The Best Camps, Bannock and a Bear: Berens River Solo part 4

Starting at the camp below Upper Conjuring Falls, I head back onto the river to undertake the final phase of this journey down Manitoba's Berens River. After Lower Conjuring Falls, I think it's a clear run to Grey Willow Falls but Kettle Falls is more awkward than expected. The camp below Grey Willow Falls was everything I had hoped for - spirit-level flat forest camping with enough breeze to keep the bugs away AND a wonderful view across to the falls. From here life got more interesting. Even the names of the rapids gets more interesting.... Kashepapekamuk Rapids, Kenkwaka Falls, Kaministikoskak Falls. In this section I saw my only black bear of the trip. After this it was down to Sturgeon Falls, the last portage of the trip. Poor weather then came in and hinted at the coming fall season. Despite the wind, I had an OK run down to my pick up at the Berens River Bridge, all fueled by good pan bread/bannock and coffee. A good end to a wonderful trip.

So good at letting people understand the decision making in wilderness travel. Pretty well a full guide on how to travel in this environment. Awesome stuff.

Thank you for letting us ride along! It so much reminds me of my many solo trips in Ontario (longest was 18 days). I can smell the lichen on the hot rocks in the sun, the moist moss after a rain, and the jack pine smoke in the breeze. I long so much to do it again, but obligations at home the past 7-8 years have precluded. Thank you again for the virtual journey.

I used to keep a motorhome in New Zealand where my wife and I overwintered. If we ever happened up at a place where there was garbage we could never settle until we'd cleared it all up. It usually didn't take long and always felt so much better afterwards. Many of these spots had bins provided, too but sadly some could not be bothered. All respect to you for clearing up after others.

Love your canoe trip vids. You quite rightly bemoan the litter problems. We get the same in UK...when I'm on a trip and find a used camp site .. any litter from other previous happy campers I actually try to haul out as much as I can comfotably carry until reaching a proper disposal site. I own an ancient woodland and have a bridleway running through the wood north/south and get a load of rubbish just dumped... budwieser is not the favourite it is Greggs cups and bags. I had a word with a horse rider who flicked a lighted cigarette end into the dry bracken and brush as we spoke.... just got an absolute load of verbal abuse (despite them claiming membership of the prestigious British Horse Society!)... with them saying just because I owned the land didn't give me the right to comment on their behaviour while they were on the bridleway (but on my land/wood)... the world is and has gone mad!

Campsites are interest to talk about. First you want a dry spot so you don't get wet . After that it can be very weather depended, open breezy is good to help keep the biting insects down while a shelter spot out of the wind is good for rain and storms, but you must watch for widow makers that can be blown onto your camp. You can paddle the same trip in different weather and end up using a completely different set of campsites.
