Great in depth review. I bought the Samyang a few years ago and am never regretted it. Even wide open it meets my needs. That it is very small, light and cost effective...is the icing on the cake!

Always enjoy your reviews! IMO SY 1.8 is the best all rounder lens especially if you want to travel light and have limited budget. The biggest issue aside from the price of the GM was that it was simply too heavy to pair with the A7C as a daily. Which is why I opted for the SY 1.8 and is now glued to my A7C. What I realized later though is that if you own a A7iii or A7VI you might as well go for the GM 1.4 if you have the budget for it. Since the A7iii and A7VI is 100 grams heavier suddenly the 24 1.4GM doesn't feel heavy anymore. So the weight balances out and utility wise having a 1.4 is amazing.

I really wouldn't mind paying for the GM if it was that much better. In all of my tests it was so close to the SY 1.8. You really can't justify paying that price for the GM. There is no clear advantage of that lens. I'm so happy with my SY 1.8.

Yeah it looked like the Sony 24mm, f2.8, G was the one Charlie popped into the video,(photo), towards the end. The more fair comparison would be to put it against the Samyang 24mm, f2.8, and consider the two compact options.

it was a really good lens for the short time that I had it- was a bit heavy though- but I liked it a lot. image quality and lens performance were excellent... however, there are two really huge problems with it: first, is that the mounting plate is screwed into four small plastic posts- this is all that is holding your lens onto your camera. so let's say you trip and fall and you bang your lens on the ground (which I've done with my sony 28-70mm kit lens- but it still works perfectly), or if your tripod with your camera falls, as mine did, the plastic posts will simply break on impact and your lens will just snap straight off your camera. the second problem is trying to get that repaired. it will not go well because repair shops cannot get any parts for your lens, and Samyang has only one location in the US to fix the things covered by their warranty... so ultimately you'll learn that you've bought a $1000 disposable lens... a real shame because I would have easily replaced it with another. Instead, though I'm gonna miss the 4mm on the wide end, I got the Tamron.

I bought Samyang 24mm f1.8 last week and a Moza mini-p gimbal. Tried setting up my A7III with the Samyang, but the eyecup gets caught at the roll bar of the gimbal. I have seen on YT the Samyang 2.8 on A7iii fit properly. I am in a dilemma. Option 1: return the 24mm f1.8 and get f2.8 to use with the Moza mini-p. Option 2: retrun the mini-p and get a Weebill S to use with the f1.8? Opt 1 saves me about $500. Opt 2 gives me a superior lens and gimbal.

I will buy this Samyang. While I can respect people who are pro get the GM lens, for me as an amateur shooter the Samyang in Norway costs about 30% of the price of the GM. I am very happy with the 85mm Samyang F1.4 which I bought new, its what I mainly use when taking pictures of the car, my kid etc. But then the 50mm samyang I dont take out of my bag :P So it's never used, that one I did buy used for ~50% of its new price.. So what I really need is something opposite of the 85mm, I believe maybe 24mm is the best then... Plan on upping my camera game with some ND filters, long exposure, filters for night etc. But still just for hobby. Using the Sony A7C.

@@CharlieVN yes, also the Sony one in 85mm should be good and compact (and affordable). It is quite amazing though to see that todays lenses in "mid end" in many ways can compete against old lenses which had double the cost :P Of course you dont get the same tank-experience in build quality, but Ive seen several people compare samyang, tamron and todays Sony budget alternatives to the early zeiss series. I do however know that the 50mm samyang I have while its good at photos, the AF for video cant keep up with the Sonys or the latest samyangs. However the 85mm I think is better than the 50mm on focus, but I just use it for photo :-) The 24mm I think could be used more for video though, but it looks like its not got as noisy AF and less focus breathing.

sure, it could work, but it's kind of tight for both and at the same time, pretty wide for a standard lens. 10:48 the vlogging test, you can get a feel of how wide it will be.

@method341
@method341 2 жыл бұрын
When you say AF breathing that's only if you're moving around or showing products right? If you're just sitting in your chair and just using gestures with your hands and talking, this AF breathing should be minimised? If you could do a 'talking head' setup with your A7 iii it would be much appreciated as I'm looking to purchase one.
@CharlieVN
@CharlieVN 2 жыл бұрын
yes, if you're doing product showcase a lot, it might be bothersome..... but at the end of the day, likely nobody cares, Jane ASMR has 14M subs on her channel and the lens she uses has focus breathing 😅. For my current talking head videos, I use the samyang 35f1.8 (has focus breathing) and have used the A7iii as A roll on some of my videos. It's borderline indistinguishable for these types of videos. The biggest flaw is that I have the tendency to run into the 30 minute record limit, these video recordings often get to the hour mark, then I trim the crap out of them..... I hate starting and stopping, it breaks my flow, A7c has unlimited record times in case you want a full frame setup.

Can u please share a photo or video which shows difference between 35mm 2.8 vs 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 2.8 vs 50mm 1.8?? Please sir I am very much confused about getting prime lens of 35mm, 85mm and 20mm (may be) vs Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 and we all now the hustle to change the primes (since i have only one camera body) instead of the hustle if there is a significant difference in lowlight or bokeh i am willing to take that pain. Btw do u have any personal suggestion on this selections pls help regarding this. Thank you.
@CharlieVN
@CharlieVN 2 жыл бұрын
for my personal pleasure and travels, I use primes mostly because I'm more about what I can get rather than what I'm missing, I dont focus on negatives. As for my youtube channel, personal landscapes, timelapses, or if I'm on a mission to make a high quality video, I tend to use zooms and dont shy away from them at all. Most of my B-roll on this channel is with the use of a zoom. I do plan on doing focal length comparison video, but it's turning out a little more complicated than I initially imagined.

@@CharlieVN i am into travel videos. Aspiring to be a 'youtube cinematographer' what do u recommand 3 primes or Tamron 28-75mm for run and gun? Is 2.8 and 1.8 a huge difference in bokeh and low light?
@OlavAlexanderMjelde
@OlavAlexanderMjelde 2 жыл бұрын
@@agnib_das it depends, it's not just about F-stop but also how far you are from subject. So for instance with 50mm f1.8, its much harder to get bookeh vs 85mm f1.4, but it is not just because of the f1.4 vs 1.8. The thing is that with the 85mm you get really close to the subject, so then the background is very easy to blur out. On a full frame the best portrait up close will be the 85mm, same with shooting cars I think. However its hard to frame stuff at 85mm, if you dont have _a lot_ of space :P And especially indoor shots might be tricky! It also might not be able to focus that close for video etc. Also if you pan around a subject at 85mm, the background will move very little, where as paning around subject with 24mm it makes the background almost seem like a "parralax" effect, where it gives a depth in the movement. What is best? I would say it depends... So like a sport video with 85mm shot from the side, it will look very boring, since it will look calm/relaxed. Where as if you are shooting an ad or interviewing someone, or maybe shooting a flying bird or something, then the 85mm might be better. I am by no means an expert, I just have experience with what I have bought and also looked at a lot of reviews of lenses, some of them comparing how different "zooms" make the same scenes look. But be aware as in this video demonstrated: a wide angle can make your subjects look strange/distorted.

@CharlieVN
@CharlieVN 2 жыл бұрын
most definitely, the tripod I was using is similarly sized to the gorillapod. In some videos, I have used the GM and gorillapod, just keep in mind for longer sessions, it does get heavy, a 200-300g lens makes a big difference in weight when your arms stretched out...... aside from that, the GM is amazing.

Solid comparison. I'm a big fan of the Samyangs; I've got the 35 and 75 1.8 lenses and love them both; they strike a great balance between performance, cost and size. As for the GM, my suggestion would be to keep the 24 1.8, sell the GM and use the money to buy the 20mm 1.8 G instead. You'd get 90-95% of the 24 GM's performance and pocket some extra cash to boot!

@@CharlieVN Definitely won't have any af issues with the Sony 20. I'd say it's the best lens I've ever owned and in fact chose it over the 24 GM after testing both for two reasons... 1, it was way cheaper and 2, it's significantly smaller + lighter... Its actually smaller & lighter than the Sigma 16 1.4 APSC lens I had too!
