The Beatles A Magical Mystery Tour Walkabout.

In this video I not only revisit Knole Park for another look at the Strawberry Fields Forever tree, but I visit West Malling High Street and visit Rain Grill and Baldocks & Sons shops before heading over to the old RAF West Malling airfield to seek out any remaining locations from the Beatles movie "Magical Mystery Tour"

Regarding the tree in the background: we live on the boundary of forestry land, and since moving here in 1983 similar trees have been planted, grown to much taller than that one and have only recently been felled. My guess is that tree was planted well after the Strawberry Fields promotional film was shot. Lovely video as always 👍

As a child in the early 1970’s, my late father was a Warrant Officer in 665 Squadron Air Training Corps and would often go to RAF West Malling to fly in gliders. I used to go along, mostly to ride in the RAF Landrovers. On one visit I was wandering around some empty offices and came across a room painted with a very large Union Jack flag. At the time it meant very little to a 10 year old boy crazy for football… I remember quite clearly the anti blast walls too! I’ve always thought that the stump with the stump was the tree! Fun video! ❤

A couple of corrections there. The hanger was located under what is now Asda's car park, you are the wrong side of the Control Tower, which incidentally is grade two listed. The Costas is not and was not original, it was built on where a lean-to workshop had been located which was removed. I was also there over the filming weekend, when they came down the stairs in their white tails I was sitting over on their right. I have some photos only of the outside (i.e.cars and crew) as the powers that be would not let anyone take photos inside the hanger. I was born in West Malling and am aware of the history of the airdrome. The Baldock family were personal friends and I used to buy my Levi's in their shop on the corner .Your film was very enjoyable, thank you.

This is my absolute favorite video of yours Tudor! Oh, how I longed to stand in the spot where The Beatles sang I Am the Walrus! And walk down the steps of the airport hangar in West Malling but haven't made it to those spots yet! MMT is my favorite film and album of all time. When I was a kid, I had the album with the pictures on the inside and would stare and dream while listening to the album! I lived in Philly. Still stare at the album even today and I am 63 years old! Never grew up I'm afraid. So, thanks for the walk Tudor and maybe one day my dream will come true, you never know!

The wonders of technology and YT are amazing!!🎬📽🎥🎞I became a Beatle fan in 1981(almost 13) and never dreamed I would see/get all this information about their life, whereabouts, lifestyle, etc. There have been movies, documentaries, books, pictures, and tours. In America some colleges have the Beatles as a college course. One of my favorite tours/walkabouts is the story of their Hamburg days(1960-61). I dont count Hamburg '62 because they were pretty much successful at that point(especially after Ringo joined). But great info and keep it up. ✌🏾✊🏾

The correct tree stump is, without doubt, the one that we decided on before, the second in your choice of three. I spent several hours and visits lining up the background and ensuring that the lie of the land was the same as the Beatles film. The knot is intriguing but not conclusive. Also, the crew set up their lighting and rigs a few yards in front of the tree, which is evident in all the photos available online. It's always exciting to see other people's points of view and their photos, particularly when they research it well and come up with plausible evidence. Keep up the good work, Tudor.
@TudorSmith
@TudorSmith Жыл бұрын
Absolutely Vince. The stump you guided me to really is for me, the stump of the actual tree. As pointed out by someone else that it doesn’t have the girth of the “McCartney” tree doesn’t factor for me. From my observations of the photographs available online, the stump you guided me to is the one 👍
@crosstownchord
@crosstownchord 7 ай бұрын
Tudor, if I could add my 2c worth - the stump from your previous video had a shallow trench of several metres extending out to one side (if the piano was out to the left, the trench would have been on the right at about 90 degrees to it). If you scout around on the web for enough location shots from the filming (beatlesdaily has a bunch of them), you will come across a black and white shot of the four Beatles standing verify stiffly by the tree (G-P-R-J) with the piano on their left and a long tree root (or roots) emanating from the stump that has partly emerged from the ground, behind them and to the right. The root is visible in the film, but the emerged bits are very clear in that photograph. I expect when the tree was cut down, the wayward root(s) would probably have been removed as a trip hazard, leaving behind said trench (still there when I visited last month). I also wonder if the knot in question was at the tree end of said root(s).

I only saw it recently. Not owning the DVD I did a little Googling and found a Hungarian website that has the full video. I actually think for it’s time and of course social leanings of the 60s it’s a bit of a giggle. Don’t read to much into it for plot or storyline and just enjoy the ride. It’s like a home movie. And as silly as this might sound, if you’re a Beatles fan then you’ll feel enriched for watching it.

Hi Tudor..How about finding the exact spot on Salisbury Plain where the Fabs filmed sequence in 'Help' playing 'the night before' as you can see Stonehenge in the background to enable lining up shots..I had a look for it myself nearly 40 years ago but stupidly didnt bring any shots from the film to aid me. I'd love to see you do that one..such a great song..really enjoying these videos you make!

Sad to see that the walls at the airport are gone. In summer of 1989 we visited it and we where allowed to drive up the airfield to the walls, where we shoot some photos. When was is demolished? They should have kept one wall

Hi - your videos are great. You have 2 or 3 videos about the "tree" online and only in this video we find out what the right tree is ( I am confident it is the stump with the small extra shown in this clip here - superimposed no doubt) but the headline does not mention it. Why dont you compile your journeys into one full clip with the final solution/tree at the end with the correct headline for all fans to enjoy?

The Bus was made in Luton U.K. by Bedford (Vauxhall)The " Artwork" is in fact Stickers that kept falling off or were also torn off by John during the tour. One reason why the bus arrived 2 hours late at Allsop Place at the begining of the Tour.Look closely at the Bus details during the film and you will notice the stickers are stuck on in different areas when they fell off.

I remember getting the Magical Mystery Tour VHS for Christmas in 87 I think. We watched it once and I never watched it again. The Beatles only failure (the TV show not the EP or LP which are fantastic) It really did just seem like a glorified home movie. If Mr Epstein had still been alive, I'm sure he would've been against it (whether he could've dissuaded Paul however, we'll never know). I have the bluray so I'll watch it again one day.
