I say this as an unbiased Steelers fan who had no rooting interest in this game, Pittsburgh was terrible during this season. The Bucs defense was so great in 1999 that they really didn’t need a top flight quarterback or an elite offense, just a run of the mill competent offense would have done the job. The Bucs defense played as close to a perfect game as possible, forced three turnovers and held one of the best offenses in NFL history to 11 points, with the Tampa Bay offense gifting the Rams a safety, so essentially they only conceded 9 points. Everyone remembers the Bert Emanuel play but if you dig a little deeper, the true story is revealed. In this game, FOUR TIMES the Bucs offense got to start a drive in the Rams side of the field because of how their defense was able to force turnovers and shut down the Greatest Show on Turf. And the results of those four drives? Field goal, punt, punt, interception. To not be able to punch it into the end zone one time is shameful with that kind of advantage in field position. Shaun King was dreadful. One of the most anemic offensive performances ever in a conference championship game. If I’m a Bucs defensive player at the end of that game, I’m absolutely livid at the offense.

That interception at 8:32 was absolutely horrendous. Shaun King was just not at the level of an NFL starting quarterback. With that brilliant defense along with Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott running the ball, if Tampa Bay had at least a serviceable quarterback who could come in and manage the game (Mark Brunell, Brian Griese, Vinny Testaverde, etc.) then they win the Super Bowl that year.

Emanuel did have control of the ball, but the rules at the time stated that if the ball scrapes or touches the turf, it's ruled a no-catch. It was pretty close. Even if said player appears to maintain possession. They did eventually alter the rule after the season.
@baxter1896
@baxter1896 2 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing: At the time the rules were that if the ball hits the ground, it's automatically incomplete. Thats why they changed the rules in the off-season. If the ruling by the official was wrong, then there would be no need to change the rule. Madden (RIP) probably made it more controversial then it should have been made by incorrectly saying it was a completion (which the next year it would be).

@AshleySmith19912
@AshleySmith19912 2 жыл бұрын
I do agree to an extent, whether the Bucs scored a touchdown or not is a completely different argument, however by that point, the Rams defense was completely exhausted and were on their heels, so if Tampa Bay could’ve gotten the ball into a 1st and goal situation, they maybe could’ve punched it in with Alstott. I had no faith in Shaun King being able to throw a touchdown pass in this situation, I believe he had thrown a grand total of 7 all season.

It's interesting how much the officials have been a part of the story for some of the more epic games of the last 20+ years. Emmanual clearly caught it but Bucs fans act like they were going to score…. Not a fan of either team and the Bucs offense was putrid, were gifted great field position and created turnovers and the offense couldn’t do 💩…. Still had like 20 yds to go if the catch was upheld, Bucs didn’t show any evidence they could punch it in.

I'm a Bucs fan from way back (born and raised in Tampa Bay 1971)..... That being said this is still my 2nd favorite Bucs game of all time, my 1st being the whooping they put on the Eagles to advance to the Super Bowl; the Super Bowl is my 3rd favorite game. This one was just insane, #1 Defense vs. the #1 Offense... The Greatest Show on Turf slowed down to 11 points.... Just a brilliant game...As far as that Emanuel catch, it was good.... The powers that be didn't want two defensive power houses in the Super Bowl, a 6 point Super Bowl would have messed up the ratings for sure.

Brooks cracked Holts ribs on one of those hits. He was spitting up blood. Props to him tho he came back and played. One thing i see watching this game is not only the rule change for the Bert catch but also the delay of game. You get a full second almost two now a days to snap it after the clock hits zero.

This outcome may have ended up helping the Colts in the long run as well, as Tony Dungy eventually got fired by the Bucs two years later after being unable to reach a Super Bowl, allowing Irsay to scoop him up after firing Jim Mora. Dungy will always be my favorite coach of all time.

I was driving across the country during this game and listening on the radio. I remember the broadcasters saying it was a catch then they were shocked when they called it incomplete. I didn't see the play so I had no idea how it looked. The broadcasters were very vocal about the bad call on the broadcast.

Most people forget the 99 rams had an easy regular season schedule. Only faced one team with a winning record, (titans who beat them 24-21), which was the easiest schedule for a team since 1971. Still a great team, though.

This Bucs defense put forth one of the greatest team defensive performances in NFL playoff history, holding one of the greatest offensive teams in NFL history to 11 points on there home field and greatest element to perform there juggernaut offense (Turf). A shame that there offense couldn't even spot them a TD. On a sidenote, Marshall Faulk had one of the greatest but rather forgotten RB seasons in NFL history in 99, becoming the 2nd player in NFL history to rush and receive for over 1,000 yards (Only 3 RB's have ever done this, Roger Craig, Faulk and Mccaffrey). I would put Faulk's Ram 3 year stretch (99-01) up against any all-time RB's greatest 3 year stretch. He was IMO the best overall player in the NFL during this 3 year run.
