At 68 I might be your oldest subscriber, so these songs are really baked into my musical DNA. And I love lists. Three very cool lists. My top 10 favourites which are mixture of my earliest childhood recollections and therefore have stuck with me all these years and then later discoveries as I bought and listened to thei full catalogue. 1 - A Day In The Life 2 - She Loves You 3 - Hey Jude 4 - I Feel Fine 5 - Let It Be..... All versions are great but prefer the Let It Be Naked version. 6 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps 7 - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 8 - Strawberry Fields Forever 9 - Penny Lane 10 - Something Interestingly The Beatles had 22 single releases in the UK between 62 and 70. Four of those were double a sides . 26 tracks in total. 14 of those tracks did not origionally appear on an album (Magical Mystery Tour was a double EP in the UK and not listed as an album or a single). 16 tracks if you count both Get Back and Let It Be that were both first released as singles well prior to the Let It Be album and were produced by George Martin and not Phil Spector. Astonishing.

As I have stated before, I do not have a bias against cover songs. If it's a great song and a great performance, it's got an equal shot. My top favorites are A Hard Days Night/Should Have Known Better because after watching the movie on TV those made me, rather my family as I was only ten, to get some albums. So got the red and blue albums for my birthday. And shortly after I started to collect the studio ones.There was something very different to those early frisky Beatles songs compared to other upbeat pop music , and surely to fifties rock n roll hits. Tough assignment but I think between the three, you scratched the surface nicely. I cheated and picked 10 album cuts and 10 singles (since The Beatles often treated them as separate entities). Singles: "Please, Please Me", "She Loves You", "I Feel Fine" (great into & power pop), "Ticket to Ride", "Day Tripper", "Paperback Writer", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Hey Jude", "Something" and "Come Together. A cut from (almost) each album: "There's a Place" (shockingly original, even beating Wilson's "In My Room" and listen to those harmonies), "Not a Second Time" (cynicism), "I Should Have Known Better" (maybe this was a single but it's one of the best off of AHDN. Listen for the heartbreaking bridge), "Baby's in Black" (love & death), "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" (more cynicism), "In My Life" (one of Lennon's best), "Taxman" (an early heavy George song and primo album opener), "Good Morning, Good Morning" (a different day in the life with a guitar solo that cuts through the scent of patchouli oil), "Happiness is a Warm Gun" (a dangerous song with an amazing vocal performance) and "Two of Us" (friendship through rose tinted glasses). Ya, I skipped ABBEY ROAD. Didn't want to cheat even more by adding the Side 2 medley. Just realized that I picked mostly Lennon songs! Yikes! Guess I could sub-in "Blackbird"... This is impossible! I think Jason has my favorite overall list though. Those John Lennon tracks like She Said She Said and, Tomorrow Never Knows, Because, Battle of John and Yoko are some of their strongest material. There's a wealth of depth in each and every one of those songs.

Magical Mystery Tour was sunshine and candy to me as a kid. As an adult, some songs are overplayed and some underplayed, but I think Hello Goodbye rises to the top at any age. Also, good call on Rain.

As an original Beatles fan...I am 67 yrs now(!!).....you really should have made this a top 20 list.There are just SO many great songs.One thing I've noticed is that older folks (like myself) have a bit more reverence for the older stuff----not a criticism, merely an observation...It kind of matches the saying...."guess you had to be there".......There was just something in the air....& some of their covers of other artists were pretty damned good!..."Twist & Shout" , "Anna", "Money", "You've Really Got a Hold On Me"....some of Lennon's best vocals!....Enjoy your videos,Thanks!

I was WAITING WAITING WAITING for someone to remember "Rain," a non-album track. BUT if you mention "Rain," how do you ignore "Ticket to Ride", which both have that jangly Rickenbacker guitar that would help inspire The Byrds? Also, Ringo's drumming is virtuoso complex on "Rain" -- none of that, "He kept up the beat" or "He wasn't the best drummer in the Beatles!"

I would have thought ranking Beatles songs impossible, but I did it as well. I had 39 songs in my "Mount Olympus" section . It's a near-impossible task, as basically all of the songs (but maybe 15, in my rankings) are anywhere from good to immortal and the differences are incremental at best.

Obviously, there's a tendency to prefer the later Beatle's tracks. It's understandable since those songs have a more modern sound. The early Beatles (1963-65) blew the doors off the music scene with their fresh, exuberant reimagining of R&R and pop. Their mix of the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly & Little Richard was intoxicating. Songs like Please, Please Me, There's a Place, I Saw Her Standing There, Twist & Shout & All My Lovin' were all little masterpieces.
