Of course, it's very difficult to explain the state of the Iberian peninsula before the muslim invasion in two minutes, but I'd still like to make a few ponits. I hope someone finds it interesting. The Visigothic Kingdom administration was everything but healthy. It was a complete mess, the monach had very little power and most kings died assasinated. King Wittiza was fighting a rebellion in the northern par of the kingdom (Septimania, now part of France) when he died. The nobles that were aiding him in the war(mainly from the Tarraconensis province, wich more or less corresponds to modern Catalonia and Aragon) elected Wittiza's son, Achila. The nobles in Baetica, wich were powerful and had a long history of opposing the monarchy, declared that election ilegal, because it had not been in Toledo with all the nobility present. They then elected Roderic and civil war started. Achila's side contacted with the muslims and asked them for help. But when the muslims arrived at the Peninsula it seems that Roderic and Achila had made a truce and decided to face the muslims together. However, when the visigoths faced the muslim army, Achila's side fleed the battlefield, leaving Roderic's forces alone. Many visigoths, seeing that the battle was lost, decided to flee too. Now, this is the Dark Ages we are talking about, so sources are few and not too great. Muslim sources tend to change the name of the christian characters they mention, and christian sources do the same with muslims. Christians also love to shove miracles and saints into every historical event they tell. Add to that the fact that some like to see in the visigothic kingdom the ancestor of modern Spain, and many historians approach the topic with the intention of delivering a certain political narrative (sometimes nationalistic, sometimes anti-nationalistic). Historians nowdays still disagree in a lot of things about this battle, so take everything you read with a grain of salt.

Thanks for this. I used "quite healthy" phrase, as kingslaying more-less ceased in middle 7th century. Maybe the Visigothic Kingdom should be described with more than two brief sentences, but my goal is too keep these vids reasonably short, so all I can provide is a quick overview. Often contradictory and unreliable sources made the script-writing quite a challenge, but it was very interesting to go through it.

I think Marcus Tullius Cicero sums it ut: “A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

@@dyndu2074 In the context of your comment, "Their holy books" are also holy books for the Christians (aka "the old testament"). The fact that you had to dig up events that happened 3000 years ago (that is if you believe they happened) attest to the weakness of your argument. Besides, mass killings were very common in old times and have occurred hundreds if not thousands of times since then, including in the modern era, which makes the singling out of Jews in this context, very hypocritical. you should be ashamed for making racial accusations, even more so If you are black as your picture shows. Blacks have been the focus of racism for centuries and still are in some places. "Don't throw stones if your house is made of glass." Btw, Jews don't celebrate mass killings, they celebrate their survival from them.

America needs to read this now. Trump and his party are the greatest traitors America has ever seen. And when our enemy's appear at our doorstep our 'Allies' [they used to be] will hold back just like Rodric's did and then shake their heads when we are gone. That is if we don't fall into Civil War first.

That's the big problem with that battle, the Muslims historians of the time didn't talk about it and the Chistian one overglorified it and ads miracles on top of it. Maibe the Battle of Navas de Tolosa, althouth centuries after, would be a better candidate for a follow up video.

When Pelagius (Pelayo) stopped the Moors at Covadonga, it was a basically platoon-sized group of Visigothic knights defending their mountain valley refuge against a Moorish raiding party. As the first successful resistance against the invaders, the Visigoths blew its size and significance out of proportion to increase its effect on morale. The Moors certainly didn't consider it a major defeat or turning point. The survival of the Visigothic realms in the north really had more to do with the difficult-to-conquer wooded mountain terrain, which caused the Moors to decide it wasn't worth the cost, and Charlemagne's insistence on a buffer zone (the Spanish March) between Muslim Spain and the Frankish Empire.

MdL6XD The most trustworthy accounts are the muslim chronicles. They say that the governor of Gijón sent a 1500 strong cavalry party to crush a minor rebellion of some 300 men in Asturias. If you know those mountains, you know that sending light cavalry is a staggeringly stupid idea. Pelagius and company rained arrows and rocks from above and that's about it.

@@th0r_0dinson If you lived in Spain, you would realize, that muslims here, tend to act less as muslim, every year they are here, especially if there are no other muslims around, and they can do it without fearing for their image. Their children are more laic than religious, and their grandchildren, are as spanish as if their where direct decendents from some visigothik king. Trust me, I have wittnesed it.

This video is in European Perspective. The Arab-Berber Army faced a much Greater disadvantage of Berber rebellion and a flank attack by the Berbers from the Aures. They were also decisively outnumbered. This is serious disparaging of Historical figures.

@ali bazzi Yeah, I have recently observed an anti-Islamic wave all around the world based on generalization and ignorance. I just object to History being used as a tool to sponsor this wave. I am all for History being studied objectively.

@ali bazzi The narrator not even once talks about the Arabs and Berbers and their trifles, He even pins a comment talking all about the problems the Visigoths faced after making an 8-minute long video on how the Arab/Berber victory was a pyrrhic one. I am just surprised that how this video doesn't have many dislikes.

It is strange, O owner of the channel, that when you talk about Muslims, you say that they came to plunder the region and also always say that their enemy was in a state of weakness, just to try to reduce the attractiveness of their victories!!

you do realize that there's no point in lying, the Visigoths were barely holding together from within. of course when the entirety of Spain falls to 12 000 lightly armored cavalry there's something going very wrong
