Do you backup your photos, or do you prefer to roll the 🎲?

Good video. You make a good point about the drive letters. Syncback has the capability to run a script before or after backup execution. I would think you could do something like placing an empty file on your source drive (e.g. source.txt. This file would be outside of the backup area of course) and then when the backup runs the script checks the source drive letter to see if the text file is there. If the file is not there the backup terminates the job because you must have the drives in the wrong order. Since you're using mirroring I think you're asking for trouble with your current method. All it takes is one night of being all tanked up and boom you overwrite your data :)

I'm backed up fairly well, with periodic updates to multiple HD that are scattered among friends and relatives. But I have to manually drag and drop all the directories. An app that will synch everything would be cool.

SyncBack is perfect for that. It makes a simple one-click clone. Plus you can setup a different profile for each drive you want to backup to in order to make the process even faster.

Thank you for the clear steps to set up SyncBack Forrest. I have 3 portable HD backups and it will be so much easier for me to keep everything current with the software! I use the Portable HD's for 3 years then replacement them with new ones. I started that routine when I lost a HD. I date them so I when to rotate them out of my backups, format them and give them to the Thrift store. I personally wouldn't take a chance on using a HD from the Thrift store but I just can't throw them in the trash. If you have a better solution, I'd like to hear about it.

Windows remember letters for drives, even if they are disconnected. But if some is disconnected and than is new drive connected, new drive can take letter from last disconnected.

Hi Forest, A really great video on how to set up this software for backups. I have 2 questions! 🙂 #1 By creating a mirror copy on the backup drive, you do not provide a way out of recovering any files accidentally deleted. How would you configure this software to guard against this problem? (I have recovered files from other backups using different software in the past.) #2 Can you briefly describe how to automate the backup to run every evening, once a week, etc.? Thanks Forest! Will be sharing this and your overview video on my blog. P.S. Did the school discontinue the blog?

I would suggest using a Synology NAS. it has programs that can be installed on windows. The advantage is tou can install 2 hard drives of the same size. when you copy something to it, tt will automatically create a copy on both drives. if a drive fails, once replaced the information on the good drive will automatically be copied to the new drive. it also has apps for the phone. if you take photos using your phone they will be backed up automatically. I do not work foe this company, but over 10 years ago I had a drive die.I lost a few months of my kids photos.

I do not trust USB external hard drive, they fail all the time. I use 8 bay Qnap NAS with 18Tb Western Digital RED drive in RAID 10. Should be good 4 a while. Don't get me wrong, your right on the spot with your sugestions

I can tell from experience using Raid drives since 1997 that they can fail also. In the software company I owned we would run a Raid that was backed up by another Raid on incremental backup program so that only changes to files were made instead of a whole mirror each time. Then we had a Tape drive that was 10 drives that was done each day at the end with them being changed out with a copy in the bank every other day. Because once we had a Raid system go down and could not recover all the data because many drives were corrupted. A Raid system is another type of external hard drives.

@@markmozley5604 Any tech can go bad, and yes RAID 10 or 5 can also fail. Multiple backups at different location feels safer.

I'm using 27 ext. USB drives. In 22 years there was 1 HD failure. With internal drives I had 2 failures ...

I back up using the drag and drop method, so this software is important. What I want to know is it ok to use (I assume it is) multiple data base (catalogs) on different drives in Lightroom. As with files getting bigger and bigger I find myself moving from 2TB drives to now 4TB drives to either going bigger or adding another drive in my workflow?

If the backup is done from "folder" a, from an internal disk to folder b, from an external disk, is it also necessary to change the letters of the disks, or is it not necessary in that case?
@forestchaput
@forestchaput 9 ай бұрын
Yep! I would definitely still change the letters.

Dumb question re mirroring. Say you re-edit a file in Lightroom, are these changes mirrored in the backup even though you have not changed the file name?

Mirroring to me seems a bad idea because it endangers your original HDD
@forestchaput
@forestchaput 7 ай бұрын
Not really - it just allows you to easily recover from a failed drive as the backup is identical to the failed main drive.
