@@petebeard ah, boulderdash young man 😁 Your research is solid. I never thought I would be interested in Cheret* if not for your well made presentation. The reason I knew Boisbaudran was from sitting next to a classically trained painter (Florence) during life drawing sessions. He would sit observing the model not drawing until the last minute and then put down some lines on a sketch about two by two inches. From that (and an excellent knowledge of anatomy) he could later make an oil painting three by five feet or so. * and others. Also, the illustration periodicals as hubs that ties them together.

I started out in animation (although not as an animator - more background art and character design) for what became Cosgrove hall animation in the 1970s. @petebeard you and John Walsh are my two favourite art historians. Have you heard his Yale Lecture series on Van Gogh? It is moving and inspiring. It shows me the need for sages to guide laypeople on the journey to help us see what we might miss with an untrained eye. I strongly recommend it and would love to know what you think of it. It makes me lament that after finishing my schooling in the public school system in America that all I learned about Van Gogh was his ear and his breakdown.

Hello and it's good to know you're still around. I took a look at one of your videos (and I'll watch others later). Fascinating stuff - presumably you are combining found images with drawing? All pleasantly sinister/surreal and quite 60s if you don't mind me saying.

@@petebeard Not at all, I came of age in the 60's . A mix of photography, videography, drawing, found images, collage, montage etc. Some scifi, some noir some fantastic varied styles a dark sense of humor and all short , a minute more or less. 4 years ago I woke up one morning and decided I'd make animations and what you see is the result. I downloaded at random to KZfaq so earlier work and later work are jumbled together. The most recent is at bottom "Rain". if you re interested My pal Dave aka Porter Woodrow who does the music has a video of one of his songs "Always Someplace Else ". This first time I've published to the public previously shared with group of friends so I have a certain trepidation and your response has left me feeling very positive and it is more pleasing coming from someone who's work you admire. Thank you.

Hello again, and I found myself wondering about the precise method but can find no illumination. I'm pretty certain it was on stone - certainly the earlier work. My own theory about the large format work is that they may have been created with smaller panels, similar to billboards. I'm certain that Mucha did this on some of his work. But whatever the specific method was you've got to hand it to the man. And I hope I make 96 with all my parts intact and maybe I'll retire to the Riviera too...

@@petebeard "the largest lithographc printing stone ever quarried came from Le Vigan, 230x150cm (90 x 59in). Theophile Steinlen used a comparable stone for some of his posters." Lithographic limestone - Wikipedia Web photos show large stones. Also, litho stones can be re-grained for reuse. Offset lithograpy started in 1903. So, compared to carrying a limestone litho stone on one's back computer-aided design is looking better. Hope you enjoy the Riveria. The Adriatic coastline sounds good, less expensive. Trick is, as you say, making it in one piece. Currently working with limestones, kidney. Btw Agree with Michael S. comment in the post above. 👍 👍 Since you're into music, Graham Nash's (Crosby, Stills & Nash) last concert was a fundraiser so he could buy a printing press to start his graphics company.

Hello again and for someone who considers themselves reasonably sentient I can be remarkably stupid. It never occurred to me to check about the possible size of the stones. 90 by 50 is huge by anyone's standards. Thanks for the knowledge

@@petebeard nah, u r' no stoopid ... Actually, I just had a 'duh' moment realizing that for years the poster I was looking at on the popular American sit-com "Friends" (1994-2004) was Jules Cheret's "Aux Buttles Chamout Joulets". Granted, might not mean much to a Brit. Just because a huge limestone stone was available at the time doesn't mean Cheret didn't tile his large posters. At Vintage posters "Salamandre Space Heater" 1886 weights in at 48.25"x69.25" inches. Add in registration marks and trim. Cheret being a businessman probably considered the time and pain in the derrierre of matching registration marks vs. the cost of a large stone to batch press various sized prints in one run thinking "Would someone hurry up and invent the chromolithgraphy sheet fed offset drum roller." Plus, horizontally tiling his posters would have allowed him 'mix & match'* his designs since as his compositions were becoming more standardized it would've sped up production. 😁 * similiar to the tri-partitioned children's books. Ps, yet mo' digression could be Cheret's use of warm/cool colors was influenced by Michel-Eugene Chevreul's color theory book "The Law of Simultaneous Color Contrast", red/green, blue/orange, based on his work with textile pigments. Perhaps, briefly explain four color CMYK halftone printing as you did the overlaying use of stones as it added another dimension to your already very well made presentations. Or, any other aspects of making illustrations. Some commenters seem to response to that.

Just search for him by name. But be careful - there was one I thought looked good until I realised it was a German edition. On the other hand you may be fluent in German...

hello and yes there is some similarity. I don't know if you know but Lautrec was about 10 years younger than Cheret and like others was influenced by him. But he went on to be much less conventional and less ornate in his approach.
