This is our reaction to Episode 2 of The Elusive Samurai!
Set between the late Kamakura and early Muromachi periods, during the Kenmu Restoration, the story follows the tale of Hojo Tokiyuki, a boy on the run after his family is overthrown by Ashikaga Takauji. According to the Taiheiki, Godaiin defected to Yoshisada Nitta's side, but because of his cowardice, even the samurai on Nitta's side hated him. Yoshisada Nitta decided to execute Godaiin in order to quell the antipathy among the people of Kamakura that had arisen due to the execution of Hojo's infant child. However, Godaiin managed to escape and was reduced to a beggar. However, his despicable deeds were well known, and it is said that no one gave him alms and that he starved to death after a while. By the way, it is said that all those who saw Kunitoki being taken away and those who learned what happened to him could not help but shed tears.

@@LegitLord2000 All that is said is that there is such a description in the war tale ``Taiheiki,'' which is said to have been compiled around 1370. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's a historical fact. Therefore, there is a possibility that Godaiin was defeated by Tokiyuki like in the anime.

@@koharuchan426 Yeah, the manga still sticks to the main known historical facts while playing around with the more vaguely debated ones. I still love what they did to Yorishige's eldest son. he was so obscure, barely mentioned in the history books it became his super power. XD

Localizers fucked up, It's not "known as the most brutal warlord", but Immoral warlord. He was quickly shunned because he was so fast in snitching a close family member, nobody was willing to give him trust. Supposed to die of starvation as a beggar.

The translation of Kiyoko's death scene was also wrong. The translator knew very little Japanese, and Google-translated the words he saw.

The whole sub vs dub debate is really reversing nowadays. Dubs just keep getting better and actually have groups of professionals taking time to make the dialogue sound natural, while subs are getting increasingly worse and just take me out of the show. There are people who prefer subs because they want to watch the show "unfiltered" and as it is intended, but if they don't speak Japanese, their viewing experience is bottlenecked by the skill of the person who wrote the subtitles. Maybe I'm just imagining it and noticing more errors because I'm getting older, but I keep seeing typos or weird translation mistakes that I notice without even speaking Japanese myself, like that brutal warlord thing. How such a mistake can even happen is beyond me, because obviously this guy did not become an infamous warlord - he died like two scenes later. Before Crunchyroll, we at least had fansubs and there were some trustworthy groups. Often, there were multiple groups doing the same anime. So if you wanted an accurate and more conservative translation, you'd pick one group, but if you wanted something more loosely translated that sound more natural in English, you'd pick something like Commie subs.

Not gonna lie, Yorishige is not very funny, BUT he does a good job at distracting an 8-year-old from the reality he needs to face with his weird antics. Too many of the anime watchers seem to forget Tokiyuki is 8-years-old

Fun fact :- The Elusive samurai manga won 69th shogakukan award this year along with frieren (an award given to the best manga series yearly) and also this particular award previously won by call of the night, chainsaw man, love is war, komi can't communicate, dr stone and more too.... So story will be top tier through and through and this will be anime of the season easily..... Another fact is Author of elusive samurai Yusei Matsui is also the author of Assassination classroom....

8:05 No no no. He is Hojo Tokiyuki. He is the rightful heir, a pureblooded noble. His brother who Godaiin betrayed and got killed was the child of a concubine so he was less likely to be the heir despite iirc being the older child. Just clarifying that the main character who we follow if Hojo *Tokiyuki* he is not lying to these allies he's just met.

The parents of the brothers fucked up. Not only did the little one believe his uncle, the older one went up to some randoms and revealed his identity in the aftermath. The parents should have taught them to be wary of EVERYONE if they're ever in such a bad situation. Their family literally fell due to betrayal. You'd think their parents would beat into their heads what the promise of power can do.

This anime starting to piss me off lol. The one guy is not funny, he’s just annoying. Kids crying and we could have had a good moment but no they decide to interrupt it with random annoying dude with light all around him for no reason. Mc better eventually learn how to fight too

I'm neutral on that first take, but did you not watch this episode it's pretty obvious this is his fighting style he's physically weak but obviously strong enough to behead someone.

If we had that "good take" you speak about, then this anime would have been just like every other anime there is-- dark and dramatic. This anime being based off of a rather brutal period and all, personally, I find it impressive that they managed to balance it so that it never gets to feel too dark or dramatic. It's true that Yorishige isn't really that funny, but he does a good job of distracting an 8-year-old child who just lost his entire country through betrayal. Sorry, I guess, if this isn't the shounen that you'd want to watch.

北条時行の人生を書くにあたって無理やりなギャグを使ってでも明るくしなければ少年誌に載せられなかったのではないかと思います。これは少年ジャンプで連載されている歴史漫画です。十代の少年が主な読者層として想定されています。もし北条時行について気になるなら調べてみても良いかもしれません。きっと後悔します。EDの最初に出てくる現在にも残されているお墓がそれを暗示してます。

Pretty sure his unfunnyness & drama ruining moments were intentional. He appears to mostly be there to make sure the characters don’t dwell to much in the despair of the situation. And the author apparently confirmed that he aims to not be 100% accurate with history with those series, so I think your having the wrong expectations with this series.
