These scenes all gave me a feeling of loneliness and beeing lost in the world. But it's not a cold or clinical feeling like i get from the work of Nicolas Winding Refn. These scenes from Michael Mann feel very human, very warm and loving. Like a person with a lot of pain is watching those people in the movie from a far or an angel who is watching the life of the humans and who feels sad for them because he cannot do anything for them. He can just watch their struggle of being a human being. That is what i felt watching this video.

Michael Mann is a great director that puts emotion into his scenes with the Music & Bands he selects! I've always believed Mann a Chicagoian growing up in the city during the 50's & 60's saw the city in its Good & Bad light! Wise Guys and all and applied it in most of his movies! Thief & Crime Stories is a perfect example with the opening scenes showing Buckingham Fountain at night and the TWA Prop landing at Meigs Airport with Del Shannon's Runaway playing as background music! It doesn't get more 1960's Chicago than that! And the fact he actually used John Santucci a real thief! And ex Chicago Cop Dennis Farina in roles opposite of their real life occupations! CMTFU! I know Heat is supposedly his No#1? But I'll take James Cann in Thief all day! It's closer to reality than any of his movies! Especially if you were exposed to that type of life? Especially the 60's in Chicago!
