Sure it's arguable how many of them actually could fight, but they were sent on something that was always going to be a farce In contrast the Italians are in their home seas. It's insane anyone thought that was a good idea. Sailing boats had pretty much gotten to the point where ramming as a dedicated or primary function was pretty much totally outdated around the time cannons became a thing, it was done into the modern age as a secondary role or as an act of desperation or to exploit a sudden opportunity. Building a steam powered ram was just dumb, especially since early steam ships were still pretty slow and in some cases still slower then sailing ships. Making the short range assault ship your flagship is just insane

The hardest blow of the battle was delivered by Tegetoff only after the had ended: The Italian kingdom kept claiming to have sunk SMS Kaiser during the battle to save face. So Tegethoff threw an international dinnerparty onboard the Kaiser. He even Invited many officers of the Italian Navy (who declined to attend). To his protest Tegethoff was reprimanded for this rouge diplomacy. Also the relative overperformance of the austrians isn't fully suprising - attracting only men of passion since the actual glory and career was understood to be made in the army. As opposed the Italian side where navy positions were sought after as political springboards. Both from: Große Seeschlachten : Wendepunkte der Weltgeschichte von Salamis bis Skagerrak / Arne Karsten ; Olaf B. Rader , Munich, 2013

Tegetthoff was also supposed to be the name of a German Hipper class heavy cruiser. However since the Germans didn’t want to insult their Italian allies with a ship named after Tegetthoff they changed her name to Prinz Eugen. That’s how there was a German warship named after a French prince who fought for the Austrian army.

@snapdragon6601

I heard that before too but now I wonder if that was really true. I could understand it maybe if they were just pouring the lead shot down the barrel out of a container before using the ramrod to push it down, but it turns out that usually the cartridges were already made with the proper amount of gun powder and lead ball wrapped in paper that they would tear the end off with their teeth before pouring the powder down the barrel and then ramming the ball down the barrel with the ram rod. When thinking about the cartridges made like this, it seems like it would be very unlikely, no matter how nervous they might be while under fire, to ram multiple lead balls down the barrels without realizing it. The only other reason I could think of as to why someone might do that in a battle was if they were wanting to look busy in front of their officers during a battle but too afraid to move out from behind cover and expose themselves to enemy fire. 🤷
@supremecaffeine2633
@supremecaffeine2633 5 ай бұрын
@@snapdragon6601 It should also be noted that the rifles used needed to be cleaned at least twice every 40 rounds to prevent jamming. It was also mentioned that most of the cartridges were found to be intact when loaded, increasing the chances of jamming.

There's an suggestion of the historian Barbero that a possible "date", where we could say was the start of the italians, was at the defeat at Caporetto in WW1. But, in my limited knowledge, I would say that the real moment where tha population became italian was at the referendum of 1946, with the universal suffrage of men and women to decide whether they wanted to continue with the monarchy or a full democracy. I don't belive it was the decision to became democracy but the vote in its self, the fact that it was the first time women could vote. I don't know what is funnier, hearing how bad the Italians dodged up on their side of the battle or the vibing Persano clips. Always great to hear this silly stories of people having loose screws in their heads, especially those that aren't Russian focused.

They were hampered by geography in WW1, to get out of the Adriatic would be to fall directly into the arms of the Royal Navy, the French navy and the Italian navy all combined. But along the coasts of the Adriatic they called the shots. The KuK Navy harassed Italy throughout the whole war
@alessandroiorio6248
@alessandroiorio6248 4 ай бұрын
The Allied navies too were hampereed by the geography of the western Adriatic coast which is unsuitable for the construction of major ports. There were battleships only in Venice (which was very close to the front), and the other extreme Brìndisi (which was very far and just meant to bolster the Otranto barrage). The Kriegsmarine never called the shots, they were purely a fleet in being, and never harassed anyone with surface vessels in any meaningful way. The only exceptions being the day-one bombardment around Ancona (nice win for AH but irrelevant), and Horthy's attack on the Otranto barrage (again nice but just a small show). They instead lost three battleships and some other minor vessels. Their only relevant effort was the use of submarines which passed through the barrage, and the Allied ASW technology wasn't good enough to stop them anyway.
