Kobudo is another martial art from Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate.
It is a weapons art that uses weapons as well as strong physical skills.

Thank you sensei. I'm 62, still strong, use a Jo as a fake walking aid, and will practice these daily. Okinawa is a beautiful island, was stationed there in 80-81.

Thank you. I learned Ryukyu kobudo in 1976. I make nunchaku.7 inch chain or cord,,9 or10 inch straight round wood handles.. hickory, oak, maple..staff to match. I have a 6 foot bo from Okinawa..42 years old....tonfa, sai, kama,escrima....sensei used an oar. I practice every day... Other styles also. Thanks for such a lesson.

He certainly is. I've been a second generation of his for almost 7 years. Seeing him effortlessly glide with the Bo is something to behold. Relax...relax...relax... He's also a super chill guy outside the dojo. Watching him curling the last time he was in the USA was a hoot.

Excellent work, sensei. I train several disciplines, specifically Isshin-Ryū and Tang Soo Do. It amazes me how little my Tang Soo Do art emphasizes the strikes, as you demonstrate, as compared to Isshin-Ryū .

When would you carry a stick to a fight? How often do you carry a stick in public?

When would you carry dumbbells or kettlebells or a barbell out in public? When would you swing a sword in public? When would you carry a bow and arrow in public? When would you hit a heavy bag or speed bag or jump rope in public? When would you shoot paper targets and moving objects in public? When would you would you run, ride a bike and swim (triathlon) all in your everyday life? People engage in those activities everyday, yet no one questions it because they understand these actions have a specific function for a specific purpose. Some do it for exercise. Some do it for stress relief. Some like the historical aspects. Some like doing something in a group setting. Some do it just because they like it and they're good at it. What doesn't make sense to you might make perfect sense for others. In the case of the "stick," sure, we may never use it in an actual combat situation, but that's not its only function in martial arts. When you're training weapons techniques and movements, you're also training your empty hand techniques and movements. They involve similar muscular groups and movements. And yes, you might not ever use a bo in a fight, but someone with a cane might. You may not ever use nunchaku, but you could use your belt. The overall lesson is to be able to be prepared for anything, protect yourself using anything and everything at your disposal.

Is there a specific context where you have to use "shi" rather than "yon" for four in Japanese, or is it down to preference?

Well, I'm not a Japanese speaker, but far as I know, you can say the number 4 in the two ways. In martial arts people use "shi"... at least in judo and karate and by I can see, in kodudo as well. "Shi" sounds like "death" in Japanese and there is a superstition towards it. Maybe that's why it's less common. But it looks like that in martial arts nobody cares about it. I practice Shotokan Karate. We count using "shi" for the number 4. But the forth kata, for example, is called "heian YONdan".

"Bo" means "staff" in Japanese. BoJutsu means "Staff Technique"

It is not Martial Arts. Nor did it come from Martial Arts. It came from self defense fragmented movements from inside the walls of Shaolin. That bo he is using is not of Shaolin and cannot defeat the long bo of Shaolin. This is an imitation of Martial Arts called a self defense system.
