Choose the best audio interface for your recording needs - with this complete checklist. Your choice of audio interface for your home recording studio is crucial. An audio interface is the device at the heart of your home studio. It will have a direct impact on all the recordings you make.

Here is a link to the USB lightning camera connection kit I use in this video (affiliate link to amazon) amzn.to/2ZYkC2c *
In this video, my checklist of what to consider when you want to choose the best audio interface for your studio covers:
1. comparability with the your computer
2. what kind of computer you want to record on - and also what to do if you want to record without a computer
3. connection types, including USB, thunderbolt or firewire
4. a standalone recorder vs an audio interface
5. the number of simultaneous inputs you need, depending on what you want to record at the same time
6. any software packages included with the audio interface
7. number and types of audio outputs (as well as inputs)
8. MIDI input and output
9. digital input and output

Wow I always love your videos😊. So greatly informative and simplistic at the same time. I mean you are a brilliant sharp lady who boils down things into an easy to understand yet complete overview. I love it when your videos pop up because I subscribed (don't remember when) and it is just so relevant. I can say that with conviction, because I already did a lot of work researching and learning for quite some years but unless one buys and uses the equipment, the knowledge stays quite abstract. You understand how to communicate expert knowledge to the non expert user in a way that makes sense and is user friendly and relevant. SOme "experts" don't understand this and rather just expect others to be at their level. Bless ya 👍 I had actually recently been considering the Zoom H6 but since I record at home with a piano and one or several microphones, perhaps it is better I get the Steinberg UR22C. Wouldn't you say so? I don't think I will need to record with the H6 microphones: THey are probably for people on the go. I know you are focused on the present and that this is like 1 year old. Anyway...

Hi Jane, thanks for all of the great help on your KZfaq channel.It might be worth a video giving some troubleshooting advice in relation to using audio interfaces with Windows based desktop PC's. I've had problems recently getting an audio interface to work reliably on my system. (I won't mention the brand just in case I'm not allowed to do that!). From what I have seen on the web though quite a few people are having similar problems with the same brand.

Hi Jane, Tks for your very informative easy to follow videos which I have followed for sometime, now I feel now ready to take the home recording plunge. I bought the Behringer usb mixer mainly to use with my marshal amp for gigging, which worked very well, I bought the Behringer usb also with the intention of making some home music recordings (just acoustic guitar and vocals) but had some serious problems in getting the Behringer to work, despite following you very good podcast directions. I am done with Behringer products FOREVER ! My gigging equipment includes the Sure 57 and the 58 beta dynamic mics which I wish to use to record with, however I have heard that the insensitivity of dynamics make them not ideal for all interfaces. I have therefore chosen to buy an interface with a high gain (70db) the Presonus studio 26c.However, I have heard a couple of podcasts (not all) mention some problem with high noise and wondered if this might be due to the c class usb outputs (my computer has only a class usb ).Before spending my limited funds, I would appreciate any comments you may have. tks

Thank You for those advices, and if I may, the number of audio inputs is not necessarily dictated by the number of direct takes you can make (in a Home studio it's rarely more than two) but by the number of lines you need to connect all you gear. For example a Keyboard, a guitar and bass guitar, a mic for the voice, acoustic guitar, percussion… without having to adjust, disconnect and reconnect stuff all the time. So, 4 lines inputs + 2 mic inputs + MIDI seems a minimum to me for music recording, and the price tag is not that different…

Great video! Wondering if you can help with this - I have always found it challenging to get adequate volume for any of my keyboards (Yamaha P125 digital piano or Korg EK-50 using L/R line outs into line ins on audio interface, or Casiotone CTS-1 using headphone out split into 2 line ins on audio interface) - with the interface going to my iPad or iPhone. I've had the same issue with 2 audio interfaces: Roland GO:Mixer Pro, as well as an Alesis Multimix 4 mixer/AI combo. Using the no gain line ins on the Alesis, I have to max volume on my keyboard, max volume on my line in channels, and almost max volume on the overall mix out to get a barely usable audio out signal on my device (which I usually then have to boost after the fact). If I set the XLR/Line in channels to line and use the extra amp gain available on those, I get much more volume, but the sound quality seems to suffer. Is this likely a case of a lesser quality interface and(or) interface amps? Wondering if the Focusrite would be any different . . . Thanks so much, and keep the great videos coming! (Subscribed)

Hi, great explanation and excellent that you took the Zoom into the comparison for offline recording. That may be an eye opener for some. In the video I saw that the Focusrite has balanced and unbalanced outputs. I have been looking at monitor speakers lately and some take only balanced I believe. Not all audio interfaces provide this. Is that something to take into consideration when you buy an audio interface or is there a way around?

Thanks for everything Jane. I am simply trying to broadcast live (with vocal and digital piano) and will probably go for Soundcraft Notepad 8fx. My question though regards a mic. Can I use a directional condenser for my vocal whilst output coming out of downward facing speakers on the piano, or would they interfere? I would also need the mic about 2 foot away so that I can see my tablet for music. Will a condenser manage that OK? Really appreciate any advice before I buy a mic.

I learn a little with each video, but I'm still trying to figure out how the MIDI will work. I guess it takes midi from the keyboard and sends it to the computer (not audio per se). And again, the computer can send it back out through the audio interface to your keyboard or whatever.

Hy Jane, thanks a lot for your videos! Your explanations are really helpful. I am an absolute beginner and really ne explanations like a 3 year old. Maybe you can help me out with a couple of questions. Those are somehow related to this video because I really wonder how mane channels would be good to solve the following problem. Most of the videos or tutorials I find are about recording vocals and guitar, maybe keyboard. If it's about drum sets it already gets complex. I mainly do live flute solo programs or programs flute with piano / harpsichord,- that seems not too complicated to me to record this, except that it's complicated ;-) But what about chamber music,- quartet / quintet with woodwind or string instruments and a piano? I've thought of recording the overall sound with a stereo pair (almost like the auditory impression in a concert) and possibly picking up the individual instruments as a support individually. If that makes sense: for just 2 Instruments, like flute and piano it doesn't look too complicated. But how about (Piano-) Quintett or Quartett? Did you do already a video which is related to this?

Wow, you really seem to have a terrific handle on this! Here's my situation: I'm a pro vocalist and have been recording my vocals via overdubbing on backing tracks from Karaoke Version (which uses GREAT studio players). For a year I was able to record/overdub and mix via Audacity. It hasn't worked for a couple of months! I would like to BYPASS Audacity if possible and find another way to use my backing tracks for vocal overdubs, and then exporting those to my outlets such as Soundcloud, KZfaq, etc. Would using one of the interface units (with software) your video (e.g. Pro Tools, Studio One, etc) work for this issue, and would I be able to import the backing tracks and overdub as I did on Audacity and then convert to .wav or similar format to export for distribution via Soundcloud, etc. ? I'm dead in the water at the moment and would greatly appreciate some help! Thanks so mich!

Question (I hope someone can answer it): The setup I’m looking at is Roland Fantom as a controller for hardware synths and separately for software stuff Maschine+ and Native Instruments S88. Since I can have 8 different synths on separate zones in the Fantom, I’m guessing it’s enough for me to drive MIDI from hardware synths via MIDI hub into the Fantom and out into the computer via a MIDI interface. Then audio into the interface and into speakers (probably an interface bi enought for six externat gear) How do I then connect the Maschine+/S88?

I just read on your site that I could use a headphone output to record the sound, is that right? (that wouldn't be a problem, it has 2 headphone outputs) I also noticed you said I'd need another cable in order to make this work: Stereo to 2x mono, am I correct? Hello, thank you for sharing your instructive video. I’ve recording with iRig Mic Studio for a while now,. I wanted to record my singing voice clearly, however, it mainly picks up breathing sounds & other noises rather than my voice. It seems like it’s suitable for recording sounds of instruments though. So I bought RODE NT2-A in hope that would record my voice better, but the store I consulted gave me TASCAM MiNiStudio for live programs while I wanted a device to record my voice & instruments for my KZfaq videos. I’m such a low tech, so I had no idea why the TASCAM I’ve got didn’t work . I want to record my voice clearly with my RODE NT2-A. I was wondering the red audio interface you introduce here will work ? And do I have to have a mixer ? Sorry my question is so amateur. I was trained my opera singers, so I have enough volume of my voice, but my iRig Mic microphone doesn’t pick up my voice much😞💦I’m hoping I can do a decent recording. Hope I can get a reply from you or other people who saw this comment 😢 I have no friends or acquaintances who’s familiar with recording devices 😭😭😭💦

I like to sing and record karaoke. So a few months ago I purchased a MOTU M4 which has two audio line-ins in the back. Come to find out, to my great dismay, you cannot take audio out from a cell phone or tablet and plug it in the back there: they are LINE LEVEL inputs needing a much higher voltage than what headphone jacks put out! Since I already have a Mackie ProFX3 USB mixer, the MOTU M4 was useless for my purposes! So I had to return it. Live and learn! These Audio Interface makers ought to put in BOLD PRINT that the audio ins, are ONLY for Line Level inputs! Or if they are smart, they'd start designing and manufacturing interfaces that also have Stereo Audio in like mixers do. But I suspect that the USB power from a laptop just won't be adequate to amplify the signal. Nope; for karaoke, these USB audio interfaces are no use! :)

@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, do not turn on the 48v power! Those are both dynamic mics, and so do not need power, and it may even damage them. Becuase they are dynamic, you need to get them close to the audio signal. If you want more sensitivity then you would need a condenser mic instead. www.musicrepo.com/recording-microphone-types/

The H5 is a portable recorder that also functions as an audio interface in that you can record direct onto your computer when you hook it up. However, it does not appear to have any audio outputs other than a headphone port. So you could need a mini TRS to twin TS breakout cable - you would not use TRS plugged into your monitors as this is not going to be a balance connection. Unless your monitors are more like consumer grade with a mini aux in? In which case you should be able to connect from Zoom to monitors using an aux cable. If you are not hearing anything then check the cable, and then maybe raise support ticket with the manufacturer of the monitors. Or maybe contact Zoom about connections. You may do better recording onto your mac and then just using the mac for playback rather than the Zoom. If you are doing that, then you really need to contact the manufacturer of monitors for assistance with why you are getting this noise

Hi, I'm confused about the headphones Inputs, because you can buy a 2 way in 1 adaptor for £1 and connect 2 headphones there... what's the difference of having to separate headphone plug ins? Thanks
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 5 жыл бұрын
With 2 separate headphone outputs, each has individual volume control, and you could route different tracks to each headphone out I guess

6:06 Since it's a Mixer, it doesn't mean you can record four sounds into four individual tracks on your DAW.

What's a good interface to buy for use with Linux ?
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 5 жыл бұрын
@marvinbanjo I do not have Linux, or know much about it! Here is a link that is not particularly recent, but does have a list of 'safe' interfaces to use with Linux. Quite a few Focusrite interfaces on there ... I have a Focusrite 2i4, so can vouch that if Focusrite interfaces work with Linux, that would be a good choice. I hope that helps ... even if I cannot give you a definitive answer wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/hardware_support

I need a good interface, not an expensive one. What do you recommend?
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 4 жыл бұрын
I can really recommend the Focusrite Scarlett Studio range, as I own a 2i4. If you are on a tight budget, look for a second hand one.

I would buy a mixer of some description - preferably one that allowed you to record separate instruments on separate tracks in your recording software. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZOgjdui3ZevgIk.html

Why did you not include Presonus audiobox96 also 2 mic in or 2 guitar in inputs with arguably better preamps than focusrite for around a similar price.
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for mentioning that. As I own a Focusrite, that is the one I feel I can recommend. However, I agree the Presonus Audiobox is very well reviewed and liked. This video isn't really trying to recommend a specific interface, rather it is trying to go through the questions you need to ask yourself if you are about to make a purchase ...

To keep things compatible with your iPad, look for the expression “class compliant” in the description. Otherwise it will not work.

@@MusicRepo class compliant means : I am a well behaved device, I can do what you expect from my class therefore no driver is needed. But I will do nothing more. Some audio interfaces can do more when you install a driver on an operating system where that’s possible. E.g. motu m.series will have even lower latency and other functionality like loopback when a driver is installed. Other brands may be similar.
