The number of songs he (and Lennon) wrote starting in late 1966 to around June 1969 will never be surpassed. In less than three years, SP, MMT, White Album, Let It Be, Abby Road, plus all those singles, including Hey Jude and Lady Madonna. It is mind boggling.

Plus so many songs that ended up on their solo lps for a few years. That 3-4 year period is probably the most prolific song-writing period anyone has ever had. McCartney was seemingly coming up with a new iconic song every couple of days or week or so.

Ram is a jaw dropping work of pure genius. Critics should set themselves the task of making their own record, composing all the songs for it, singing it and playing all the instruments. Then they might get an idea of the work that went into this masterpiece.

Man, Ram is a brilliant album! I imagine it’s because John’s work was very personal and also political. Critics find that very “current” and “important” (I love John’s work as much as Paul’s), where they judge something not for the music but whether or not it fits in with their ideology. That’s why critics don’t mean shit.

@@jaelgeRetire after Wings? He did so many great things after Wings. McCartney II was ahead of its time and experimental with genres ranging from synth pop and new wave to electronica. Tug of War was a great album with many great songs. Pipes of Peace was ok and Press To Play wasn't too good, but then he did Flowers in the Dirt which was very good. Off the Ground was pretty good, but then he released Flaming Pie and Chaos and Creation which were both two of his best albums of his career. After that he has continued to release albums that are either very good or at least solid. Paul had and has no reason to retire.

Not trying to rain on your parade, Brother, just stating my honest opinion. 99.99% of what I know about music, composing & recording was inspired by the Beatles. @@jaelge I largely share your sentiment. Wouldn't go so far as to say he should have retired, but I find 95%+ of McCartney's post-Beatles output disagreeable, particularly after the early 1970s. Some exceptions here and there. I say this as someone who considers him one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, and whom posterity has yet to properly recognize. Important to note that I don't think his artistic credibility fell off so much as the freedom solo artistry afforded him was in stark contrast to his fellow bandmates' (and Martin's) peer judgment and quality control. Either way, he probably earned his right to musical self-indulgence. : - )

Funny that people try to compare, a band that did most of their tracks, except the strings and brass like the Beatles. When on the other hand, from about 1965-1966 .... the Beach Boys were on the road touring, while Brian Wilson, had professionnal studio musicians to record the tracks. and the only thing the other Beach Boys were doin', is the vocal, no instruments, until they had to play it live ( and the songs didn't remain the same live ). Guys like McCartney will sometimes take guitar solos, play the drums on many tracks, switch to piano or organs on certains songs. Don't gey me wrong, Brian was a brilliant composer. but he broke down after hearing Sgt Pepper, everybody knows that. But it is like saying who were the best band The Beatles or the Rolling Stones. Numbers don't lie. Check the best selling albums of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine or Billboard You'll be surprised to see how the Beatles oversales the Beach Boys and the Stones, and I don't include their solos careers The four Beatles on their own count a lot's of top 10 hits more than the other two bands .

I 'd blame the limited to just 40 or 50 minutes of music, of the vinyl LP format for it and also that the record companies would be reluctant to release double albums. If cd technology was available in their recording days, we would see many of those ideas materializing into proper Beatles songs.

hammer44head - John, Paul and George were all coming up with very different types of songs... all the way back to 1966. The three great writers in the group all were doing very different things - for pretty much the last four years of the band's existence (1966-69). Listen to the songs on the "Revolver" album. Paul's songs and John's songs were very different (as different as "Paperback Writer" and "Rain"), and George brought in a song that was basically Indian music. This is actually what made The Beatles so great. They were three bands in one. They had something for everyone.

@@hammer44head wrote this "by the late 60's they could barely stand to be in the same room together much less work on each others tunes." That is a common misconception that the public has been misled to believe... but it is simply not true. The four Beatles worked together very well to create the songs for both the "Let It Be" album and the "Abbey Road" album. When Peter Jackson's new movie finally gets released... you will get a much better view of how well they were actually working together - right through to the last days of recording "Abbey Road". Here is a link to the group playing together and having fun during the "Let It Be" period (January of 1969) working on many songs that never made it on to a Beatles LP. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7Wmgtl1vcWlook.html That link is two hours long - and provides a glimpse of what the band was like in that period. The group certainly had problems (#1. John forcing Yoko onto the group when the others didn't want her there, #2. John choosing to make Klein the group's manager despite Paul being adamantly against Klein.), but they still could get together and make amazing records together. Deep down they loved each other and making music together was still fun for all 4 of them - right to the end (when they finished Abbey Road in August of 1969). Yes, there were occasional squabbles of being sick of doing so many takes of Paul's "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"... or of doing 67 takes of George's "Long, Long, Long"... or doing 70 takes of John's "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"... or doing 117 takes of John's "Sexy Sadie". But those were really minor squabbles. These guys were closer than brothers... and people that close have disagreements and squabbles. Right through the end of their time together... they could put aside their differences - and create magical music together.

Loved this song from the first time I listened to it! RAM may be my favorite McCartney album. I haven't heard this tune in a while, but in this demo form, it makes me think he was thinking of Brian Wilson. I'm getting a "Surf's Up" vibe here.
@tonybates7870
@tonybates7870 3 жыл бұрын
Surf's Up hadn't been released then, either - it's as if McCartney anticipated that sound, although as he and Wilson were well acquainted he could have heard Beach Boys demos that ended up on the album. Come to think of it, some of Surf's Up was written in 1967.
@briantravolta
@briantravolta 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonybates7870 Yes, I know Surf's Up wasn't officially released until after RAM. But if the unreleased SMILE album came out as originally planned, I think it was due in 1968. And I know Paul and Brian had met and bonded by them. They also were label mates on Capitol Records (at least in USA). I think Derek Taylor was also a mutual associate. So I'm guessing there's a good chance McCartney heard some version of Surf's Up before writing Back Seat.

I absolutely love this song, but even in the 'finished' version, on Ram, it still feels like there's something missing. I also feel that Todd Rundgren was massively influenced by the Ram version of this song and re-used several elements of it throughout his career. :) Thanks for all of the great uploads.
