The Yamashiro should have been scrapped in the 1930s. She was an experimental and peculiar piece of naval technology, born from a volatile era in maritime development which had no place in the battlefields of World War 2.
However, an unexpected chain of events kept her and her World War 1-era sister ships from the scrapyard. Instead, it thrust them into the Pacific theater of the war’s decisive closing stages. In a last-ditch effort to change the outcome, Japan sent out these aging warriors in a bid for survival.
This set the stage for a dramatic and fierce confrontation in the Surigao Strait. The Yamashiro and her sister ship Fuso faced off against the American battleships California, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania-vessels resurrected from the depths of Pearl Harbor.
In the predawn darkness of October 25, 1944, the seas churned as the last battleship-to-battleship clash erupted. Outgunned and outclassed, the Yamashiro and her crew were prepared to fight to their last breath and meet their fate with honor.
The American fleet attempted a devastating naval tactic known as “Crossing the T.” The battle’s outcome and the honor of the valiant Yamashiro were entangled in this daring move, which the Americans had not effectively used since 1898.

My grandfather's ship, the USS Killen, torpedoed her while he watched from a 40mm Bofors mount. Told me it was awful being shot at by a battleship.

When one considers how the Yamashiro had no chance to win and how outclassed it was, the old battleship actually fought pretty well. It not only took a ridicluous amount of punishment-far more then what her sister ship, Fuso, did-but her aim was respectable as well.

Fusō 100% took more damage from multiple bombs from aircraft flown off Enterprise and multiple torps from 2 separate destroyer attacks. The bombs that hit Fusō caused significant damage, one of which hit below decks hitting her 2nd magazine. Three American destroyers launched torpedoes at 03:00 that morning, hitting Fusō at 03:08 and forcing her to fall out of formation the issue here is that we don't know how many hit, but this was the first salvo fired at her. Around 03:11, the destroyers Monssen and Killen fired their torpedoes, one or two of which hit Fusō amidships. The resulting damage temporarily slowed the ship down, gave her a list to port, and forced the flooding of the magazines for the two aft turrets. She would then sink. But, who knows how many torps hit in the first run. She was already slow and easier to hit with bombs from the aircraft. Yamashiro was also attacked by aircraft, but very minimal damage. Around 20 sailors on Yamashiro were killed by strafing and rocket attacks, and the ship listed by almost 15 degrees after a bomb's near miss damaged the hull and flooded the starboard bilge, until counter-flooding in the port bilge righted the ship. If we actually take a look at the USA ships that fired, we will see that only a couple shells were needed to take her down. It was the fire that claimed her, which unsurprisingly with her crew manning every gun going shooting at all targets around them trying to save the other ships in formation, fire control teams would have been severely limited. Six battleships formed a battle line; the Pearl Harbor veteran West Virginia was the first to open fire a minute later, scoring at least one hit with 16-inch (410 mm) shells in the first 20,800-meter (22,700 yd) salvo, followed by Tennessee and California. Hampered by older radar equipment, Maryland joined the fight late, Pennsylvania never fired, and Mississippi managed to fire exactly one salvo-the last of the engagement. The Australian heavy cruiser HMAS Shropshire also had radar problems and did not begin firing until 03:56. The first rounds hit the forecastle and pagoda mast, and soon, the entire battleship appeared to be ablaze. USS West Virginia with her first salvo was the one that got hits with her 16" and were the ones that doomed her to fire. Literally 04:00 Yamashiro turned to get her 4 main guns in on the action, 4 minutes later she was doomed at 04:04. Fusō 100% suffered more damage, in fact Fusō sinking was the perfect demonstration of how deadly destroyers are and how deadly aircraft are, which everyone learned fast aircraft were the new super weapon making BB obsolete.

The American bbs present where almost as out dated as yamashiro and fuso. The American standerds were built around the same time as the fuso class. There direct American equivalent being the Pennsylvanias. The American standerds (including the Pennsylvanias) were laid down all through ww1 and Immediate post war, till the Washington and London

@@robertstone9988 Except they were massivly upgraded after Pearl Harbor to be roughly comparible to modern ones in terms of armor protection, radar, AA firepower, and whatever else possible. (Except for speed, which was impossible.) Yeah, they were dated, but they were still far more useful then those of Japan.

@@rhedosaurus2251 they were more modernized than the poor yamashiro and fuso but they were still 2nd line older ships that were not even close to the capability of the new fast battle ships like the Washington, NC, South Dakota, Alabama, New Jersey and Iowa. Nore would they stand up to any modern battle ships of other nations. Yamato would have crushed even 2 or 3 standerds at one time. I thank a Bismarck or sharnhorst would have given a stander a run for her money. Modernized or not. That's why the standerds were still used mostly for shore bombardment and escort duties in the north sea. The Colorados and the Tennessees were the best and newest of the standerds and equivalent to a nagato or if you compare it to other allies ships the hood or nel/rods.

@@robertstone9988 I didn't say that they were perfect. Nor do I think they would have stood a chance against Yammy, at least unless you had 5-6 of them. But they still had a fairly heavy amount of AA firepower and could take a kamikaze hit better then most ships. IIRC, Maryland got hit by an Okha manned kamikaze rocket. Besides another battleship, what other US naval warship could survive that?

Fuso is my favorite battle ship of all time. I like lots of turrets, i like pagoda mast, i like casement guns. She had them all. And fuso died a samurai's death.

Strong book recommendation, Anthony Tully's "The Battle of Surigao Strait". Yamashiro was also damaged by destroyer torpedoes prior to USN battleships and cruisers opening fire.

USS Pennsylvania (BB38), which was not on Battleship Row during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941, but, rather, in drydock some distance away from Ford Island, received only minimal damage during the infamous attack. It is therefore inaccurate to include the Pennsylvania among those American battleships “resurrected from the waters of Pearl Harbor.” BB-38 was not sunk, nor seriously damaged even. Its having been put into drydock for repairs served it well on Dec 7, 1941.

Wrong. Pennsylvania was indeed damaged in the attack. Also she was not modernized and contributed little to the battle. The hits the killed Yamashiro came from West Virginia, California, and Tennessee-all fully modernized with radar-directed big guns.

WRT Treaty compliance, the IJN demilitarized the Kawachi-class Settsu (Kawachi had sunk due to a magazine explosion in 1918) and the Kongo-class Hiei. Settsu was used for training, as was Hiei until she was restored and upgraded. Before Yamato came into commission the IJN had the 4 uprated Kongos, the 2 Fusos, the 2 Ises, and the 2 Nagatos. The Fusos and Ises did really become obsolescent until it became clear that the ne capital ship was aircraft carriers, which steamed much faster, and the 2 Nagatos were marginal, not fast enough to keep up at full speed, but almost.

The only problem with the Japanese navy is they wud of never been at the pinnacle of naval developments & ahead of the game as what ppl dont seem understand up until post ww1 when the Japanese fell out with Britain 90% of all the major war ships of Japan was built in Britain & they only had the ability to built low tonnage ships etc until they made the change to build facilities to do so & still never the capacity to out produce anyone

At 05:29 that must be Yokosuka because that big crane was still there but no longer used and the shops behind it were still used and very active. That pier is where the Kitty Hawk was always moored at. I was stationed at Yokosuka from 2000-2003

While Fuso was the first Dreadnought-type battleship constructed by Japan, Japan had previously built 3 of the 4 Kongo class battle cruisers, similar in scale and degree of design challenge.

It's funny that the USA acts like it was a hard bitter fight naval wise against the Japanese. In reality, the British, with their gifts thanks to operation tizard, set it to ultra easy mode for the USA. The only thing that was tough was the island invasions, which some didn't even need to happen. Just gave the Japanese an easier death while losing a ridiculous amount of men. USA, during Pearl, went from fighting an equal adversary to fighting a one-armed blind man. The Japanese relied on Dye to range shots in. Compared to the USA that relied on British technology that did everything for them with their fire systems. Literally playing battleships with aim assist on lmfao. The Japanese naval leaders were certainly fearless, going in with manual fire against multiple assist with guns set up across the T.
