The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I saw them live on their 50 year anniversary tour on September 6, 2012 in Perth, Australia. They played a 3 hour concert with a break in the middle. Missing were Dennis Wilson (drummer) and Carl Wilson (guitar and vocals) who are both sadly deceased. The other 3 were there along with David Marks plus Bruce Johnston who joined the band at a later time in their history. There were many other fine musicians on the stage that night supporting them. They put on a great show and I was happy to be there at an historic time in popular music history.

And how! It's insane how much music young people were being bombarded with back then. So much so that 50 years on, we're still finding overlooked gems from that era that may never have had the luxury of national distribution or syndicated radio play. I still stand by my comment that the WORST of yesteryear is still BETTER than the Best of Today.

When I see these Ed Sullivan clips, I always think of watching the show with my Grandparents every Sunday... They had a BIG Zenith console TV in the front room.... Grandad sat in his recliner on one side, grandma sat in her green cushy chair on the other side, and I usually laid on the floor in between them.... Really takes me back to a simpler time...(for me, anyway... Ha)

I agree, & quite different from the others!!!❤️ It was evident from the first videos &/or clips of concerts that Mike liked attention, esp from the women!! Lol 😂. (anyone whose been married 9 times with that amt of kids, or maybe more by now, is excessive!!) But, guess he’s made enough $$ to pay for them!! Except for him waving to the audience, his clapping his hands & dancing around on stage just seemed natural for someone who didn’t play an instrument!!! His voice has always been an asset to the band, or it seems the Wilson Bros. would’ve tried to oust him from the BBs altogether!! But, he WAS family…. & always looked neat on stage, even with his many hats!!! With so much going on “on stage” he seemed to always be front & center as the frontman!! Lol. The video of “Rock & Roll Music” is fabulous with Mike in his glittery gold jacket dancing all around without missing a word!!! My next fave video is “Do It Again” on their 2nd appearance on Ed Sullivan, with all 5 in white suits, one of few appearances of Mike with his intense blue eyes shining & hair combed over & no hat!! Sooo, it goes without saying that at times he could probably get on someone’s last nerve….but he’s about 76 now in 2022 & still touring!!! The band lost a lot when Dennis drown & later when Carl got sick. However, with Brian, Al, Bruce, Marks, & Mike + many other musicians still alive & kicking, most are still touring, recording, & making great music!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😎😎😎😎😎💕💕💕

This came out in the summer of 1968. It was a hit, and the timing of it was unique. Their popularity in the U.S. had gone down in the psychedelic, San Francisco-based era...(although their popularity continued unabated in Europe and other parts of the world). But with their popularity being at a low point in the U.S., Brian was still able to write and record an incredibly vibrant, exciting and sexy record, put it out there and have it be a huge radio favorite in the U.S. Really, not bad.

The sad part of their reduced popularity was that it allowed top-40 radio to ignore much of the band's work from the late 60s and early 70s. There is a video on here of Fred Vail talking about his frustration in trying to get the program director of WFIL in Philadelphia to add a song from the brilliant Sunflower album to the rotation. Long time ago while boarding a plane my mother suddenly gasped, “Those are The Beach Boys”. Now the jet were got on was a smaller one with 2 seats on one half 1 or 2 on other (can’t reacall). Anyway my 5 year old has to sit 1 or 2 rows in front of us. Well Brian Wilson sits next to her. He was the PERFECT gentleman. My wife offered to switch seats and he said, “No it will be ok”. He kept our daughter smiling and comfortable the entire flight. After landing and in baggage claim the whole band came up to us saying how sweet our daughter was. Apparently the other members were in front and next to Wilson. She entertained The Beach Boys with stories and Disney Characters (I think that for that brief flight they had some anonymity and enjoyed it). Anyway they told us how sweet she was and asked us if we would like to have them autograph something for her when she gets older. Well a page was ripped from a book and they signed it. Truly a nice group. Great memory. Thank god it was not ruined by a camera phone!

I met the Beach boys once = it was their first tour after Brian stopped touring with them - maybe 1965? They had just flown in from from a concert in Des Moines. Ia. My dad was the Director at the Omaha Airport, so he got me in, with one friend, to meet their plane at the airport. It was quite late at night. Carl, Al, and Mike were very nice to us and chatted a bit (though they were obviously quite tired), and signed our "concert program" from the previous concert tour. Dennis was an asshole - really rude and dismissive and wouldn't sign an autograph for us. An interesting and unforgettable experience! Still, of course, went to the concert the following night. I must have seen the BB's 8 or 9 times.

I know, right? It's like Greg Errico (the drummer from Sly & The Family Stone) admitted years back now that the drum kit they used in the studio to produce the bulk of their hits 1966-1969 was just a regular old, catalog-order set of Sears Silvertone drums. Even back then, the whole kit might've retailed for only $97 dollars.

There was another guy that made the Beatles nervous, (and made The Beach Boys nervous). Remember 1969 and the "Helter Skelter" murders? John Lennon said that song was about a carnival ride, not knifing guys. Notice The Beach Boys drummer in this vid? That's Dennis Wilson. He picked up a couple of hitch hikers one day, 2 girls, (one is still in prison to this day). They came back that night with their "mentor" Charles Manson. They ended up staying with Wilson for about 2 months. The Beach Boys producer Terry Melcher wouldn't give Manson a record contract. 5 people were murdered by Manson followers in Melcher's "old house". Probably not a coincidence.
