Do we truly comprehend how much of our time and attention is given to technology? In his talk, Dino Ambrosi reframes how we think about our relationships to devices, and shares his ideas on how to create healthy digital habits.
Dino Ambrosi, the founder of Project Reboot, is an expert at guiding teens and young adults to relationships with technology that empower them. While studying at UC Berkeley, he created a popular course called Becoming Tech Intentional which he taught to over 60 of his fellow students who reduced their screen time by an average of over 3 hours per day. After graduating in May, he embarked on a mission to spread the contents of his course to a broader audience. Through school assemblies, workshops, and consulting, he has worked with over 500 students and parents to raise awareness about the addictive potential of our devices, drive conversations around digital wellness, and deliver practical strategies to build healthy digital habits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I uninstalled all social media apps and bought 4 bicycles and now spend about 10 hours a week cycling to work, riding trails in the forest and exploring wherever my bike can take me. I met a wonderful woman who also loves crazy cycling adventures and we share so much great time together doing the thing we love to do. My mental and physical health has improved exponentially. I lost 20kg. I was promoted at work and bought a house and am now able to be there physically, financially and emotionally for my teenage children. I still look at screens, that's almost unavailable, but the time is much reduced. Freeing my mind from the virus of social media has given me my life back. Life's too short to not ride a bike every day.

Time is the subscription fee. I just calculated it for myself. There are 1,440 minutes in one day, and I’ve spent 56 of those minutes on Facebook alone today. That’s 4% of my day spent on Facebook. It’s 12:49PM, and to take this a bit further, I figured I’ve spent 120.5 minutes(8% of my day) on my phone as a whole, although I’m not sure if I should count Spotify(music while driving). Roughly 8% of my day has been lost to social media. I could be practicing my photography with my new camera, sketching, reading, playing with my pets, gardening, ANYTHING- in the end, all we want is more time, and we are spending(wasting..?)it on social media.

I had a bad internet addiction for 4 years. It started during the pandemic and I decided to put a full stop to it only at the end of last year. I went from topping my school, being one of the students teachers hoped would do well in entrance exams to colleges, public exams, to literally failing all subjects. This along with other personal issues, my academic topper identity crumbling down, I was broken. Took me a long time to completely stop social media, especially twitter use even though I knew the problem. And when I tried to sit and study again, I was not able to. It really pained and hurt me to maintain focus and concentrate on anything academica related, my speech became slurred, before the pandemic when I was doing amazing, I used to be able to think fast and answer in classes, calculate math in my head very quickly, I have won many prizes and awards, but after pandemic, it was very very hard and I became very slow. Cognitive abilities definitely took a hit and this was what that truly frightened me. Not being able to get back to my genius self. I knew ihad it in me. The potential. Because I had once been using it to a high level. I am slowly recovering now. Focusing is getting more and more easier as I force to sit myself down and study. Somedays it's very hard, I cry. But life has to keep going. Because of this I was not able to grt into my dream colleges, so I've taken another year to study for my entrance exam. And by addiction I meant: more than 16-18 hours per day of internet and social media almost every single day for FOUR DUCKING YEARS. So you can imagine the damage my brain had suffered. If you've read until here, I would be glad if you dropped a comment for me. Bcs this addiction took me away all the connections and friends in my life and I'm alone today. Though there are many life lessons I learnt because of the hard times, the negative impact is also very much and requires much healing. So it would be very helpful for me and heartwarming if someone can drop a comment for me. Thank you. 💛 I wrote all this so nobody would have to go through the same as me. I know I will turn out just fine, and why? Even much better than I was before my pandemic but still it's a very painful and lonely , loveless towards yourself journey. Take care. Use your time wisely for the things that truly matter to you. 💛

When I didn't use social media I was so connected with people and had actual strong reliable relationships. When i was sick, I had people physically come see me. But now all I get is an emoji and get well soon. Its awkward amd lonely this side.

I never liked social media, but this talk misses a point: my focus time is valued at 20 dollars per hour, but my relax time should never be valued in dollars, but in happiness achieved. I plan spending most of that relax time playing board games, computer games, sports, watching TV series, spending time with friends and family... Probably 50% or more of that will be "screen time", because the computer games part of it will take a big chunk of that, but I think that's totally fine, and I'm not doing anything I will regret. I think the problem is that people are doing this out of being distracted, instead of choosing it consciously, and that's problematic, but saying that you should value each hour of your free time 20 dollars is the best way to feel like a failure and burnout, or just waste your life chasing the hassle instead of building your future happiness.

Screen time doesn't bring happiness. Some momentary pleasure yes, but when it's over, we usually are frustrated with ourselves at how much time we spent, more than we intended...and yet, the dishes still need to be done.
@AsdrubaleRossi
@AsdrubaleRossi 24 күн бұрын
@@rebeccajacklin3976 when I stop playing games I don't feel frustrated with how much time I spent doing that. I feel recharged and ready to get things done. When something upsetting happens, I normally think about it for some time to see if I can find some solutions or learn something from it, and then use games to get distracted and not overthink. Maybe if instead of demonizing screen time we would just accept it, people wouldn't become so addicted to it, because it would lose the charm of a forbidden thing to turn to when feeling bad. It still takes discipline and we are bound to make mistakes some time, but most of the people around me who see games as a way to relax are much happier than those who see unproductive activities as a time waster, and end up getting stressed and getting less done instead of more.

@@iampakshaaljain Yes of course! I have tried many things, but it was alwasy difficult to improve past a certain point. I think removing what you don't need from your phone is good, but what I learned from a phychology video is that your environment always wins no matter your intentions over time. An analogy would be like even if you want to be warm and wear jackets, if you live in a freezer, you will eventually become cold. I find that it is similar with social media, and so for me the best thing to do was to set your environment the best you are set up for success. For example, when you don't need to use your phone, you can put it out of sight and reach, so you are no longer using will power to avoid it, or you can take the leap and sometimes go on with your day leaving your phone behind if you can do that. I found it the easiest way to become less addicted, and there are lots of things on your phone that you could transfer onto maybe like an tablet if you have one. But at first I felt so much fear going anywhere without my phone, but now I feel at peace and I don't think about my phone anymore which I love. Now I usually carry a notebook in my pocket most of the time instead most the times.
