There's something about the artstyle of your maps and characters that just brings me warm feelings. Probably because you were the first historical battle channel I started following on KZfaq so your content is just instant dopamine. Just goes to show that your quality has never dwindled!

It's interesting in a way how Romans were so smart about so many practical and insititutional things but were never able to implement systems of stable transfer of power in the post-republic era.

@@current9300 In fact, they created such a system. It was called the Republic, "res publica", the things of the people. These quarrels existed not during the Republic, but during the Empire. After you have read some books about the late period of the republican Rome, from the Social wars on, try to find some similarities with the events happening at the USA and Brazil, where magnates (magnus means great in Latin, but was a sign of superb when one bestowed that name to himself, like Pompeius Magnus) aim to seize the Republic for their own benefit.

Great to have you back! Eugenius went bye bye and Arbogast checked out. What would have happened had Theodosius lived and ruled the empire for another decade or two? Really interesting thoughts. Cool thing about this battle is how diverse and mechanized both sides were in their makeup. Theodosius army being composed of so many groups reminds me of the Punic Wars, where great armies had numerous people's/mercenaries holding varying roles.

Hm, the battle, in fact, accelerated the fall of Western Rome Empire. It's mobile field armies were never able to recover. Only twelve years later the Rhine border defence collapsed and Britain was abandoned. Only men like Stilicho and Flavius Aetius delayed an much faster end of Western Rome.

@@mikeschlau4501 But if not for this battle, the war would have protracted even more resources over a larger period. A single battle, while costly, is better than an still contested despute.

Late Roman history is just sad with its constant petty civil wars. Especially when you learn of earlier history, when even when struck with disaster after disaster, they were able to best enemies threatening their very existence, e.g., the Senones and the Carthaginians.

As a recommendation, I'd suggest an episode about the 'Slag bij Nieuwpoort' (Battle of Nieuwpoort) in the Netherlands anno 1600. Background: This battle was during the Dutch Resistance (formally known as the 80 Year Old War), in which the Dietsers (now Dutch people) fought a war which began on 1568, and lasted until 1648, with a 12 year period of peace in between. The Dutch finally seceded from the Spanish king in 1568, forcing the Holy Roman Empire to acknowledge de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden as a sovereign state. The Slag Bij Nieuwpoort began, when the Verenigde Nederlanden tried to turn the tide of the war, by being more aggressive towards the Spaniards. This idea came from Regentes Johan van Oldenbarneveldt, member of the Staten-Generaal (basically the Dutch government at the time). They wanted to attack the coastal city of Duinkerke, deep in enemies territory. An army of 9.000 soldiers, 2500 cavalry units, 6 cannons and provisions was carried over sea in about 1300 ships, lead by stadtholder Maurits of Oranje. He was the son of Willem van Oranje, a famous hero in the Netherlands who was shot dead 16 years prior. Once the army of Maurits was on land, it had great difficulty advancing. They had small victories, but the march itself was painfully slow and tedious due to supply issues (there were only small villages which were sparsely populated). It didn't help that they were in enemy territory, so the local populace wasn't very friendly towards the army. Lastly, the small amount of roads weren't built for such a massive army, halting the advancement even more. On July 1th, south of Oostende, Maurits was fed up bumbling about on the roads and marshes, and decided to march further on the beaches. This advancement of a giant army marching in enemy territory, was of course noticed by the enemy. Albrecht van Oostenrijk, governor of the Spanish part of the Netherlands, was already amassing an army to combat Maurits van Oranje from all around the Spanish Netherlands. It's said that some units marched 40km a day, to cut off the Dutch army. Albrecht was able to amass 6.000 troops, 1200 cavalry and 8 cannons. On the night of july 1th, Maurits had received word that the city of Oldenburg was retaken by the Spaniards. Fearing that his army might be surrounded, he sent out a small army to halt the advancement of the oncoming Spanish army, not knowing the massive force that Albrecht was leading. The Dutch soldiers weren't a match against the Spaniards and either died, or fled to the sea or to save areas under control by Maurits. Thanks to Albrecht not immediately attacking Maurits, rather advancing more carefully, Maurits had the time to tactically place his army on the beach and the dunes. He was hoping that the loose sand on the beach would slow down any charges made by Albrecht, which would put Maurits in a good, defensive position. Not only that: Maurits made sure that Albrecht's forces were facing the sun, making sure that the enemy army was blinded by the bright sun that day, and also battling the strong headwind, blowing sand in the faces of the Spanish soldiers. This would work out brilliantly for Maurits. The Battle: The Slag om Nieuwpoort began juli 2th, during the afternoon. Maurit's cavalry charged the Spanish army, but didn't succeed, as the Spaniards drove back the cavalry, which caused panic in the backline of Maurit's army, because the supply carts were about to fall into enemies hands. The Spanish army became overconfident, driving back the Dutch forces in the dunes. This brash counterattack cost a lot of energy for the Spanish army, as they had to plough through the loose sand which swept in their eyes, while being blinded by the sun. With the Spanish army on the brink of being exhausted, Maurit's decided to perform a counter attack with his remaining cavalry. This attack succeeded, routing the Spanish soldiers. This brought panic to the Spanish footsoldiers, while calming the nerves of the Dutch soldiers. During this Dutch cavalry charge, Albrecht van Oostenrijk got wounded and had to leave the battlefield. This marked the battle as victorious for Maurits van Oranje. This victory turned out to be a Phyrric one, as Maurits wasn't able to conquer the city of Duinkerke. Aside from a victory for the Republic and showing a sign of Maurit's tactical genius, it didn't amount to much aside from losing a thousand soldiers on the beach. Johan van Oldenbarneveldt was angry at Maurits for failing to take Duinkerke and their relationship worsened. In 1619, Maurits was granted dictatorial authorization, basically making him the head of the army and giving him a carte blanche to act, as the Republiek was losing the war against the Spaniards. He had Johan van Oldenbarneveldt killed due to treason, which marked the end of the rule of the Regenten in de Republiek, and marked the age of the Stadhouders.
