Beautiful show. Not an ounce of cynicism. Sad and funny and real, but never mocking or cynical. Also, Lindsay and Sam have the best TV parents ever. When Linday asks her dad why he isn't as cool with them as he is with Nick, he says it's because Nick's father is a hard man, and he knows what that's like because so was his. Lindsay replies something like: "I know what that's like too," and Mr. Weir just says: "No you don't." And it just hangs there because she immediately knows it's true. Damn.

I feel like no one evert talks about Alan, that scene with bill is effectively in a coma and him breaking down and talking about he would love to join their group but he’s afraid of it damaging his reputation and he’s obsessed with looking like a cool, tough bully. The part of the episode where they are all dressed up in costumes and he sits on his bike wanting to go over but decides against it speaks volumes. Great writing. Great show.

It was really better off this way ending after one season. How long can a show about high school students really go on when half of them are in their final year? Maybe they could have squeezed out one more season, but I feel like it told the stories that it needed to tell very well. And running it into the ground wouldn't have done the series any favors. I love how there’s no 1 dimensional characters. Each main character has at least one episode which is pretty much dedicated to them and their story. When I first started watching I assumed that Kim would just be a mean asshole for the whole series with no reason behind her actions. The same goes for Allen, I loved how we got a look into why he is the way he is and how he isn’t just a bully for the sake of being a bully like characters in other shows.

One of my all time favorite shows by far. It sucks that it was canceled, but there's definitely some beauty in it. The lack of resolution and answers as to what happened to these characters let's our imagination run wild. I certainly believe Apatow would have done this series justice in later seasons, but great things come in small packages. And this package is perfectly wrapped with a beautiful bow on top. It'll forever be a gem.

One of the most devastating turning points in the show for me was the very sad scene in which Lindsay finds Mr. Rosso trying to get into his locked car. Up until this point Mr. Rosso was able to maintain his forcefully peppy school councilor persona, but now he's extremely upset and Lindsay gets to see his true self, which appears to be exactly the same as the rest of the freaks: a struggling rebel who has no clue what he's doing and is facing the consequences of his failures. It is also the scene that includes some of the most era-related cultural commentary, outlining the death of the spirit of the 60's and the return of conservative and traditionalist ideals in America. I think what makes this scene very powerful is that the superficial boundary between councilor and student is broken and now it's just two sad and frustrated people who are losing faith in their fate.

@@jacob_yancosky right but these are actors, with roles to a script written by other than themselves. Completely irrelevant to sequential series of random events people call real life. Who were they to determine the lives of others distraught?. Where failure is indeed a reoccurring component of life, so is succeeding. The growth of these characters were never fully apparent for the viewers to truly understand humanity. Yes humanity. Because I’ve fallen in the shoes of about each character in this series, I truly believe that there is more to these characters than what we’ve seen. Think about who they were before the show, and once it was promptly ended. They were left behind in the dust, along with their futures and dreams. Uncertainty is what builds character. Without that, these actors would’ve been engulfed by criticism once the fan favorite went off the rails. But in the end, the writer himself saw hope and worked miracles to help these so called failures to succeed. Remain positive, see life a beauty not a burden.

Agree with most of this video, but I don't think Daniel was lazy for having given up easily. I think he had the spirit beaten out of him. He never got the right attention or help he needed when he needed it most, so by the time anyone offered, it was too late. He got too comfortable in the idea that his future had already been paved for him and it was set for the worst possible course. It's sad, but that happens for a lot of kids who grow up in similar situations. He had to then hide all those insecurities behind a cool demeanor so no one bothered him about it. Had he met someone who cared earlier, I think he would have been more like Bill (minus the nerdiness lol)

Dude, I really liked the things you said about life dreams and the harsh reality that we may never reach them, as an aspiring artist it really resonated with me. Sometimes we don't really appreciate the things we have and I think that's a key factor to happiness. I've been really struggling with depression and on top of that I don't really know where I'm gonna end up to in the future. I always had this dream of becoming a successful artist but this silly dream becomes more and more unrealistic as time goes by. Yea maybe we won't be sucessful on what we want but that's life, we gotta learn to live with that and find purpose and beauty elsewhere. And the fact that we're all here discussing these deep subjects is a testament of how good this show really was and still is. It's definetly on my top five greatest shows ever. It's a shame it got cancelled but we got 18 episodes of absolutely perfect life stories with human characters and meaningful content. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this video.

Lindsay and Sam have the best sibling bond I've seen portrayed on a show. She's the older protective sister who is also fun and lively, while Sam is the younger brother who looks up to her and is equally protective.

I fell in love with this show many years ago. I've been purposely putting off watching it again because I remember how upset I was that it just ended after season one. Then I saw it on Hulu a couple weeks ago so I rewatched it. I flew through the first half then took a small break and watched one episode every couple days to savor it. Just finished it again. We should set a "Freaks and Geeks Week" once a year when we all go back and watch the season.

You really hit the nail on the head. Watching this show in high school, it fueled the pride and love I had for my “freakness”, and I didn’t think much more of it than a relatable show to get high to. After having to drop out of school and years of addiction and struggle, watching this school back as a sober adult is so different, because I see the sadness and futility in the middle of the comedy. Your analysis is amazing. Hope you’re doing well and thanks for a great video.

I really enjoyed your commentary. This show has always given me such a mix of emotions - it brings a smile to my face and makes my heart swell with nostalgia for my younger years. But it also brings on this melancholic haze that hovers over me for a couple of days any time I revisit the series. I think beautiful sadness is a perfect way to describe it. We don’t all automatically end up with happy lives and Freaks & Geeks does a wonderful job at showing that.

I think it's because it's so universal. I was born in the 80s and went to high school in Sweden in the late 90s - early 00s, almost 20 years after this show was set, but I could still very much identify with this show and its characters. It just nailed a realistic portrayal of growing up, regardless of the decade or even country.

i just watched this recently and even though im 19, i feel like it made me. i love high school tropes and film settings and this show was so impactful in many ways. for one, the actors just made me so happy with all of their performances. i have such a soft spot for the geek boys because their acting at that age is so natural and realistic and it was so fun watching the scenes where they geek out and enjoy hanging out with each other, its so cute. one of my favorite scenes is when daniel plays d&d with them. the cast is so amazing and linda cardellini is so pretty. all of the side characters get a good amount of screen time and it's awesome to see more of millie and alan throughout the show. there's so much more i can say about this show but i can't find the words, i just have the amazing feeling in my heart when i think about this show.

Paul Feig once said in an interview what would’ve happened to the characters in season 2. It would’ve been so great to see what he had in mind play out. I won’t give it all away but he said he felt Lindsey would’ve become a human rights lawyer as an adult, so at least she wouldn’t have become a loser

As Bill Simms wrote below about the show, "It was sad, funny, serious and very realistic. The characters were very layered and not just good or bad". And the young actors were amazingly talented.

Thank you for reminding me how wonderful and touching it is. I've had the good fortune of bumping into/meeting five of the show's characters: Kim (while bartending), Nick (delivering videos), Millie (Starbucks), Mr. Kowchefski (bartending), Karen Scarfolli (Rashida Jones @ Chin Chins), Lindsay (Disney store). Mostly all pleasant interactions and all loved hearing me say it's the best show ever.

Definitely one of if not the best coming of age story I’ve ever experienced. So sad this show only got 1 season but man did they make something special here with just 18 episodes. The weeping feeling I felt as I watched Lindsay drive away in the van felt like a real goodbye. I love this show and I’ll definitely be back for a rewatch

Thank you for this - you are not alone in your love for this series. I was 29 when the series aired, and I remember watching it on NBC thinking they finally got it right with regard to showing how high school was for many of us. It was a crime that it was cancelled after one year, but at least we have the box set (and the awesome Yearbook DVD edition) that has tons of extras and commentary and behind the scenes footage. Such a classic show. If I had to describe it in one word (which is nearly impossible) I'd say that word would be "Authentic". Thank you for the video - it was great!!

I watched this show when I was a sophomore in high school, about 15 years after the show ended. I remember crying at the end because I loved the characters. I wanted to know where they would end up. I remember feeling really bad for Nick and being mad at Lindsay for how she treated him. Now I'm an adult and I watched it with my boyfriend, who had never seen it before. He loved it too and felt sad too but I got a new impression this time. I liked that this show wasn't afraid to show their characters being bad people. Lindsay treated everyone pretty poorly. She was judgmental but wanted to 'be bad.' And Neal kinda sucked, he was really weird and creepy. But we find out that his father probably didn't teach him the things he needed in order not to be a creep. You didn't even talk about Sam and Lindsay's parents! Especially their mom, she grows a lot as a character, too. There was so much going on in this show and people just weren't ready for it yet.

I watched this in middle school and then again in high school and it’s wild how much I related to Lindsay. School comes easy to me and if I try I could get perfect grades and have fun in extracurricular activities. I was friends with some of the “freaks” in middle school and got in trouble a lot. Freshman year was my mathletes episode where I ditched a lot of friends and just focused on being perfect. Sophomore year I got hella depressed and had to deal with a lot of family issues and death. From that point it went downhill and I good decent grades but not perfect. Senior year I never went to classes, didn’t apply to colleges dispite having a high gpa, got in a lot of trouble with parents and at school and almost didn’t graduate on time. I’m rewatching it again now that I’m in college and it’s so weird to reflect on. I think nick’s storyline hits me so hard because I had a friend like that who I was also super into and he ended up not doing anything. Also Harris was so underrated I wish we got more episodes for his sake.

Very nice synopsis Nd breakdown of this show. I was really sad when it was canceled. Freshman year I was sam. Very small and immature. By senior year I was a pothead and became lazy and unmotivated in school. I can relate to most of these characters at some point during high school. I'm also class of '86 so it's very relatable in a time line way. The music, the styles and the attitude of the early 80s. Just like the song from Fast Times at Ridgemont High by Billy Squire...... This could be the best time of our lives. Even though it had it's sadness, it's not far from true. I host a podcast and we discussed 16 of the 18 episodes and plan on finishing the series soon. Thanks for a great video!
