Despite, broadly speaking, not being particularly drawn to the type of posters and art of that time I chose this episode, simply to try and conquer prejudice (although this is probably an exaggerated way of putting it). And your usual meticulous way of presenting did make me aware of some very interesting artists and their works. Thank you

An outstanding episode and particularly engaging since all four artists and their work are equally enthralling. Especially Stampa and Brightwell, but they would be personal favourites, in no way diminishing the other two who are equally admirable. A delightful episode, thank you.

I agree with all the complimentary comments regarding Mr. Briggs and Pete Beard's video. In a small degree of separation, I was once in Briggs' Westport, CT studio and home. At the time, it was owned by Ed Vebell, another famous illustrator. Ed, who had an excellent business renting the costumes he'd acquired, most during WWII, was lending me props and uniforms for an illustrated edition of The Three Musketeers. I think Briggs moved to a new place in Westport after he sold his house to my friend. There was a story on his latest studio in a magazine (I think I saw a reprint of it), and it was nothing like the one I visited.
@petebeard7 сағат бұрын
Thanks a lot for your comment and appreciation of this video and Briggs's remarkable output. Being English I'm sure a lot of the ethos of his very American work is beyond me, but he seems to have encapsulated the mid century USA and its attitudes so very well.

What a wonderful collection! Leonnec was a rather amusing cheeky fellow. Carlson seems to me to have squandered his greatest achievement by not producing more of the style he adopted for Elizabeth Blanch-Wade. But maybe there wasn’t enough opportunity there to explore his own creativity.
@petebeard7 сағат бұрын
Thanks again for another favourable comment. I've found many of the subjects I've covered have had what seem to be rather odd or unfathomable career moves, and sadly there just isn't enough awritten about them to be able to find out the whys and wherefores.

Thanks a lot for this recommendation. I had never heard of him or seen his work, but it looks like he could well make a suitable video subject. There has to be enough information and visual material to work with but if there is I'll add him to the list. Thanks again.

Given the number of tools available on computers nowadays, do you think the Art of Illustration will make come back?
@petebeard7 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the question, but my answer will have to be rather vaugue. Will it ever have a renaissance that equals the golden age of the early 20th century? Highly unlikely, given the dominance of photography in the media. I can't remember the last time I saw an illustrated magazine or poster. Illustrated books have survived though, and there are some out there who are carrying on with traditional methods I'm glad to say. But digital processes make it so much easier and the quality in general goes down year on year, it seems to me.

Спасибо, Pete! I found this video yesterday, but I was too exhausted to watch it properly. Your material is just like a good tea you just received in parcel from the Chinese comrades - it requires a certain mood. For Italian pencil and pen maker Presbitero, Mauzan created their creepy "pencil hair man" brand mark. It, too, made the leap from the printed page, first as a point-of-sale piece and later a 3m high figure attached to a publicity truck.
