Seamus Heaney reading his translation of Beowulf is pure poetry…literally. (lol) And now for something completely different…James Marsters reading Dresden. Plus the narrators you named all of whom really are exceptionally good. This is a much needed video. Thank you!

The whole thing about Steven Pacey being a one man cast is so true. I am up to Red country in the First law series and this man's narration is utterly amazing. He may be the best narrator I have heard.

Truly nothing beats a Neil Gaiman narration, SO magical!! The only other book that has come close to that vibe is The Wickwire Watch by Jacquelyn Hagen, would highly recommend that to you! And I personally also really love the Raven Cycle audiobooks 🤩

I have been wanting to read Skulduggery Pleasant for years and never thought of trying the audio. I just tried the sample and it’s so good! I love Steve West’s narration of Strange the Dreamer! I also love his narration for The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. It’s one of those series I continuously revisit on audio.

I love audiobook suggestions. The first two books of The Thursday Murder Club series must be experienced by audio. Narrator is amazing and has great comedic timing. For whatever reason the narrator changed for the third book and while fine, the performance doesn’t have the same magic. Anything by January LaVoy or Julia Whelan is also going to be a great audio experience.

Neil Gaiman and Stephen Fry could basically read me anything and I would be enthralled. And since you talked about Good Omens - the audio production for The Sandman is ridiculous. So good and very atmospheric. The series that always comes to mind when I think about books being elevated as audiobooks is The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. I like the books, but I doubt I would have kept up with them if not for the audiobook versions. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith reads them. It is magical to me. So smooth and with all the accents and voices for the characters!

I almost put Sandman on this list but do think in the case of that one it’s almost more an adaptation cuz they do mess around a lot with the order and have to ad things in you make up for the lack of visuals

I screamed when you said Andy Serkis’s LOTR’s. The power his has- I hated Boromir, I adore the movies- collect different editions of the books and figures. But I couldn’t read the books, the sample for the fellowship is of Boromir’s death- and I was shaking balling crying - that’s the power Andy has. He made me feel for a character I hated. I’m half way through fellowship now and because he does the actors voices- it feels like extended, extended editions of the movies. My recommendation- not a great book, it’s smut- but the narrator was so damn good, I couldn’t tell how much I hated the main character until it was pointed out all the issues she had and then I was like - oh damn.. she good… - A touch of darkness, narration by Meg Sylvan- her Hades.. god damn. I was so pissed she didn’t do Hade’s in his book- A game of fate, I couldn’t stand the narrator of his book. Not sexy at all. But Meg for A touch of darkness.. took a 4 out of 10 to a 7 for me.. If ever in the mood for a smutty Hades and Persephone re telling. I recommend it. 😅

I really liked the audiobooks for book of the new sun by jonathon Davis. There’s just a dreamy haze to his performance that just really captures the vibe of the book so well! The second is seven pillars of wisdom by Roy McMillan. He sounds super similar to Peter O’Toole so absolutely perfect for narrating Lawrence of Arabia!

If you like memoirs read by the author, and other people involved - and I'll take a leap that you likely already like the Princess Bride - then I very much recommend Cary Elwes audiobook "As You Wish - inconceivable tales from the making of the princess bride". The book has little annotations of thoughts by other cast and crew and most of them showed up to the recording booth to read their parts, and what's more it's just full of lovely anecdotes that'll put layers into the movie and make it even more endearing.

I’ve tried Carry on several times, but it didn’t work. When I tried the audiobook, it was just amazing. As you said, it hits all the right spots with the tone, British humour, and all the book is about. I think the narrator perfectly adds the element of parody, prolonging the same experience with the second and the third book, which I found lacking compared to the first. Discworld audiobooks are also excellent, but the older version.

Yes, absolutely: memoirs and autobiographical works read by the author are very often much better as audiobooks. I listened to Skullduggery Pleasant and didn't like it enough to continue with the series, but if I did, it would definitely be in audio form. I could list lots of books that I think are best experienced as audiobooks (as well as some that aren't), but I'll limit myself to one: the works of P.G. Wodehouse, especially his Jeeves & Wooster books, work well on audio, especially the versions read by Jonathan Cecil.

So the narrator for Skullduggery Pleasant is Rupert Degas, and he is up there with Stephen Pacey for me. Rupert Degas did the UK editions for Kingkiller Chronicle which my friend turned me on to. I know Nick Podehl is super-beloved. I just can't. Rupert's version is on another level. I think he interprets some things wrong about the setting. Like all the Caeldish characters are given thick Scottish accents. And he pronounces some names differently. But I don't care. His voice is rich, autumnal, and resonant. It's made for poetry. His Elodin is pure magic.

Okay so I knew the UK narrator was different and had always vaguely wished I could listen to that version cuz I don’t like the U.S. one at all but getting this news spurred me into action and I’m happy to report I’m currently listening to the UK version and am so very happy - thank you
