Him being a catholic shows in the character's names, most of them are very obscure saints names, a kind of private joke that only catholics notice.

I don't know what to say to any of this besides: I love Carry On. I could talk about the way ALL KINDS of different traumas were handled in these books. abandonment, self loathing, parental abuse...

I agree that way of kings is not as good as people say. Totally agree so many dumb things happened in it, bad pacing, and I didn’t like the characters. People don’t talk about it’s flaws and it’s so weird.

Ivanhoe has a lot of fun workmanship details, that were absolutely new and revolutionary for its time. (1820.) Like change of narrative perspective between chapters, fake old-timey language to simulate a historical feel, double-layered characters, sympathetic villains... There's one scene that ends in a cliffhanger when suddenly trumpets blare: then the story loops back and narrates the experience of another character until - again - the scene is cut of by the blaring trumpet: and finally a third time. Knitting these three narratives together to a point where you as a reader realise that they are taking place in or around the same castle, at exactly the same time. It's neat, and it hardly feels dated or archaic at all. Edgar Allan Poe. Almost nobody need to read all of Poe, but if you're into fantasy or horror you should read at least some of the short stories. They're weird. Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. Have not aged gracefully, at all. Awful purple prose and weird victorian preachiness in an ugly marriage: it's a really hard read, but not rewarding your efforts in any way shape or form. If somebody tells you this is a masterpiece, they are a pretentious donkey. Skip. Bram Stokers Dracula. Like Ivanhoe a surprsingly fun and easy read. It is made as a literary "found footage" story. It's supposedly a collection of letters, diaries and newspaper clippings, collected and curated by one of the protagonists. Lot of subtext, if you can remember that these people's accounts are unreliable. What they say is going on won't always match what Stoker wants you to think is going on. Robert Louis Stevenson: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It's short and way better written by modern standards than any of the previous entries. A superficially easy and fast paced supernatural mystery that you'll get throgh in like two or three hours. With oodles of subtext and themes that you can enjoy or ignore. Cheers

I've just read the first trilogy. One of the most annoying decisions is letting Regal stay in a position of power after he's shown his colours. I would say the first two books are a good length, but the journey in the third seems overly long. Nonetheless, a good enough trilogy to make me want to read more (which I don't often do).

The author was born in the time and location she is writing about. That gives her description of the setting more authority. I assume she has a pretty good knowledge of that setting. The more I listen to your review on the other hand, the more I get the impression that you have no clue about that time.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is also my favorite Bronte novel as well! Some of my favorite classics that I think are underrated are : - Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell - Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell - One Day in the Life of Ian Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn - The Odd Women by George Gissing - The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole - Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins - (Not a Novel but) A Moveable Feast by Hemingway - The Ladies' Paradise by Emile Zola

Got the first 2 trilogies of realm of the elderlings (and soldier son trilogy) all for free with my audible subscription. It was a limited time promotion, but WHAT A GIFT. I started with Liveship Traders (whoops, but it seems like you could start with either liveship or farseer and be okay) and WOW. Best written characters I have ever read. I am almost done with Mad Ship and it just gets better

Ivanhoe is an amazing book. Read it many times. Due for a re-read. Haven't read Book of the New Sun. Need to do it. Lud of the Mist will be read. I really loved Jonathan Strange. For me, Moby Dick is a very funny book. And also like a Ton Clancy novel getting into the nits and bolts of the operation of a whaler like TC described the working of an attack submarine.

Utterly agree. Just read this, and that's wasted time I'll never get back. In short, if this book is an international phenomenon, and regarded as "hilarious", the bar these days is low low low.... This is not funny, it's rapidly anti-Christian, it's misanthropic, and the heroine is a complete Mary Sue. I do not understand the hype, and I'm saddened that a book this mediocre, ham-fistedly written - oh my God, the "dialogue" - and with absolute paucity of "humour" has taken so much oxygen from good books like Katherine Heiny's "Standard Deviation" , or the Queen's Gambit. The first is actually funny, and the second is an interesting, human look at a real character was a real flaws making their way in the intellectual world of chess competition.

Henry was supposed to be important because he remembers, but what really happened is just no chemistry romance. Not even a deeper bond or anything. Just any love she had

This book was hollow to me. After reading it you can really extract nothing from it: no plot, characters are just plot devices, pace ruined, no love or anything between henry and addie… the only interesting thing is her journey because it was the whole point when she made the deal: to be free and learn and explore

I strongly disagree with Dune, the movie completely changes two major characters to literally smack the audience over the head with a message rather than it being subtle. There was many other things changed that made it weaker rather than stronger. I just feel like the director is amazing with visuals but cut important plot and character stuff out to have more visuals in, he has even said he doesn't like dialogue which is odd considering some of the most well regarded movies are dialogue heavy. I do agree with Lord of the rings though. That's how to do an adaption.

The 2002 film with Caviezel is a mediocre attempt to imitate The Odyssey by Homer. Edmond is Ulysses, Albert is Telemachus and Mercedes is Penelope. That wedding ring scene is ridiculous. What would that country girl with fancier clothes have to impress a cultured man like the count? When Cleopatra appeared in Julius Caesar's story, she was cultured and intelligent, which impressed the Roman leader. Most of the screenwriters who work in Hollywood have a low cultural level.

The Lord of the Rings movies are no where close to being as good as the books. They are great movies, but no one can write better than Tolkien, and all of the "changes" were gor the worse. Aragorn falling over the cliff, and floating face up while unconscious is just stupid. Tolkien would never write something so ridiculous. Frodo sending Sam away because he thought he ate all of the Lembas? Please! That takes away from one of the strongest friendship themes of the books. I could go on and on .... The books are the best, truly a once in a generation Author. The movies are good but no for what they are, even great, but they are minimal when compared to the source material.
