More than sixty years ago, Paul sang this great song at the Decca Audition being only nineteen years old. Today this man, probably the greatest musician alive and one of the greatest ever, turns eighty years old. Dear Paul, Happy Birthday and thank you for your music and everything that comes along with it!

McCartney is easily the most talented member of the band based off the decca audition, wouldn’t be surprised if they were tempted to offer only him a contract
@JimDeferio
@JimDeferio 10 ай бұрын
McCartney himself would disagree. He has said over and over again that him and John were equals. McCartney was better on piano and guitar than John was but as a singer and songwriter they were very much equals. The Beatles' early albums were dominated by John songs but McCartney began to catch up and dominate during Sgt. Pepper. That may be due to John's psychological problems because of LSD use and due to his marriage troubles. John did pull ahead again with his first two solo albums ("Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine") but then Yoko got him involved in political protests and began cheating on him. Be careful who you marry!!!
@CartersRemasters
@CartersRemasters 10 ай бұрын
@@JimDeferio I disagree with your believe that Lennon getting into left wing politics made his music bad, because of the imagine album..but yes I agree with everything you say roughly, my point was simply that in THIS audition, McCartney seems especially strong, his vocals seem more strong, and Lennon lacks his usual gusto, listen to Money, sounds really lightweight, while McCartney sounds strong and in charge with September in the rain..etc. I’m a lennon guy, he’s my clear favorite, but his performance in this audition is not great (in my opinion)
@JimDeferio
@JimDeferio 10 ай бұрын
@@CartersRemasters I NEVER said that it made Lennon's music bad. It distracted him and eventually he developed a writer's block. He was embarrassed by how prolific McCartney had become and how much he himself was struggling to write. He got really mad at Paul when Paul unexpectedly called upon him in NYC without notifying him first. John didn't want Paul to see him in the sad and unproductive state that he had fallen into. Lennon did begin getting back on track in 1980 and he said in an interview that the songs were coming quite fast and with little effort (like in the old days with the Beatles). See the book by scholarly historiographer Erin Torkelson Weber called "THE BEATLES AND THE HISTORIANS: AN ANALYSIS OF WRITINGS ABOUT THE FAB FOUR" Btw, I'm 73+ years old and when the solo albums were coming out I thought that Lennon clearly bested Paul's "McCartney" album and "Imagine" was maybe equal to "Ram" or a bit better. However, "Sometime in NYC" was a train wreck and so were Lennon's next two albums. McCartney fielded a whole bunch of singles that would have made a great album but instead he put out the not so great "Wild Life" and then a TERRIBLE album called "Red Rose Speedway". But, he came back with "Band on the Run" (the American album of Band On The Run was great).

This, and not Love Me Do, was actually the song that got the Beatles a recording contract. They were offered a publishing (not recording) contract by one of EMI's publishing firms, and Epstein promised them they would have the publishing if EMI offered them a recording contract too. Funnily enough, when they finally went into the studio, they never again considered the song.

Cilla’s version rocks. She nailed this song but the Beatles could’ve had 2 really powerful debut singles if they had played it smart. Love Me Do is a total throw away song. It’s just horrible. In the end, their stubbornness gave 2 other artists fantastic debut singles! This version isn’t half bad but they really could’ve nailed it had they put a bit more effort into it. ;)

Alright… I’m a Beatles Fanatic, some context, I’ve never actually listened to the Decca Audition songs. There were 3 originals I believe? This is the best of the 3. It’s actually very, very nice and sounds like it could actually fit on a 63-64 era Beatles album. The melody is beautiful. Paul is clearly doing an Elvis impersonation but it sounds Beautk

Beautiful*. Everyone saying “Hello Little Girl” is the best unknown Beatles song or best Decca audition original, I’m giving it to this. It has a theatricality to it also. Very pretty song.

George's guitar has a fantastic tone. Maybe the Shadows were an influence to this song.

i see why they didn't use it but wow what a lost jewel. Cilla didn't deserve such a treasure of Kitsch. And frankly there are worse things on the Decca Tapes than this.
