In this video we’re taking a look at the battle of Midway, this lesson focuses on Nagumo's Dilemma during the battle of Midway
➡️ During the Battle of Midway on June the 4th to the 7th 1942 a lot of mistakes were made by both the Imperial Japanese Navy and the US Navy. One factor that scholars often regard as a defining moment and rationale for the defeat of the Japanese at this battle is notoriously known as "Nagumo's Dilemma".
➡️ Vice Admiral Chūichi Nagumo gets an awful amount of disdain during this battle, so why is that? What could he have done differently during the battle of Midway? How did all of this effect Japanese history?
As one of the contributing factors of the Pacific War, we’ll be exploring how the battle of Midway effected the Pacific War.

I’d love to hear more about; what happened to the Burmese army during ww2? Why didnt japan focus on invading Australia instead of its attack on Pearl Harbor? What kind of military infrastructure was there, if any, at Hiroshima or Nagasaki? Why don’t more people understand that the Russian invasion of Manchuria was more influencing upon Japanese sentiment of surrender, than the atomic bombings? Do you have any reason why the Japanese military custom, during ww2, of using so called “comfort women” is not taught much in US education systems? Lol that’s enough from me

@@thethreeedgedsword7253 Haha, I plan on tackling the Asia Pacific War 1937-1945 "day to day" so everything you mentioned would be covered, which will take an eternity (much like the Great War Channel). Japan did not focus on invading Australia because the Japanese Army could not even handle eastern China (There was people in Japan who pushed for an Australian invasion). Australia was far too large a landmass with a military capable of defending it. Funny enough the allies took it as a real threat and made a "defense line" above Australia. As for the surrendering because of the invasion of Manchuria, that completely has to do with America's narrative on justifying the bombs AND a joint effort between US/Japan to create a postwar narrative to follow this. The real reason the Japanese surrendered at the time was indeed the Manchurian invasion and there is a lot of written primary sources on this. As for comfort women (I am Canadian by the way, but our education system is practically the same)....even in Japan its a hush hush topic, you hear the most about it obviously in South Korea. Why the US education system might not talk about might be a political issue. Boy lot to say here XD! Also as far as military infrastructure is concerned with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Hiroshima was not the first target (Tokyo was, but it was fire bombed to hell already), Nagasaki is an entire other story with a LOT of controversy. A lot of evidence supports the idea the bomb on Nagasaki was done simply as a test to see the effect of the bomb on certain geographical terrain and had nothing to do with any military threat.

@@ThePacificWarChannel trust me, I’m setting time aside in my life to watch your videos, so I’m excited that you’ll cover all that stuff in more detail. Agreeing with you on the atomic bomb and comfort women issue. There’s a Japanese man who witnessed and survived both blasts. Story goes is that he was telling his bosses, at Mitsubishi, that he saw the single bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The boss said, something to the effect of “you’re an engineer, do the math. What kind of bomb can destroy an entire city.” At that moment the room lit up with the flash of the second atomic bomb exploding. That dude died in 2010 I think. I’m glad you’re going to cover the invasion of Burma. At the beginning of the war they had 4 million troops... Very excited to hear about Chinese involvement in the war. Seriously I think it’s one of the most underrated roles I. The pacific theater. Hell, I’d argue that American military success would be in high question if the Chinese didn’t do what they did. I think the Us mainly dealt with the Japanese navy, we barely dealt with the Japanese army. Is that generally correct?

No offense here, but Shattered Sword is a mixed bag. The major revelation which the authors pitch is false, and their primary source- Senshi Sosho, or what they call the "Official Japanese History"- is not an official history at all. They leave out significant statements from Japanese officers and fail to mention that Senshi Sosho primarily represents the view of Japanese veterans- and not the Japanese government. Just sayin. Cheers...

As I remember, splitting the carriers to AK was part of Yamamoto's plan. Nagumo had no say in it.
@thethreeedgedsword7253
@thethreeedgedsword7253 3 жыл бұрын
Loyalty, obeying orders, these are far higher in priority than quick thinking and individual intelligence; in the Empire of the sun. Nagumo was hamstrung by his own military doctrines. Would have been too easy to have every fighter and bomber get in the air for Air defense, and have the second wave land and refit. From there he continues to chew up US Air Force peace meal attacks, eventually gaining air superiority. From there he could postpone midway, and focus on hunting Us aircraft carriers. The first wave would have let Nagumo know that midway was prepared and didn’t have any planes on it. The people on the island were sitting ducks and a NON priority, compared to Us aircraft carriers. Had Nagumo learned that midway was prepared, I think he would have changed his course of action. Also should have left the Aleutian Islands alone. Hindsight being 20/20, of course. Great video! Thank you!!

@@peteroconnell6964 You know another KZfaqr tackled specifically the Hiryu counter attack recently, but your question makes for an interesting point. The Midway invasion force had the Zuihō CVL which should have seen action (it survived Midway), Yamamoto's main force had carriers, such as the Hōshō CVE and some lights like Chiyoda & Nisshin that all survived Midway, but obviously as you already stated for the First Fleet it was Radio silence and distance that relegated them to secondary roles.

Read 'Shattered Sword' for an in-depth explanation as to why the Japanese were operationally and tactically inflexible due to their rigid doctrine. In other words those planes on the other carriers would never even be considered to 'swap in'.

I have another question that baffles me. I’m having a hard time finding a specific source to read, so maybe you can help. Where the hell were the japanese submarines during all this? I know there were mini subs used against Kure island. But japan had over 100 submarines in its navy by this point. I think they had a total of 170 at the end of the war. Total built, not total that survived the way.
@ThePacificWarChannel
@ThePacificWarChannel 3 жыл бұрын
The book: Shattered Sword: the untold story of the battle of midway, would be your best bet on a good lengthy answer. IJN Sub's were present though, they refueled aircraft, scouted the American forces and there was an expeditionary force of Subs that just missed the US task forces going by. Yorktown was hit by a few torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. The reason you don't hear about it much is because of the legendary aircraft battle that occurred. Everything else took a backseat for the lime light haha.

Were the bombs designed for ground targets completely ineffective against the US ships? What would've happened if Nagumo launched an attack to the US carriers with some of the planes carrying the wrong ammo instead of changing weapons again?
@ThePacificWarChannel
@ThePacificWarChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question because in fact, Nagumo had at one point during the Dilemma the opportunity to throw some Kates (torpedo bombers) who had land based bombs armed at the enemy. HE bombs are of course not as effective as armor piercing, but it arguably would have been the better decision to toss them as a piecemeal rather than rearm and wait to launch a full wave.
@technovelo
@technovelo Жыл бұрын
@@ThePacificWarChannel I think sending the reserve aircraft, however armed, would have been the better choice, but Nagumo had to worry about when the next attack might occur, the B-26 had to have rattled him, and there was also the Japanese doctrine of decisive victory that called for one massive attack. And hindsight is 20/20.
@juhorebejh9563
@juhorebejh9563 3 ай бұрын
For me, this was Nagumo's biggest mistake. The attack should have been carried out with demolition bombs, even though they were not armor-piercing bombs, no aircraft carrier deck could withstand the force of these explosions. The aircraft carrier would not sink, but it would not be able to operate its aircraft either, as the main deck would be destroyed.

I took two semesters of Chinese history and the First Opium War went into much more detail than what I learned. The whole theme about dealing with China at that time was that the leaders of China were extremely reluctant to modernize anything. One the subject of Midway, I cringed when I saw how Nagumo handled his warplanes at Midway. The allies had made enough drastic mistakes to that point, so I guess it was Japan's time to make a few bad mistakes.

In 1935 the US population was twice that of Japan. The US GDP/capita was nine times that of Japan. So Japan went to war against an enemy that could outproduce them by a factor of 18 to 1. On top of the wars in China. Vietnam. Philippines. Etc. The biggest case of biting off more than you can chew in history.
@deb5932
@deb5932 Жыл бұрын
@@TomFynn Japan had limited resources that we all know but their biggest assets are they are very much industrious. Japanese men in the army were very much motivated by their emperor. European colonized Asia long ago and they were creating hindrances to Japan for expansion in Asia, so they looked towards Pacific to fulfill their achievements. In the Pacific their biggest threat was American presence which became a blister on the wound. For centuries Japan had made tremendous advancement in Engineering and technology but colonization in Asia had put obstacles in their trade and commerce with Asian countries. They also needed raw materials for their industrial expansion which they would get from Asian countries. So they attacked Asian countries which were already colonized by European countries. They knew very well it's difficult to win a war against USA because USA is a big country with industrial outputs more than Japan. If the war lasted for short period then Japan would win but the war lasted for long period which led to Japanese defeat. Moreover Hitler's policy for attacking Soviet Union was also responsible for the continuation of war for longer period which ultimately led to the defeat of German forces and Japan the then ally of Germany was also affected. If Germany didn't invade Soviet Union then there was every possible chance of Japan to win the war against USA.
@TomFynn
@TomFynn Жыл бұрын
@@deb5932 No, there was no way that the war against the US would have lasted only a short time. The Americans, for all their faults, have a firm sense of fair-play. And the underhand (and embarrassing) attack on Pearl in Dec '41 meant that there would be no negotiated peace (as the Japanese had hoped and was pretty much their MO ever since the first Sino-Japanese War.). The man in the street would not have allowed it and FDR deliberately decided for unconditional surrender after the lessons of Versailles. Also, Hitlers invasion of Russia in Jun '41 was one of the major factors why Japan thought they'd have an opportunity for more aggression. Without this invasion, they would have always had to keep a weather eye on Russia attacking in Manchuria. No nan-shin-ron would have been possible.
@deb5932
@deb5932 Жыл бұрын
@@TomFynn I know United States had industrial bases more than that of Japan. Why Japan attacked Pearl Harbour is another topic to be discussed later on. US Navy had harboured more battle ships, Cruisers, destroyers, Cruisers in Hawaii which Japan thought that during their invasions of South East Asia, those battle ships, Cruisers, aircraft carriers would be used by America against them, so they decided to give a solid blow to US Navy. Unfortunately to Japan, on 7th December, 1941 all the aircraft carriers of US were out in Pacific for routine exercise and those aircraft carriers proved to be essential weapons of US against Japan later on.
