Produced by Motorola Teleprograms, this short film from the "Roll Call" series introduces the police officer’s baton and the proper methods of use. (:14). The title screen appears over police officers meeting at the station for training. All are equipped with batons (:22). The instructor points to the butt of the baton (:41), the grommet (:43) and the point (:46). He then shows the proper method to grab the weapon (:51). The various methods to strike using the baton are depicted (1:28). The officers conduct a demonstration on how to react when use of the baton is necessary (2:18). The appropriate location on a human’s chest to hit in order to drive them back is shown (2:50). The men pair off in order to practice the movements learned (3:37). The one-handed carry is demonstrated (3:56). The instructor applies a whipping motion to his baton (5:30). He informs them if the first blow is high, the next must be low (6:24) as vice versa. The five count from the ring is shown (6:47). The six count is demonstrated (8:15). The instructor shows the men the best method to use the baton during riots (10:43) in order to move the crowd back. The film begins to conclude as the men form a long line at the back of the room with the batons at forearm’s position (11:39). They move into the on-guard position and then move out (11:45). It concludes on an image of the Sergeant’s badge (11:49). The film acknowledges the assistance of the men from the West Covina Police Department (11:54).

All we had in my day was a gun and a stick. That baton got a lot of use. My Field Training Officer saved my life with her baton. I was brand new. A suspect was going to stab me with a broken bottle when she blocked his attack and broke both of his collar bones with her stick.

Damn, that sounds quite impressive! How did she do that, did she attacked him from the front or how?

I learned the draw strike from Hanbo techniques and love using it with a straight walking stick. It is the "jab" of stick strikes. Great video, I love seeing old training videos, some are better than others but all are a snapshot in time.

Very different from the training I received for the use of an ASP batton, which I suppose makes sense, since the ASP is a very different weapon. We were taught to maintain a two-handed grip and "strike for the offending limb," that is, whichever arm or leg of the target was closest to you, and/or the one most likely to injure you. Under no circumstances were blows to the head or neck permitted--that was considered deadly force, and if the situation called for deadly force, then it was assumed we'd have a gun rather than baton in hand. Probably a less versatile system than the one shown here, but it had the advantage of being much simpler, more intuitive, and actually less dangerous for the attacker. Ramming the end of baton into a person's chest or stomach is a good way to rupture something important, but broken wrists and cracked knees, while painful, are rarely fatal.

In 2013 we had about 400 applicants for one slot in my town because it was the first time a civil servants exam was even available in 9 years. The guy they hired was in my Company in Afghanistan. He was a weak scrawny undisciplined turd. But... His family was close with the lieutenant in IA doing the hiring. Now? They can't get people to test much less apply. Corrections officers, sheriff's deputies, and policy are recruiting like crazy because all the fat old guys are finally hanging it up. The cops won't investigate anything unless there's a body at room temperature. The local billboards show starting pay rates that are $4 higher than current employees with big bold lettering reading "NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY". Well... Good luck. I'm too old now.

"You don't want to hit the offender in the head" Five minutes later... "To the jaw, to the groin!" Granted a hard hit to the jaw won't cause brain damage or anything but once you go from "The head is off limits" to "OK nothing wrong with popping 'em in the jaw a few times" it isn't long until someone is out there cracking skulls. "I was going for his jaw and he moved". The PR-24 is a much better weapon. Shame most departments don't allow it anymore. You could actually block with it.

I occasionally have to deal with LAPD at my job and all of their nightsticks have had 90 percent of the paint (metal batons of course) "beaten" off. Like it looks like they've hit so many poor people that all the paint is gone. I mention this and they laugh like I said something super funny. That stick is a torture device first and foremost.
@seeingimages
@seeingimages 3 күн бұрын
You sound like a very prejudiced person. The paint only comes off because of years of carry that involve insertion of the baton into the holder on the utility belt and into the storage slot of the patrol car, followed by removal of the baton when answering a call for service. 🤦‍♂️🙄

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZfaq users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films!
