I thought the sequel could include freeze with croc, since they would utilize the flud to the fullest, but now I think clayface and freeze could work well in the film or even scarecrow and clayface since the fear gas would make clayface appear huge and monsterius.

I don't mind much at all with how clayface is handled, I just know that he'll be a great character regardless I fully trust Matt the GOAT

The first film felt so grounded but I’d love to see some meta-humans if they think they can pull it off. I don’t see Clayface as a main villain. He’d be a great secondary villain though.

I want a Golden Age Clayface that uses hyper realistic prosthetics/makeup to change his identity throughout the film. Have Mike Marino do the same kind of transformative work on his appearance as he did for Colin Farrell.

I agree 100%. Not only does Reeves want to keep it grounded, he also loves the Golden Age Batman comics. It makes perfect sense. I think it’d be part of a wider story involving other rogues, but he’d definitely go Golden Age inspired.

I think it would be interesting to see clay face as an actor/makeup artist and have him make his own prosthetics and clothing throughout the movie and he can be in a lot of scenes that we don’t even think he’s in. He can be everywhere and nowhere at the same time, messing with Batman without Batman knowing who is doing things to him. I think that would be an interesting villain for Batman to face.

I trust Reeves to pull off Clayface. I’m sensing for the first two acts, a serial killer House of Wax vibe then finally a third act where Clayface is a complete horror monster vibe like the Thing

Rather than having clayface as the main villain, I think it would be cool if they made Hush the main villain with clayface teaming up with him, just like in the comic. That's just me tho🤷🏽‍♂️ I just hope Mr Freeze is used in the 3rd if he's not in the 2nd

If this is true, then I believe Reeves will go with Clayface's origin when he was very first introduced and keep it in real form. There's no way he's going with the fantastical direction in his universe.

This is the first time clayface will be in a Batman movie. Can’t wait to see him on the big screen in live action.

People tend to forget that grounded and realism aren’t the same realism is breaking down the characters to fit into the real world grounded is to make them fit in the universe that they are building the Arkham games grounded characters but they were never stripped of their fantastical elements And imagine in the Batman part 2 hush and clayface work together and in the end we find out that clayface was never found and he’s now a deformed monster who will return in a monsterous clayface form

I'm hoping anything Clayface related would be placed in Gods and Monsters because I 100% agree with what you're saying, Reeves would probably draw inspiration from the golden age Clayface and while I'm sure it could be done in an interesting way, I'd still prefer to see monster Clayface which I think could be accomplished to his full potential under James Gunn

This and Mr. Freeze in the next sequel whould make a banger trilogy. First one was a detective thriller, this one could be a horror mystery and the third one a tragic romance. THE SUPERIOR BATMAN TRILOGY.

I've never heard of the first version of clayface, hell, I never knew there was an original version. But if that's what they use I'll be all for seeing that. It definitely sounds creepy and I like that. The clayface we all know from the animated series would definitely be in the new DCU.

I love that we are getting this grounded exploration through the Reeves stuff and I agree with you 100% about how they'll approach Clayface. So much potential Either way i love these grounder character explorations. I want to see the eco-terrorist version of Poison Ivy like she was in the animated series.

The Golden Age version would really fit the detective focus in the Reeve's version. However, instead of the literal clay mask, he should be a master of disguise. Similar to Maise Williams character in GOT. Then he purposely allows a witness for each murder. So each witness will give a different description, causing the main puzzle for Batman to solve.

Boba, thanks for the quick news updates! I absolutely agree with your take on Clayface. One thing that is interesting to me going into the sequel is what kind of criminal we will be getting in Part II. You could argue that we won’t automatically be getting another SERIAL KILLER but maybe someone with different methods and motives. Not sure what that looks like, but it seems that Matt Reeves made Riddler a serial killer DUE TO HIS MOTIVES and goals. Clayface being a morphing or disguising criminal could have lots of opportunities for what gets him in trouble with Battinson. Thanks again!

I think another good point of reference for a more ‘realistic’ Clayface would be from Batman: Earth One volume 3 would features a version of Clayface that is definitely inspired by the golden age version but does it’s own thing and does so really effectively and I could see being used to fit right into what Matt Reeves is doing. Especially since the first movie felt very inspired by the first Earth One volume.

I agree with most of what you said boba. But I do feel like Reeves will probably adapt a version or clayface that is somewhere in between his original version in the comics and the current clay monster that we see in most versions today. Ie he starts out as his original version from the comics and then by the end turns into a more tonned down version of the clay monster we see in other versions. This would be similar to how the riddler was adapted in the first film.

In his earliest appearances, Clayface had no superpowers, but he wore a clay mask.

You know what could be interesting? If they made Clayface like how he is depicted in A Serious House on a Serious Earth graphic novel. In that story, Clayface was a guy with a disease he was trying to spread to Batman. He is not in the comic very much but that would be cool. Maybe they could do what they did on Gotham where he can change his apperance due to his DNA being altered. Or they could go with the golden age serial killer approach. All 3 could be plausible. I highly doubt that they would make him the giant shapeshifting mud monster though.

If it's true, Reeves can honestly mix the two versions of Clayface. It can first start out with the Golden Age version but towards the middle/end of the movie, maybe Battinson chases the "Clayface Killer" into ACE Chemicals which then Karlo falls into a vat of chemicals, Battinson views him as ☠️ and carries that weight with him to the end of the movie (maybe he fights Mr. Freeze as well in the movie) when the movie ends and there a cutscene at the end-Karlo is maybe seen back at his apartment with droopy, bumpy, clay-like skin and further down the Reeve-verse that Clayface learns to do the ever-so modern things that mainstream Clayface does

Maybe hes a secondary villain. He could be like a hitman for a larger villain and hes really hard to catch because he is really good and changing his appearance

I personally think a more grounded version of Clayface could work, but I am more interested in how Matt Reeves could develop Batman’s story and give him an arc that directly relates to someone like Clayface, specially now that Batman seems to have grown a lot by the end of the first film; rather than figuring out how a villain would work in Matt’s grounded world. That’s mu personal preference, and I would really love if you could add that take to your Rogues Gallery Adaptation series. Cheers!

I agree with you that the golden age clayface, Basil karlo will definitely fit into Reeve’s Batman. Like the serial killer in the joker and the riddler. It would make sense that he does it this way. If it was the mud version like in the animated series. I will find it weird tbh. Pattinson’s Batman is very detective and crime related and also quite dark but if the mud version comes in to Batman 2. I think it’s gonna change the whole atmosphere of the trilogy. That’s my take on this

I heard it mentioned sometime ago, that a character with a similar description to Clayface was referenced to appear in the Penguin spinoff. The description being something along these lines: "a former actor gone mad after he's turned down for the main part in a remake of one his movies." So it's likely Clayface will be introduced there first probably as a minor character and play a bigger part in The Batman Part II. Also maybe he'll be featured in the Arkham Asylum spinoff too.

This news is refreshing. Clayface has such a raw background and this sounds promising. I’m actually writing a book about my own Batman 2 with the main villain being Mr freeze. something to do in my spare time.

Clay face as the main villain would be a sick ass concept and I’m down to see what Reeves would do with that, also I don’t think the golden age storyline is as boring as people make it out to be. Picture that storyline with inter weaving characters, storylines, plot twists and Matt Reeves’ touch. That has potential to be a marvelous story. Edit: not saying he’ll just straight copy and paste that story, but he’d do his own spin on it.

I really appreciate your detailed and thorough reporting on this! There is a LOT of misinformation out there with people running with the headline but not looking at the original quote. Thanks so much for breaking this down in such a contextual manner - it matters very much what Reeves has said before, and many aren't taking that into account. A golden age-themed Clayface would be a really interesting villain to explore the theme of identity, which could be key in the next movie. Bruce has learned that he needs to be a symbol of hope to the people, but how should he do that? Who is he going forward? Putting on the cowl and suit make him someone different than Bruce, but who is that? Who is Bruce when he's not Batman? You could mirror that theme with a Clayface in some kind of mask essentially becoming someone or something else as well.

In the 60s series, there was False Face. He could alter his face to look like anyone, but not his body. Not sure if he was a budget version of clayface, but going by Reeves style, you could have a Clayface like that, because it would be hard to incorporate a full body shapeshifting character creating weapons like the T-1000. He could change his face, and put on a wardrobe to imitate Gordon, Alfred, Wayne, whoever.

Hey, Boba... I brought up the villain solo films in a live stream & you talked about it. I find it interesting that Flanagan states the news is speculative but does not say that it's completely inaccurate. It could be partially accurate. He said that if it comes to fruition, he'll let us know which means that it might just be in the works but hasn't come to pass. What if his pitch is actually within the Reeves' universe? What if he's working with Reeves? And it could be a combination of the karlov and haggen store lines, combining them. And that convinced high into The Batman 2. I think as far as Reeves would allow his universe is a substance that does make the face more malleable.

They could go the fantastical route in The Batman 2 by introducing the Scarecrow’s fear toxin like they did in Batman Begins. And at the same time go with a traditional origin story of Clayface where he wears masks.

Hey Boba! Love all your content-it really makes waiting for these movies easier to bear. So thank you, first of all. I would love it if they had the Clayface actor play everyone he turned into. Have it literally just be top-notch prosthetics (aided by minimal digital assistance). I'd love if it always looks just a little off, even at his best there should always be a tell, sometimes a bigger tell than others. They'd obviously need to find an actor that could play the other characters believably. And they could have the other actors dub their voices over his performance, or just digitally alter his impersonations. They could have him be like a Daniel Day-Lewis esque actor, who's addicted to the thrill of "walking through other people's shoes," looking for a more visceral role. I believe we are getting a golden age version of clayface, it matches the world of Matt Reeve's The Batman and I love it, I am not saying that the monster version is my least favorite I love that version as well, I am saying the GA version fits well in that world and I have no problem with it (I'll understand if everyone else don't like it though)

I like all of this. “Clayface” being a movie from 90’s and now there is a remake that’s doesn’t include the original actor is great. Twist might be that the prosthetics guy is the actual killer and he frames the actor. Love Boba videos.

i REALLY think matt reeves could make a character who uses some kind of drug to shane the shape of his face, in a really grotesque way and show Basil really reworking his face in a very horror based thematic kind of way. i could even see him taking it a step further and having his experimented on till he loses his form, then do a very realistic, practical effect clay face that is really similar to the movie The Thing, so that we rarely see him fully but we’re shown in a really horrifying way, and we see batman help a broke. man whose lost his identity even possibly while he deals with Mr Freeze at the same time

It’s gonna a wild few months. Break everything down and dissect the evidence and draw from what we know, so damn well, I appreciate you. Def not interested in clay monster fantastical version ( dont know why ppl need that bad) and love that concept art but also like the idea I saw of certain leather face inspired maybe wearing the mask flesh of victims and creating a mystery surrounding that as he kills his next victim. But I do question whether or not it can be justified as the main villain and not just side villain or not all and or they do have something planned in Reeves’ world just not Batman Part II

Mix the realistic with a slight supernatural edge. I'd write Clayface in the vein of the Stephen King miniseries The Outsider. A 8man named Terry is suspected of murder, claims his innocence and has an alibi, but the physical evidence points to him, who arrests Terry, is confronted with the possibility of a supernatural entity that can shape-shift and feed on the grief of its victims. He teams with a detective who has a belief in the supernatural and who believes in the legend of El Cuco, a Mexican monster that resembles the killer. Its the perfect mix of the supernatural and the natural world. Reeves took the same approach to his Apes Trilogy, it could work well.

Batman part 3, or arkham series Professor Hugo Strage as the main villian, played by (Dave Bautista) End fight scene, the professor takes off his Lab coat, and he's some muscular beast underneath 🤯🤯🤯

Interesting. Also Bill Jett Ramey has gotten so many things right when it comes to Batman by teasing images on Twitter, it's why I follow him. His latest two teases were that of Harvey Dent and Julie Madison. The latter may make sense here considering that Julie, like Karlo, was an actor. She's also one of Bruce Wayne's earlier love interests, so Matt Reeves could build upon Bruce's character and maybe even the Playboy side of things. I believe that Julie in the earlier comics was targeted by Clayface for taking his place in a role, or being part of that crew.

I would take the Batverse Clayface announcement with a grain of salt. Watching Twitter when this was all released, it really seemed like a "I got a scoop, too!" announcement after it was announced that Flanagan pitched a solo Clayface film just minutes before.

the animated version of clayface with his metamorphic ability to sasume any form shape or person that he desires would be a costly challenge for maybe and unknown actor to play as well as a female actor in batman the animated series 2 part episode of feat of clay. late actor martin landau would have been amazing to portray his character if he were still living today. RIP!

If they do it, I feel like Javier Bardem would be the most fly & menacing version of this character.

I figured characters like Victor Zsasz, Deacon Blackfire, and Hush would be more likely but his could be interesting if the lean in to the horror elements.

Clayface is also my choice for The Batman sequel villain, but here’s my pitch for how it’ll go: Now for this pitch, there will be another villain to appear, which I’ll say does have a more sci-fi angle, so it probably wouldn’t work. BUT as some may know, test screenings for the first movie stated how the first Reeves movie gave off psychological horror vibes. And since there are some scary and monstrous looking villains, monster=horror. So here’s the pitch: “Recently, on the news, there’s been a line a chains for new beauty/cosmetic products spreading around Gotham. But word has been getting out that there have been murders of many high profiled business people who all are being killed for strange reasons. The people are all linked to Roland Daggett, the business owner of the beauty chains, however no proof is shown that Daggett is behind the murders. But Bruce/Batman is still suspicious that Daggett is still not telling the truth about something. In the meantime, Matt Hagen, a famed actor is just getting off the set of filming and heading back to his room, when it’s revealed that he’s hiding a dark secret when his face while handsome in the films is deformed, due to a car accident, when nobody sees. He has a supply of beauty cream that is made by Daggett's company, where it's reveal that Daggett offered him a lifetime supply of it, in exchange for being a test subject for the cream when being prepared to sell out. The cream which was made by none other than Pamela Isley made from rare plants that have the ability to form into specific shapes. Isley however has other plans, where thru Batman's detective work realizes that it was her who murdered those people through her poisoning the beauty products, specifically lipsticks. Batman begins a mission to find Isley's hideout, where we get some intense scenes when he arrives to investigate her place. But the area is filled with so many plants. Batman just so happens to touch one that it grasps him, to which we get a jump-scare and the plants attack him, causing either Batman to escape or personally meet Isley, who refers herself to Poison Ivy. Ivy's plan is revealed that she's attempting to murder all the people who deal with Daggett, including him, due to the fact that they've been destroying rare nature just to build their corrupt business which leads to Batman realizing that his theory is true about Daggett, being not who he seems. As it turns out, Daggett's business is rid with underground crime, laundering, and fraud. Daggett plans on take over many businesses, one of them being Wayne Enterprises, which Bruce/Batman doesn't realize yet. Daggett needs Hagen to join a gang to take on a hit for one of the businesses, and says if Hagen refuses he'll cut his supply off. So Hagen does so, but the hit attack goes south, and one witness recognizes Hagen, except claims that he looks like Bruce Wayne. With this information, there is a warrant out for Bruce Wayne’s arrest, forcing Bruce as Batman to flee and try to clear his name before things get out of hands. Meanwhile, Daggett has Hagen killed for what he did, as an attempt to avoid half measures. Hagen is presumably killed by being forced to swallow an entirely tank of the beauty cream formula and left for dead, only for his body to turn into clay. Hagen now has become a literal blob who can transform his shape (Imagine a live action version of Tetsuo's mutation (Akira) and Ditto (Pokemon) + the T-1000, but more scary.). Hagen swears revenge on Daggett, but when Poison Ivy hears about him, she decides to cut a deal with him, in which he helps her plan her murder several off the Gotham elites and make her plant growing spree, and she'll give him Daggett to kill. This can lead to a great showdown with some creepy imagery of Hagen (now called Clayface) and Poison Ivy's monstrous plants attacking the public, and an epic showdown with Batman fighting them. Not really too sure on how Bruce fights Ivy and her plants, but he does create special defense mechanisms for his suit in order to avoid her plants getting the best of him. The fight between Bruce and Clayface however becomes really scary as Bruce sees that Hagan can’t fully concentrate whenever he’s mutating (Leading to some imagery that gives off The Thing). But to some up in short, Batman ends up defeating both Clayface and Poison Ivy, but one of them manages to escape (More than likely Clayface), Daggett is arrested for his crimes, and Bruce Wayne’s name is cleared. There will be a mid-credit scene though, with one of the villains on the run. But they happen to meet someone in the shadowy alleyways, who says that he’s been watching them, and offers his hand to them, which is revealed to be covered in bandages.” So there you have it. Basically, this movie can pay homage to 80s monster movies, like The Thing, The Fly and Little Shop of Horrors, mixed with Batman: The Animated Series where I got these stories from. This also sort of gives a more darker take on beauty products, (Though I’m not sure how they’re gonna be able to commercialize that. Like imagine the actress for Poison Ivy saying, “Try the new L’Oréal lipstick, where love can get TOXIC.” or the actor for Clayface advertising for a CHANEL face cream, and the commercial ends saying, “And check out the new Batman movie.”.).

Another thing that stood out to me was Collin Farrel mentioning how create the MAKEUP was AGAIN when they started shooting the Penguin. Something tells me he wasn't referring to his own and we will likely see either Clayface or Two Face in the Penguin. Maybe even Clayface Two Face and Scarface... (3 Faces instead of 3 Jokers) So many possibilities 😱

imo I do not see the reason behind using Clayface if you do not want to use the most popular version of him. i disagree about the comparison to Riddler. Riddler grounded version did not sway enough from the OG version. Clayface popular version is drastically different from the grounded one.

When I think of Golden Age Clayface I think of the prosthetics. I then think of the puppet Scarface. And a Ventriloquist would also be some sort of stage performer and fit in. And yes the CIA does use prosthetics in real life and they are a lot better than anyone would believe. Think about it.. 90% of people I talk to about the Penguin thought it was Robert Deniro lol

I think the golden age clayface would work way better than the modern version . The main thing about clayface is his ability to impersonate others . In the modern version it’s shapeshifting but in a grounded version it could be something like prosthetics . Him Being a big monster doesn’t aid anything apart from being visually interesting. If anything it would take away from the movie, it being too outlandish . Something like prosthetics on the other hand would work, making him be able to blend in and look like other people . Essentially, a guy who is very good at disguise . Like you said, it doesn’t have to be real , just believable . The level of convincingness of his disguises could be a lot better than the reality but it should be grounded . I think they could go several different places with that idea alone . My idea for what they could do is have him be a type of spy for hire who disguises himself as other people in order to get information or assassinate . How he is able to do is because he is deformed . He is missing parts of his face and can put different prosthetics on to look like different people . For example he has no nose so he can put a fake nose on . He has dentures so he can have fake teeth . Unlike a normal person wearing prosthetics he is able to entirely change the features he has , possibly even fake bone structure . Because his face is mainly made of material (like silicon) and how he is able to ‘mould’ his face he is called ‘clayface’. I think he could have gotten these deformation from an illness or by accident but I think I like the idea most that he did it to himself to disguise better . I think the reason should be kind of left vague though . Even if that’s not what they do , they can still go some interesting places with it .

Boba in 1990 Liam Neeson starred in a movie called Darkman. He was heavily scarred in the face and used prosthetics to change into anyone that he wanted to look like. This could be the real world Clay Face, and would be a really cool idea. If they got Liam Neeson to play Clay Face, it would be the chefs kiss.

Personally I think the golden age, “evil Lon Chaney” version of Clayface could be a really interesting idea, especially with the noir style of this universe. Those articles don’t convince me of the validity of this rumor however. I still would love to see the Matt Reeves version of scarecrow. But as the main villain with some quite scary Arkham games style visions

I’ve no doubt that Reeves would do something compelling with clayface, though that character wouldn’t be my first choice (I’d actually prefer for him to be introduced in the penguin series as someone Batman captures off screen, cause obviously batman would still be active during the series, so we’d get some insight into what he’s up to during this time and get to establish another rogues gallery member) Still holding out hope for mad hatter in the sequel!

I mean clay face would cool for sure , it’s never been done as is Batman fans know . But my main hope was the court of owls . That was what I was really wanting to see

I actually have always loved Classic Clayface sure it's simple and generic sure but I love it because it always gave me Scream 3 vibes

I think having multiple actors portray his different faces is probably the way they would do it with one MAIN actor as the character under the masks.

unfortunate that we wont be seeing mr freeze if this is the case considering they were hardcore setting up the joker for the third movie. it could be possible to have him appear in an ensemble if his origins are in the arkham show but i would like to have seen his character fully explored in matt reeves's writing and visual style. still hoping for an impactful hugo strange in arkham

re the contact lens tech.... there are confirmed patents out there for SIMILAR tech already, not quite as advanced looking or comfortable to use as in the movie I admit, but in keeping with Reeves ethos... it is not a massive stretch of the imagination or totally impossible thing to witness in our lifetime/reality... Certainly be refreshing to have Clayface done on big screen and with a compelling back story, Reeves will give us the best shot at it than anything that has gone before, no doubt
