On October 27, 1942, two battered fleets sailed away from the Santa Cruz Islands. The US Navy had suffered the loss of 262 men killed in action or lost at sea. One carrier, USS Hornet, had gone to the bottom of the South Pacific. After Santa Cruz, the Japanese Navy had considered pursuing the retreating Americans, but once their admirals took stock of the situation, they deemed that decision unwise. Although the Japanese fleet had not had any ships sunk, they did have several damaged and had lost twice as many men as the Americans. Who won the Battle of Santa Cruz, and what was the battle's importance in the Pacific Theater of World War II? Find out in this video, the final installment of our 7-part series about the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.
All videos are written, directed, and produced by staff and volunteers at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

This was a turning point and Nagumo knew what would be coming. This was a win but not for Japan. He was right about that the Japanese had to win every battle and crush the US, however, this was unrealistic. After this point the war was lost. Greatly appreciate this series.

Great series on the Battle of Santa Cruz! Many of the other carrier battles get the attention but this one was very important to keep the IJN fast carriers out of action for almost a year while eliminating many of their aircraft and experience pilots.

Thank you for this clearly presented series on a very under-appreciated battle. Santa Cruz established the pattern of what was to come in the subsequent year: a war of attrition in the Solomons that would whittle down Japanese naval assets and bleed their naval aviation white. This type of war is what the Japanese knew from the very beginning that they couldn’t win and had to avoid at all costs. While US forces grew ever stronger, Japan was simply unable to replace losses in men and materiel.

By any rational standard of what constitutes a battle, the Japanese achieved a tactical victory at Santa Cruz, although a costly and valueless one. Strategically, they suffered a clear defeat.

Thankyou for such an informative, engaging and thought provoking series on Santa Cruz; a battle I had no knowledge of previously. I look forward to your next series.

This is another well done series of videos, this time focused on the lesser known battle at Santa Cruz. This is the 3rd series from the Naval Museum that I have viewed and I have learned details of each battle I did not previously know. I appreciated the conclusion that talked about the winner and loser from the perspective of both the Japanize and the Americans. I think there was perhaps more of the voice actors than necessary but on the other hand you could have included the views of one of the marines after the navy had left them to fend on their own.

Maybe it wasnt all that. However, the elimination of a significant portion of the air wings of multiple carriers effectively pulled the fangs of carrier aviation for the ballance of the war. It became the template to destroy the japanese navy and its power for the ballance of the war. An aircraft carrier with no planes is just a huge target...

To borrow from Churchill, the Battle of Santa Cruz was "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." of the IJN. My Grandfather was a Hornet survivor and he always told me "We held Guadalcanal, and that was our objective", so I'd say it was a Naval Victory (narrowly, but a victory nonetheless).

I always thought that battle was Japan's loss because they couldn't retake Guadalcanal.

I'm so glad you enjoy our video series! We have several more, too--just in case you haven't seen them all, I'm including a link to all of our playlists here (we've done Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, V-J Day, and Midway in addition to Santa Cruz): www.youtube.com/@HRNavalMuseum/playlists I'm not sure which series we'll make next--either profiles of World War II aces, or perhaps Guadalcanal. We're still deciding! It takes us a long time to finish a series since it's sort of a side job that we do in addition to everything else. Thanks so much for watching!

The Battle of Santa Cruz occurred less than one year after Peal Harbor. By that time, the USA was producing naval assets at a tremendous rate. Yet, few navy assets had been delivered to the war effort in the Pacific before this battle. Even the torpedoes for the subs still did not work well. Considering the overwhelming strength and experience of the IJN, the brave US fleet did at least an OK job, perhaps to be considered even a "good job". The US met its immediate military objectives during and after this battle. This is what counted most towards final victory.

Every engagement was a loss for Japan since they had limited industrial capacity to replace any losses while the US was ramping up capacity all the way to the end. They never stood a chance of winning unless the US gave up. The only good that came from Japan's decision to bomb Pearl Harbor was the total defeat of Hitler's NAZI Germany. I do understand how much I owe to the persons who fought for the side of freedom. Thank you
