Ebrahim's story is that he is an immigrant from Somalia, and he fought in the Somali Civil War. They make a reference to this in S1E7, when he's telling Richie a battlefield story while tending to his stab wound, and Richie figures out that he's talking about the Battle of Mogadishu, which was the setting for the 1999 book and 2001 movie Black Hawk Down.
