The Beginner's Guide to Brush Lettering: Basic Strokes

Before jumping in with writing letters and words with a brush pen, it's advantageous to practice writing the basic strokes. Learn how to write downstrokes, upstrokes, c-strokes, and o-strokes in brush lettering using the Tombow Dual Brush Pens.

Yes they are! It comes with practice. You could try holding the pen differently (more perpendicular to the paper), and think about "pulling" instead of "pushing" the pen tip. Hope that helps!

'Automaticity'. I just learnt a new word. :) Great video. Thank you for starting with the basics and encouraging us to practice first, as opposed to most of the videos on here of people just writing out intricate words quickly without actually teaching us anything. (I think a fair amount of videos on here of 'brush pen tutorials' are really just created in order to show off how well they can write, as opposed to actually 'teaching' technique.) Subscribed!

I got a hand lettering book and it didn’t have how to do “C” and “O” strokes..thanks for the tip! I am also having a lot of trouble with lower case “a” and “g”, am also left handed and I have trouble with figuring out how to hold the pen..

Mostly just a lot of practice. There are some left-handed hand-letterers out there that would be helpful to follow for more specific tips. My favorites are Dawn Nicole from Dawn Nicole Designs and Renmade Calligraphy on Instagram and her blog. They have lots of great tips!

Crystal Korzep It's a change in pressure, not angle. Generally you want to keep the pen at the same angle, whatever is comfortable to you. For a thick downstroke, you'll want to press down; for a thin upstroke, lighten up on the pressure.

You could use Crayola Supertips or Tombow Dual Brush Pens :D

I love to try something. I have changed my handwriting time to time back and high school. Never seem to get the right handwriting. I went the your website and try to download the practice worksheet but I couldn't seem to get it loaded or there was a server error. I got the lowercase but I want the uppercase as well. 😔😢

They should be fine to use on regular paper unless you go over your strokes multiple times (then the paper might tend to pill up a little bit).

It's just on the first trys, and later on you will learn how to control the pressure you put on your brushpen. If you can't stop lifting your pen before every upstroke, I suggest practicing more until you get the control.

I've used camlin, apply less pressure and you can make your up strokes a little thicker than usual for ease. I had camlin and I used this trick. Now I have Tombows and they are almost similar, just that Tombows are much more smoother and long lasting than Camlins. I'll upload a tutorial on brush lettering using different mediums(pen, Brush pen, highlighter etc) soon. It would be lovely if you could check it out :)
