Or when the two brother in. CCR. or. Oasis. beat each other up on stage? How about the time my drummer. threw a brick. at my bass players face. and the next day they were friends again. lol

@@meyou-dv8ns I was in a band for a brief period, and you're quite right, of course. I always assumed that these four got along fine when playing, and Paul acknowledged that during these years they tended to bitch at each other more than before in the studio and in daily life. I can only assume that that would be the case with anyone living in each other's pockets for seven years.

I find it interesting that even at this stage of the game you have George Martin actually adjusting the tone controls on Paul's bass while he's playing in order to get the sound he's looking for and Paul doesn't seem to object, not something I would expect to see.

The Rickenbacker was his main bass by 1965 in the studio. The Hofner was used largely for promotional films, which, like the Revolution promo this footage was a promo film, and not much that we see and hear here made the album.
@slimkickens
@slimkickens Жыл бұрын
It was promotional, but it was still being recorded. Other than Let It Be, which he overdubbed, all of Paul's bass on the Let It Be album was the Hofner
@cindyscott54
@cindyscott54 Жыл бұрын
"Get Back"/"Let It Be" was intended to be back to basics, live. He started out using, at the Twickenham sessions, his original '61 Hofner 500/1 bass (identifiable by the neck pickup & middle pickup being close together, with a custom black plate around them, and no bridge pickup. This bass was used in the "Revolution" promo video.) At some point between the pause of filming at Twickenham & the subsequent move to Apple Studio, the '61 500/1 Hofner bass was stolen. It has never been seen since and Hofner continues to offer a reward for the return of the instrument. The look of the '61 is completely unique because of it's darker finish and the twin pickups in a single guard, along with some extra detail work completed during a 1964 reconditioning by a luthier. When the '61 vanished, Paul fell back to using his primary '62 500/1 (identifiable by a neck & bridge pickup in a standard configuration, and the white/green Fender Bassman sticker on the right front of the bass' face. The bass also, still, has a set list from '66 taped on the right side edge, near the neck.) Paul had used this bass on stage thru 1966 & retired it after "Abbey Road." It was Elvis Costello, during the recording of "Flowers In The Dirt," who asked Paul to pull the '62 500/1 out again. It's been his primary bass since then. He began favoring the Rickenbacher in '65, but still used the Hofner when it's tone was called for. In 1968 Paul was gifted a Precision bass by Fender (along with the Bassman head & cabinet. Fender also gave the band a PA system, three Twin Reverb amps, George's special Rosewood Telecaster, the Fender VI bass, and a Rhodes keyboard.) Paul had the finish on the Rick stripped to natural after "Get Back," and used that bass almost exclusively in his early solo work and throughout the Wings years. In 78/79, as Wings was Winding down, he used the Fender bass during live performances. After that, he's seen with both a Yamaha & a Music Man 5 string. (The Hofner DID make a cameo in the "Take It Away" video from the "Tug Of War" album). As a lefty guitarist/bassist myself, I've a close eye on what Paul has played through the years. I have several lefty Ovation acoustic/electrics, a lefty Hofner 500/1, a lefty Fender Telecaster & Stratocaster, a lefty Squire P bass, a lefty Epiphone Casino & Les Paul, and just recently acquired, via Thomann Guitars in Germany, a Harley Benton version of a lefty Rickenbacher bass & a lefty Gibson SG.

@@slimkickens I just went thru the film & the photo archive - the last time the '61 is seen, as best as I can tell, is Friday, January 3rd. The following Monday and thru to the rooftop, Paul is playing the '62 or the Rickenbacher. And, one time, he plays George's Rosewood Tele upside down. If you can pin down a date when you see '61 after the 3rd, please do let me know. There IS a story that the '61 was stolen from a storage closet at Abbey Road. But, that story simply indicates it went missing between the final session at EMI for the White Album & the recording of the "Get Back" project.

So clear the producer was looking for something “New” a new modern sound maybe by using a different bass. Paul is so seasoned that he knows why he chooses the Hofner almost every time instead and is literally placating this dude, knowing he doesn’t prefer the Rick. I really love that he knew what sound he wanted/preferred, bugged off with the violin bass in the end anyhow

Is that a right handed neck on a left handed guitar?
@50thunderer26
@50thunderer26 14 күн бұрын
I believe so. I think in the early 60's when The Beatles were gaining momentum, Rickenbacker sales increased due to George and John using Ricky's in the studio, on stage and on television. So Rickenbacker were keen to start work on a left handed bass and offer it to McCartney. Only the bass body was constructed to begin with and it was given a right handed neck, possibly for time saving reasons as Rickenbacker wanted McCartney to use, and therefore promote this new bass as soon as possible. When McCartney was first offered the bass, McCartney was dissatisfied with it apparently saying that it was too heavy compared to the lightweight Hofners that he was used to. So Rickenbacker took the bass back to the workshop and shaved some of the body down to make it a little lighter. The right handed neck still remained as this was still in the early days of the basses development. The slightly lighter bass was offered to McCartney again and he accepted it as a back up bass on tour, keeping his second Hofner as his main bass and semi retiring his original Hofner. Left handed Rickenbacker basses were soon produced with left handed necks as standard.

@@alexyerkey3141 Yeah, either the nut was screwed up on the Ric (Paul is telling George M. and Mal a string keeps popping off) or it could have been those tapewound strings he was favoring at the time. A different tension (and probably gauge) than the flatwounds he normally used. They worked for his Hofner, but the nut on the Ric may have not been cut to accommodate those type of strings. That would also account for part of the issue of it not being "Bassy" enough. The tapewounds, though mellow/warm, don't have quite the low end punch the metal flats would have. I remember reading Paul sent it back to the factory, after he sanded it down, for some repair work.
