I feel EXACTLY the same way about The Bee Gees! I could, literally, sit and listen to their music ALL DAY LONG! They were magic! Their REAL gift may have been the ability to write such great songs. They hook you in immediately. But then, there are those voices! There's never been any other group that could touch them. I just find that their music NEVER gets old, and I just want to hear it again and again. Thank you SO MUCH for checking this one out. As always, LOVED your reaction to them!

The Bee Gees broke up for about a year or so in 1969 and when they got back together in 1970, The brothers wrote this song in the 1st afternoon they were together. IN ONE AFTERNOON, they wrote this hit! Barry was 24, the twins were 21.

Well, technically they didn't break up. Robin went solo for a year. Barry and Maurice still performed as The Bee Gees, and sometimes had their sister Lesley perform onstage with them. Nothing like sibling (vocal) harmony, any way you can get it.

Back in the early 70s, I worked at Philharmonic Hall in Lincoln Center. I was a young college student. One night I was asked to take The Bee Gees to the stage from the Green Room. They were so friendly and down to earth, I've never forgotten it. This was around 1974, not long before they went Disco. They did all their classics like this one. It was a beautiful show and they were at their peak! Love those guys!

Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song in August 1970 with "Lonely Days" when the Gibb brothers had reconvened following a period of break-up and alienation. "Robin came to my place," says Barry, "and that afternoon we wrote 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' and that obviously was a link to us coming back together. We called Maurice, finished the song, went to the studio and once again, with only 'Broken Heart' as a basic structure, we went in to the studio with that and an idea for 'Lonely Days', and those two songs were recorded that night". It looks like this was the brothers makeup song!

This performance is from the last days of the group, and it shows. The power in Barry's voice is gone, but his humanity and depth more than make up for his diminished vocal skills. Love the Bee Gees from the very first time I heard them way way back. One of my favourites though is "Words".

Barry said in an interview that him and Robin was on the outs and Robin called and came over and they wrote this song about their relationship that day

Even though the song sounds like it was about a woman this song was one of two recorded when they first got back together after they had broken up for a year and a half in the late sixties, they wrote this song and Lonely Days the same night I think at Robert Stigwoods insistence that they get right back into the studio

Tragedy was my favorite when I was 13...I bought the record and had to exchange it at least 6 times at Turtles because it skipped. Oh how I love CDs now.

I’ve just found you on KZfaq and am so enjoying seeing your reaction to the group that was the soundtrack of my youth. May I give you a little in-sight to this lovely song?... in 1969, after having been so successful in their musical careers in such a short time, the pressures of the music business and the entourage of those hangers-on who were pulling the brothers apart ended with Robin quitting the band. After a year and a half apart Robert Stigwood, their manager, put his foot down and pulled them back together. The brothers, hurt and not trusting one another, went back into the studio and ‘How do you Mend a Broken Heart’ was their first release thereafter. They say that the song was the of expressing the hurt that they had each endured and literally brought them back together.. never letting outside influences get between them again. 🤗 Thank you for introducing these incredible brothers to a whole new generation of listeners!! 💖
