Totally agree 100%. I always thought that no other band grew as much musically, and as fast, and still put out amazing music in the short time that the Beatles did, and influenced popular music as much.

Very good interview from what I saw in this video, the Beatles are still very influential & there are lots of fans out there that wish they were just as successful as the Fab Four. I think it’s important for every artist to change, whether we like it or not.

As a lifelong Beatles fan, who grew up in a house where their music was played when I was a small child, I whole heartedly agree with Steven Wilson. They are the benchmark by which all popular music is measured. It was a staggering four years from Love Me Do to Tomorrow Never Knows, and it wasn't just this amazing musical evolution, but the level of success after success of every single and album release, the amount of records they sold during and after their time together as a band, and their influence on pop music that can be felt even now over 60 years since their very first record release. They are indeed the greatest band of all time, that level of musical quality or success will never be repeated again, and it's great to see an artist of Steven Wilson's calibre acknowledging this. By the way Steven's latest album The Harmony Codex is out now and it is fantastic and is well worth checking out, and I love the direction that he is taking his music in...

Every time I play The Beatles I can't help but smile and inwardly sigh 'ahhh'. Now I love hundreds of other artists but I can't honestly make that same statement about them. Certainly I enjoy and appreciate those artists very much. I was lucky enough to be born just before they formed and my earliest musical memory is listening to "She Loves Me" on our old radiogram radio. In short, comfort food for my soul. Thanks for your video and insights Larry.

As a musician Larry I think musicians should just do what they feel like doing and be true to themselves,if a musician is constantly hopping on trends then they'll get messed up because they're not being real and the Beatles were special and the best band out there because they had so much talent, two super talented singer songwriters in John Lennon and Paul McCartney with incredible harmonies and later a pretty talented third songwriter, vocalist in George Harrison and also Ringo Starr was the perfect drummer for the band, they also had great people around them like George Martin,I certaiinly wouldn't mind having George Martin and the other Beatles contributing to my music,it must have been nice! Apart from anything else the Beatles are probably the most important group and in my opinion it doesn't matter whether you like them or not. They paved the way for all the pop and rock that was to follow.

How would the world be if the Beatles didn't exist (not thinking about the movie Yesterday). Would boy band music (because the Beatles were essentially boys when they started) have become popular as songwriters as they did? Would Brian Epstein have found another band to promote and shop around to labels, finding George Martin? I fell in love with the Beatles' music one album at a time from their first to their last, just craving each one as it was loaned to me by my 8th grade homeroom teacher. They weren't blues, they weren't rock, they weren't pop, they weren't folk. They were the Beatles - John, Paul, George, and Ringo - each with their separate personalities. No other band has done that since. I think more people can name each individual Beatle than any other group and it continues even with the youth of today, at least the ones I've asked. Thank for the clip Larry. I will be sure to listen to the full interview tomorrow while I'm at work! Cheers!

"They weren't blues, they weren't rock, they weren't pop, they weren't folk. They were the Beatles" yes, in a nutshell. I heard one of the young "Beatles reactors" on KZfaq say the Beatles were their own genre, and that rings true as well.

I love what you say about The Beatles having the “perfect career”. What they achieved in such a short time is way beyond compare. I listen to their later albums all the time, but they’d be classic artists even if we only knew those first few singles. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Larry, I agree The Beatles have set the standard for all artists to follow. They are more than just a band, they are THE NO 1 music legends, the likes of which will never be repeated. And Like Steven Wilson they are not my favourite band, although I absolutely love them but my favourite bands are Blackfield (Steven Wilson/Aviv Geffen"s joint collaboration) and America (who had some of their albums produced by George Martin). The Beatles music will last forever and music would not have been the same without them. They were the first artist I remember as a kid and I will love them forever.

“Progression” is a good term to describe the Beatles diversity explosion. I think the sharpest/steepest progression came in the Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Peppers time period. Those three albums continue to blow my mind, as we use to say in the 60s. In fact, if pressed, I’d place Revolver above Peppers on the creativity/diversity/progression scale.

He's right, it doesn't matter what you think about the Beatles and whether you like their music or less, I know of no other artist with such a dramatic and rapid progression, they are unmatched in terms of songwriting and artistry. Their first album, Please please me, was released in 63 and if you listen to Rubber Souls, released in 66, only three years apart, it's not only a different band, it's a different world, also because of them. within 15 months they released, Rubber Soul, Revolver IMO their best album, a little thingie like Strawberry fields forever-Penny Lane and Sargent Pepper, it's mind-boggling.

Hearing this worthy statement on The Beatles by an excellent musician and producer as Steve Wilson is, is very inspiring and clearing it all up. In my opinion The Beatles are and will ever be on top of the world of music. - Nice to hear that Pink Floyd are that highly regarded by Steve Wilson because they’re No. 2 for me.

Big fan as well but all the stars aligned for the Beatles to become what they were from the technologies that they were first on a lot to the culture changes in the world to having 2 of the best songwriters in the same band all were factors that made their catalog so top shelf compared to others in their time and after luck and skill

Sometimes I don't think of the Beatles as the greatest until I'm reminded with films like Eight Days a Week and Get Back. Wilson is 1000% accurate, that progression in that short amount of time will never be matched.

The Beatles had a perfect recording career, perhaps because their phenomenal work only lasted a short time (7/8 years). Maybe if they hadn't split up, the quality wouldn't have been consistent over time! The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull, and many others, most of whose work lies in their first ten to fifteen years. Who has had an exemplary career spanning five decades? Even Bowie, who ended on a high with The Next Day and Blackstar, experienced a loss of inspiration during the 80s and a large part of the 90s with the exception of the superb Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) and Outside. Regarding Steven Wilson and Pink Floyd, he contradicts himself all the time because several years ago, I remember that he hated when critics and fans mentioned Pink Floyd to talk about influence in his work! (from which he drew musical inspiration in his career with Porcupine Tree or solo). It's pure Steven Wilson!😉

I'm conflicted about that idea of The Beatles being a boy band. I wasn't there to see it, but from the outside looking in, it looks to me like they started as a boy band, but turned into something amazing. I can see why ppl would call them a boy band, but that's from those who only ever hear their first handful of singles and don't bother to look to the other stuff. Some say they're a boy band and a majority think they're one of the greatest bands ever. My opinion: they're both. Every boy band was copying their formula in the early days, but only a handful of musicians can make the kind of impact on people's hearts that John, Paul, George and Ringo did.

There was no such thing as "boy bands" then. The closest thing were the teen idols that were in abundance at the time. Hard rock, prog and metal didn't exist so The Beatles were as rockin' as it got. They weren't manufactured, wrote their own music and didn't do choreography. Check out some of their pre fame performances in Hamburg. Closer to punk in the beginning.

With TOOL, being my all time favorite band, their style has changed throughout the years, but still retained their core sound. Metallica changes to their sound and image was just a bit over the line for a big fan like I was between '85 to '92. I can now appreciate what the were trying to do, but back then, I was really disappointed! I mean, c'mon, they cut their hair and started wearing black eye make-up! It was a big turn-off! About the Beatles, I can totally understand how wonderful their time was for the fans who grew up with them. They were pioneers and innovators! They really do deserve all the recognition as the biggest musical influencers of the 20th century. I was born just a little too late for it to influence me like it should have.

Spinal Tap is still the touchstone by which all bands successfully looking for a non explosive drummer will be measured. From "I Want to Hold Your Hand" -> "I Am the Walrus" is in fact only 4 years! BTW Imagine a walrus demanding to hold your hand... or not. XTC is the band that Steven Wilson has called something like "his equivalent of the Beatles" I believe and I can't fault him for his good taste in saying that.

People who slag off the Beatles are usually just trying to be contrarian and always end up making themselves look stupid. I see what he means about many bands now sticking to a similar style. One of my favourite bands in the last 25 years who have not kept making the same album over again is Wilco. And to be fair to them, a band that you fell out of love with also kept on trying to develop their sound and doing different styles. They have been quite experimental at times. This band are from Ireland. Can you guess who they are? 😜
