TEDx Talks

9 жыл бұрын

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Social Media historian Allison Graham offers a witty and ironic view of a society that feels alone together despite the hundreds of virtual connections we have online. With a global population growing up via Facebook and Twitter and a perceptible shift in human interpersonal connections, the constant need for social self-validation permeates our daily existence. This talk shares the funny and revealing insights of a life lived online and how social media is used to connect and disconnect us.
A graduate of Southern Methodist University, Allison has worked all over the country and globe bringing the written word to life on the big screen.
Allison has worked for Artisan Entertainment, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, 20th Century Fox, Miramax and Dreamworks SKG as Assistant Director, Production Manager, and Producer working with such titans as Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Bay, Timur Bekmamvetov and Tim Burton.
She was one of the key business strategists behind The Blair Witch Franchise marketing campaigns, leading the team responsible for revolutionizing the way the Internet and film marketing were viewed.
Allison enjoys cooking from scratch, bicycle rides on flat terrain, conga lines and diving boards.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I am a high schooler who has deleted all my social media. I realized that my "friends" who would like and comment on my photos would never talk to me in real life. Whenever I came up to them they would always be on their phones, and, when they were not, they were complaining about how boring and sad their life is. The way that you are happy, in my opinion, is to maintain your own hobbies and have close friends whom you would trust with your life. When I was on social media, I realized that I had lost both of those aspects. I wouldn't focus on making myself happy. Instead, I would focus on seeing how I compared myself to others. I dont know how else to say this, but having that sort of aspect to life is stupid. There is nothing to be proud of when all you are doing is getting likes from fake friends. That doesn't make you happy, and it doesn't make others happy, either. I am optimistically hoping that, some day, these social media apps will die off so we can return to being like normal humans. Communicating. Working together. Making Friends. Things that used to seem so easy, but, now with social media as a distraction, have become much less so. Anxiety in high school is caused by social media, so the best thing you can do for yourself is get rid of it.

I deleted all my social media a week ago. My friend asked me: 'Why would you do that? How are you going to survive? Wow.. I literally survived like 16 years without it, why wouldn't I now? How can people be so obsessed about social media. It's not social media at all, it's just showing off to your so-called 'friends' how good and happy you are. I don't regret deleting my social media. I feel just fine and I feel like I have more free time. I spent over 8 HOURS a day just scrolling through my pages! It's insane how much time we spent on social media. I regret nothing, I'm even thinking of going back to a flip phone :)

Well done. I encourage you to go the whole hog and get rid of your phone completely. Just stick with a landline and an answering machine, like I do. If anyone wants to contact me, they can ring me at home, or if I'm out, they can leave a message. As we ALL did before 1987. I hate being at everyone's beck and call. I don't need to know every little detail of others' lives, and I don't want them knowing about what I do. I value my privacy and free time.

This is why I miss the 80's, and 90's before the internet, and social media became so mainstream. Most people back then had integrity, and respect for self, and each other. We also had no choice but to interact with each other. I still have a home phone with a built-in answering machine. I do have a cell phone, and a texting app on my tablet mostly for back-up. I am old school, and I hate texting. Some of the other women that I used to be friends with actually called, and had conversations over the phone. In person, it would somewhat be a totally different situation, and they would be on their cell phones. I would bring it to their attention that it was disrespectful, and rude, and they really didn't care. I'm glad that I am no longer their friend but, that wasn't the only reason why I stopped being their friend. I got invited to hang out in Boston with some people yesterday, and most of us were not on our electronic devices. I am somewhat guilty of doing certain things on Facebook. I try not to go on there like I used to, and when I do go on there is to play games. Real friends are people that/who are in your life in the real world. Not on social media. To a certain extent, the internet, and social media is more of a negative than a positive. Unfortunately.

@@teccash3507 Not true actually, excessive and misuse of social media is what disconnects people, not social media itself. I haven't lost a single friend and have provided great help and created greater more socially connected online communities. I support an Autism Community group, on this group we don't compete against each other, we share any ongoing issues and provide each other selfless service. Not all parents are familiar to the condition Autism so those of us Autistic are providing parents solutions to help their children by sharing our experiences. We laugh together, not laugh at one another. We're labelled as people with social deficits but somehow we're more socially connected than neurotypicals. So it doesn't disconnect us, people are disconnecting themselves by misusing it as show offs to make themselves feel better. That tells me these show off are actually living in misery, if they were happy they wouldn't feel the need to treat life like a competition.

The fact is, socializing is a part of our nature, humans are supposed to communicate that’s a part of who we are. Although when we do socialize we find people who are toxic to us, but this will happen to everyone so you can’t just be alone because you have ran into a few toxic people. Running into these people will just teach you lessons and better you, try to stay positive about everything and don’t be negative about lessons you have learned.

I liked the comment about people posting pics from parties that those viewing might not have been invited to. Worst for that is wedding pictures: they could so easily have uploaded them to a group for guests only, yet they post to their own wall- "Here's some snaps of our amazing wedding last week (useful if you weren't given permission to actually attend)". I imagine that causes some real sadness and feelings of exclusion because it's such an important event. It's either just so lazy to post them on your own wall, or, even worse, narcissistic. If people aren't close enough to invite to your wedding, why do you want them to see your photos?

It's their delusion that people will see that they are a family centered person. It all reflects the insecurities of the users. Inevitably. I always am real, not faking myself so I don't have social media because I would not survive there. People are dominated by their own subconscious there and I am self actualizing, working with my subconscious consciously. So... it's innefective for me. Faking myself just for the sake of trying to connect with someone is just too much waste of time while trying to work with myself and my subconscious which will be adding fear and though forms as images that I latter will have to dissolve anyways.

As a person who's never had a mobile phone ( thank God ! ) nor ever used social media, I can recommend you trying it, Kelby. That's how life was meant to be. How it actually WAS - for those of us old enough to remember it - like me. Mobiles and Facebook, Twitter e.t.c. were meant to be an OPTION to use, for fun or convenience, but users have allowed themselves to be convinced that these devices are now "essential" to their lives. That's simply not true. It's a deceitful illusion that they have constructed for themselves. I urge you to get rid of your phone, or if you can't bring yourself to do that because you've invested too much of your self esteem in it, then at least cut back the use of it severely. You'll be glad you did.

I think it is outstanding that you have stayed away from the koolaid. It really is a time waste. I have never really been one to post anything much and certainly nothing mean or controversial. After three short stints on Facebook, I am done and over it. It came out when I was in college and is nothing like it was when it started. I do not feel like it facilitates much good at all. I like my cell phone for my music, GPS, note pad and for actually talking. About once a day, I peak at Twitter for a silly escape into the lives of Hollywood, but that is about it. I do not see myself getting rid of my cell phone, but social media is over my head in such a significant way. I would not be lost without Twitter. I may shut that down too. On a separate note, I HATE REALITY TELEVISION AND EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR! LOL That is a conversation for another time. :)

I myself found it difficult to find close friends at this point, after having good friends 10 years back in another country. I agree with the speaker as she really shows the flaws of societal issues pertaining to social media in today’s society. Nowadays, people see it as a social norm to check their phones regularly and cause the real talking to cease. I too as well as Allison Graham, can sense the change in societal behaviour whereby we are not as closely knit to a person as much as before the times of smart phones. As she mentioned, the number of close friends have dropped in recent years and the reasons why are way too obvious to miss. I believe that every once in a while we should detach ourselves from social media and technology in general. Though it may not be an enormous issue right now, in the near future, it is going to be. Especially with teenagers taking one step forward in their lives and transferring the unsocial, social media habits to their children. 155 words, Gregory Goh, TB01

The first mobile phone dates back long before 2007. Twenty years earlier in fact, and was the size of a housebrick. Then they got smaller with more features, and the suckers started believing they HAD to have one, to the point where now they truly believe they "cant survive" without one. It's absolute nonsense of course, but they can't shake off this trance they've fallen into. I'm glad I didn't get sucked into the vortex by getting one. But I feel sorry for all those that have.

There is nothing more powerful than face to face interaction. Because technology is now the fundamental part of communicating i.e, texting on our cell phones , communicating via social media platforms, we fall into this doing this consistently everyday 7 days a week. From this we have the power of now not being responsive to messages which we may receive, or have the time to get back to, or simply to avoid a conversation with someone. Apart from family members, How many times do people actually pick up a phone to ask how a friend is, who you may not have spoke to for a while etc. I think we can fall into making a lack of effort sometimes in communicating , and in years to come loneliness and depression will be experienced more and more with people who are actually struggling with this non-verbal communication wave which we have in our everyday lives.

Even the greatest tools in the world/universe can be turned against us if we don't know how to use it.. It can rule us or we can rule it... I agree with Allison Graham that despite the name 'social' media, it actually makes us unsocial. We post things n social media, expecting friends to know what is happening in our lives instead of meeting and catching up. We hold cellphones more often than we hold hands and make friends that we have never met in real life. Basically, we live life behind screens. To worsen things, one never fails to pick up their cell phone in awkward situations instead of making the effort to talk and bond. Also, during gatherings, I reckon that people use their phones too. So much so that we spend time with our phones more than with people. Nevertheless, social media is not all bad, but we need to know how to balance between using social media and staying connected with face to face conversations. For a start, we can try keeping our phones away for an hour a day. 155 words, Bella Chong, CMM/TB01

I completely with what the speaker mentions on how social media has caused us to plug into the internet and unplug ourselves from the human touch. What was most important to me that was mention was when the speaker said “I think our lives will be better if we had hands to hold and not keys to click” which goes to show how disconnected the current generation is. Mobile devices and social media has evolved from a luxury to a necessity in day to day life. Social media is present even in schools when teachers use these materials to make their lessons more engaging because the only way to get students attention now is to use social media. People are now unable to put down their phones and has become a new top cause of car crashed. The media has not only made us take our hands away from each other but also the steering wheel which has costed many lives around the world. (164 Words, Tan FuQiang Gerald CMM/TB02)

This is a great "awareness lecture" and Allison does a great job. I really appreciate the thought regarding proper grammar. I've never understood abbreviating and actually creating NEW words to supplant grammatical accuracy. It doesn't put your intelligence in a positive light. Also, Facebook and other social networking sites/apps can DEFINITELY make you more connected with other people. It's HOW YOU USE the information provided by the people you are connected to that is important. (Remember....negativity spreads like cancer, and positivity spreads like wildflowers. ;-)

I agree with the view that social media is disconnecting us. With social media giving us a platform to express ourselves, idealistic expectations are sure to be set. We feel the need to adjust our lives according to the trends of Social Media. For example, as what Graham mentioned, we use shortened words to demonstrate our emotions. We use emojis to show how we feel and do not bother spending time face to face and have a proper conversation. Not only that, we also feel the need to show off the way we live our lives. We feel the need to document every little thing we do in our day to day basis and by doing so, constantly having our phones in front of our faces, trying to capture the moment, we lose the chance the experience the moment in real time, experience the beauty of the moment. We do things for social media, we do it for the retweets, the likes and this fuels our ego and somehow reflects our self-esteem. 172 words, Kyn Marie Tay Wei Jing, CMM/TB01

They are full of support and care for other people using their experiences to help parents with Autistic children. Like Allison is saying of people dividing, the Autistic Community is much more socially connected, they don't treat life as a competition, they ask for help as well as give help. Allison said about people not giving any bad news unlike Autistic people. I would say the table has been turned, NTs are now the ones with social deficits.

I don't like to generalize but the reality is that i'm seeing a lot more social incompetence and unfriendlieness on real life situations on these newer generations. For instance the last 3 interns we had in the company barely speaked to anyone, yet they were the World's most popular persons on social media. Another clear evidence is the streets of my neighbourhood that used to have a sworm of kids messing around and nowadays we hardly see anyone. Makes me feel proud of having been a 90s teen and not having any social media ever.

I agree with the speaker on how social media is making us unsocial, especially how it got even worse when smart phones were created and social media became even easier to access. I remember when I did not have such easy access to social media and when I actually bothered to try and get to know someone in real life than to stalk them off Instagram and never ever approach them at all. I had more time to do real leisure things that I enjoy such as drawing and making weird comics of my own. But, why go to such lengths when we have social media to entertain us? Why make friends when I never ever feel lonely with my social media with me? But the sad truth is, even though most of us know of its effects, we are afraid to do something about it because having social media with us is comforting and it gives us security of not being left out. 164 words, Wong Yee Fei, CMM TB04

Thank you for this talk. People are rarely talking about this subject in this way. You feel the pressure to stay connected in order to never miss anything - but you are. You are missing the `now`. I deleted my social media account because I wanted freedom of that sort of ... almost a obligation to follow or post or comment or arrange meetings, etc. What is the point? So there is no point for me, really. And now I feel very liberated.... If there are people in your life that exist beyond the `profile picture` you will be engaged in their lives forever. You just can`t have everyone in your life and you don`t need the social approval of the things that are happening to you personally - online. Still, sometimes I feel strange because I find it funny when my friends take pictures of everything and post it. Just like in that clip in the beginning. :)

I agree with the speaker that social media has not made us any more social. Social media has made us glued to our smartphones that some of us do not consider a human to human interaction to be as important. As seen from the talk, social media is deemed to be more important than the basic human necessities of air, food and water to a majority of people. This shows that people place a lot of importance on social media. There has to be a balance between the relationships forged on social media and offline. Sometimes we present ourselves differently on social media than offline, causing a disconnect between the person and others. People need to put lesser importance on social media and more on socialising face to face with others. As Allison Graham puts it, “I think we will all live life better if we had hands to hold rather than keys to click”. 154 words, Abdul Rahman Bin Azhari, CMM/TB04

I agree with the speaker; social media has made us very anti-social. In this day and age, we are constantly on social media. We are connected with many people around the world through social media but, we are not well connected to the people around us in real life. For example, when you are out with your friends or family for a meal, while waiting for the food to arrive, most of us would be using our phone scrolling through our feeds on social media rather than talking to our friend/family and bonding with them. And the moment when the food arrives, the first thing to do is take a picture of it to post in our social media platforms. At times it feels like the just world revolves around social media. Nearly everyone nowadays has at least one social media platform and it has become a such a norm to talk to people online rather than in real life to the point that some people feel awkward to talk face to face with another person in real life. I feel that social media is good to connect everyone, but too much of a good thing is bad. 198 words, Angel Makwana, CMM/TB03

I agree with what the speaker said. Social media was meant for us to be more social and meet new people but it seems as though it is doing the total opposite. While it is true that social media helps us to sometimes meet new people, it takes away the social aspect of meeting people in person. For some, when with other people, they are on their phones at least half the time. Social media has made us social, yes, but not social when we are in a social setting. It has become so integrated in our daily lives that we cannot live without it. Not just social media but our phones have become such a necessity to us that we feel that we can’t live without it. Also another point that the speaker brought up was that sometimes we use social media to talk about what we have done so much, that we automatically expect our friends and family to know about it without us directly telling them by seeing our updated Facebook status or latest Instagram picture. We expect others to be updated on our personal lives by looking at our social media profiles because that is how used to social media we are, our social media life becomes our life. 200 words Aaron CMM/TB03

This is true, I don't have a phone with an internet connection and I can't recall how many times in today's world where I'm having a conversation with someone, making a connection and then in the middle of my sentence they snap silent and I look up to see them gazing down into their phone tapping away, their attention on someone else on the other end of the screen. Same with a group of people sitting with each other, sooner or later nobody is talking but staring down at their phones as if they are hypnotised zombies. Its so bizarre and makes you feel like the loneliest person in the world sometimes as its so hard to make genuine connections now.....its creeping normality, but I am still always thinking....whats wrong with everyone? Do people not have any sensitivity towards how they make you feel when you do that to someone? plus I also think its quite rude? anyone agree?

@@philuntaysterlingsterling5046 yes it's become a social habit now that it is normalised by mass society. Being on your phone constantly or in the company of friends or others is now the new 'social etiquette' because everyone does it. I think it depends on how people want to live their life, I of course have social media but I would never be on my phone around others or not be present so use SM as a promotional tool or adventure sharing. I think people now just feel a need to share everything in their life and just on automatic to look at their phone when they feel the urge. It is quite sad to see this is the new etiquette of socialising with each other- but we can pick and choose our moments to go on SM in the day and I think now its just at the forefront of people's minds

I feel that Alison Graham brings up strong and interesting points. She talks about how we can’t live even an hour without our mobile phones, which is extremely true. In this day and age, our phones is something that helps us connect to others as well as keeps us entertained. However, because our phones makes us more sociable, it also makes us less sociable. Alison also brings up the idea that we like to paint a pretty picture of our lives on social media. However, I’d beg to differ. In this day and age of social media, people like to seem sad as it gives them attention. It’s only natural after all, when you see someone sad, your first instinct is to know why they feel this way, being nosy human beings. This is the only point that I feel she was incorrect. Other than that, I feel that her speech is very close to home, and would definitely make me re-think what I’m doing with my time from now on. 171 words, Renee Lim, CMM TB04

As well as for friends and family, when someone right in front of you take off his or her free time to meet with you, but you care more about someone on the other side of the phone. I believe it as disrespectful and not a great thing to continue doing. I would say always try to have conversation when we are around people or maybe we can be the one to bring people together in an interesting conversation. This way, we can get our friends and family's attention away from their phone.

I completely agree with the speaker. What struck me most was when she said that “we would all live life better if we had hands to hold rather than keys to click.” This just shows how disconnected everyone is with each other today. People like to believe that they’re connecting, socialising even, more online but it’s sadly the opposite. It’s just one person interacting with an interface. Rather than it being a luxury, mobile devices have become a daily necessity in peoples’ lives. She brought up the fact that texting while driving has become the number 1 cause of death in teens. Do most people know about this? I believe most people would think that the number 1 cause would instead be drinking and driving. This further magnifies how numb or even blind people are to their disconnection with the world. It is so sad to see people walking down the streets, at dinner with their loved ones, gatherings with friends, with their heads bowed furiously typing away at a screen, thinking that they’re actually fully engaging themselves with the real world. 182 words, Christine Labong, CMM/TB04

I cant deny that the more you spend so much time in social media the less you interact to people in person, no one cant stop this from continuing until the next generation it might be getting worse and worst, ok there is a point of sharing your moments to your love ones online is a must sometime as well as checking your current condition but isn't that right that it should be private post and not in public? People exposing their experiences in life, i can see now that hate was being created by unpredicted post an automatic unlock permission to capture things unexpectedly because you did not ask to see that but its already there it messages you to do the same thing even youre not in capable of then the effects is jealousy responding your mind to think that it is her/him time to experience that or he/she deserved it but the more you see it over and over again the more you will feel the depths of hatred because you are just completely stock there! One more thing you hit the button like very often but whatever type of post you do they ignored it all they want is your like and not theirs. That is really bullshit so from now on i ready to escape from this delusion of hypocritical world. The end.

I always feel like I have the strength to give it up, but every night I find myself watching a video to try and finish the undying addiction. The hard part is no one else will do the same, and I’m afraid I’ll feel isolated as ever, without talking to anyone else for days or weeks because it’s the “norm”.

Hi Allison, I'm currently studying my Master of Architecture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and am looking at designing a facility which can aid in reducing technology addiction. I am extremely interested in the issue of technology addiction in small children, often whom display signs and traits of drug addiction, i.e. aggressiveness when said device is taken away etc. What is your opinion on this, is internet addiction as severe in minors as I hypothesize? And what does this mean for the future? How will society function as a society that runs 24/7. Hope to hear from you.

Looking forward to buying a motorolla razr v3 to give me more nostalgia The internet is accessed at home for me, or at the office, or at the taxi or the limo... or the lincoln or bentley, the 737, my private jet, the boeing 747... but never on the sidewalk (Do you perceive how many people hit their faces on the street polls while looking at their phones?? It's hilarious!)

I agree with Allison Graham that social media makes us unsocial. Practically everywhere we go, you can spot people busily tapping away on their phones. I myself am guilty of doing so too. I think that as much as social media was created to connect people close to us as often and be updated with their daily activities.I cringe at the fact that people assume you know where they were and what they were doing because they updated their accounts on the different social media platforms which you follow. Social media definitely achieved their aim of wanting to connect people from all over the world and making it convenient for them to still be able to keep in contact no matter where they are. However, I feel like it has overachieved to the extent that people prefer to text instead of meeting up face to face to chat. Yes I do agree that social media allows us to connect with others so much more conveniently but even so there is something special about face to face talks and spending time with the person physically that social media will never be able to achieve. 193 words, Miyuki Goldarina Seah, CMM/TB03
