A soap impression of his wife, which he ate and donated to the national trust- England's national trust bureau was an organization that would buy, or simply confiscate property such as land, estates, and art using the taxpayers money, similar to the National Historical Society in the U.S. It was accused, and largely proven that they would buy almost anything, especially art at insanely high prices, being that its value is simply the amount one is willing to spend, and they had endless tax revenues, they would do this to enrich themselves and their cohorts through pre-arranged kick-backs. Lennon was saying, any idiot could crap out(he ate and donated) anything, and the "artist' usually commissioned by the trust itself, would be paid exorbitant amounts of money, with thier kickbacks in place. You have to remember, the Beatles from day one were never shy about calling out the corruption of England's income, and tax policies.

Everybody in pop music had terrible lyrics before Dylan. Basically the only things you could sing about pre-Dylan were girls & cars & surfing. It was Dylan, after he went electric, who opened up the subject matter in pop/rock music.

The Beatles' style of music and songwriting in the early 1960s was basically an extension of the kind of "Doo-wop" rock and roll that was popular in the 1950s. By their own admission, their biggest influences were artists like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. When the Beatles first came out as part of the "British Invasion" of the early 1960s, that style of music had faded in the USA, as Motown groups like The Four Tops and The Temptations, and California surf bands like The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean were dominating the charts. As the 1960s wore on, you saw the Beatles' musical and songwriting style evolve into true works of art, starting with Rubber Soul and Revolver, and ending with Abbey Road and Let It Be.

Right, they seemingly had that depth to them before success, it's obvious from the earliest interviews w/ that sharp wit and slightly cynical vibe. They noted that their lyrics at first were explicitly designed to get mass appeal (ie. "to the toppermost of the poppermost") and both McCartney and Lennon were beginning to head into darker corners by the summer of '64 w/ I'll Be Back and Things We Said Today.

Did Bill really just use Love Me Do lyrics to dump on the Beatles? Wasn’t that the very first song they recorded after signing with Capitol/EMI? There’s even a version without Ringo. That’s the problem with Bill’s logic: he always uses the lamest examples to defend his arguments. He did the same thing in Religulous when he picked on the guys in the trucker chapel. I don't disagree on the Beatles lyrics. I get the point he's trying to make. Sure, I Am The Walrus had some terrible nonsensical lyrics, but that was also the point. I think if the point is to have nonsensical lyrics that just sound cool together, then it's totally fine. I only don't like it when artists TRY to write good lyrics but they turn out terrible. When you start to take yourself too seriously but have no talent is when it becomes an issue.

I have sort of agree with both of them. If I am listening to music in English I like to listen to the lyrics of a song, and try to find out what they mean if it isn't obvious. Sometimes there isn't much meaning, but the words sounds good together like 'Black Hole Sun' by Soundgarden. However if the song's lyrics are not in English, It isn't really possible for me to listen to the singer for meaning, and so I instead just judge if I like their voice. Of course the instrumentation matters tremendously in both, and as Brad said, I think it is best to write the lyrics and melody's separate from each other, and work on them until they are 'married'.

Try this: don't parse the lyrics, pretend they are a musical instrument, not a language. This is automatically the case with a song whose lyrics are in a language you don't understand. Beatles are highly overrated. The Clash was 100x the band. Also Townes. Van Zandt on a 2 week heroine bender could write circles around them…..

It's so funny when those people that can't do something criticize those who actually can do perfectly something as they no so much about it 😅 but they don't

Nothing he’s saying is actually offensive to the Beatles. I get the point being made, it’s always beat and melody over lyrics for the Fab 4. It’s all about the groove man ✌️

There are plenty of really good songs with nonsense lyrics. I think what bothers most of us is that he literally picked the very first song they recorded to support his argument. Wasn’t there something from A Hard Days Night with bad lyrics that he could have quoted? How about “You Know My Name ( Look up the #)”!

@@TitanicConcerts yeah I agree. Some of their best songs had gobbledegook words attached, e.g., Come Together, I Am the Walrus.. John said so himself. And they would often pick lyrics that sounded good over substance. Personally, I appreciate that. It’s music not poetry

James Taylor said once. “I regret ever giving John Lennon heroin”. By 1974 Lennon was in rehab. Many of our legendary rockers from the 60s and 70s were hooked on heroin. But no one knew they were on it.
