Right now, in 2023, the Asahi Super #Takumar and Super Multi Coated Takumar, are the best inexpensive vintage #lenses one can get to build a video set... Prove me wrong!
⚠️ The video is too long? Here the short version: • The Best Cheap Vintage...

I do not agree that there is no hype for the Takumar lenses. It just seem to have subsided in hype in recent years in comparison to that of Canon FDs, Zeiss, Leicas, etc. I personally believe that most Pentax K series lenses are actually superior optically to that of the Takumar lenses. For instance, the 28mm lenses of the K series were far superior to that of the Takumars especially the legendary SMC Pentax 28mm f/2 "Hollywood." The 28mm f/3.5 K series version is better too than that of the Takumar 28mm. Though your current set is nice it does contain some of the less desirable Takumars. I think that the 135mm f/3.5 is one of the weakest lenses of the Takumar lineup, the late version of the 135mm f/2.5 is superior in every respect, though it costs nearly 4 times as much. $36 is far too much for the 135mm f/3.5, it is probably only worth $10-25. The 55mm f/1.8 and the 105mm f/2.8 are the standouts in your set. From personal experience, the Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8 has amazing center sharpness, is one of the smoothest lenses I have used, and contains pretty good coatings for its age. However, it has pretty poor corner performance compared to my other vintage lenses (due to spherical aberration). If you intend of rehousing, I recommend trying to find the 135mm f/2.5 late version, the 200mm f/3.5, the 35mm f/3.5, 85mm lenses (either f-stop variant), and the 50mm f/4 macro. These seem to be the best Takumar lenses in their respective categories, they are quite a bit more expensive but just optically superior. I actually recommend looking into the K, M, and A series of Pentax lenses. There are a lot of hidden gems in these series. Here are some places I found that rehouse Takumars: facebook.com/kimca1977/posts/sent-to-customers-after-rehousing-work-pentax-super-takumar-lens-set-angenieux-2/2249266218668271/ www.glcinemod.com/english.html www.whitepointoptics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/WPO_rehousing_brochure_2023_small.pdf

I love this type of informative comment. So I pinned it for life. 🙌 The goal is to propose an affordable, inexpensive set of good vintage lenses, so of course it won't include the flagships of the Super and SMC. As you wrote "4 times much."

@@fredr. I do not disagree. Takumars are by far one of the if not the best budget lens sets. I knew that the goal of the video was to propose and affordable vintage set. I just wanted to state that if you plan on rehousing then it is worth investing in the better Takumar lenses. I will propose some alternative lineups which can be found around the same price range: Minolta MC/MD Rokkors MC/MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.7 ($15-20) , MC Rokkor 135mm f/2.8 ($20-30), MD Rokkor 40mm f/2 ($20-30), MC Rokkor 200mm f/3.5 ($30-40), Minolta MC 28mm f/3.5 ($40-50) Total: $170 SMC Pentax M SMC Pentax M 50mm f1.7 ($30-35), SMC Pentax M 135mm f3.5 ($20-30), SMC Pentax-M 200mm f/4 ($30-40), SMC Pentax M 28mm f/3.5 ($35-50) Total: $157

My first vintage lens to add to my Fuji X primes was the Minolta Celtic 135mm 2.8. Got a clean copy for 28 bucks 3 years ago. I could not believe how sharp it was, and I have owned Contax RTS lenses, Canon L, and Fuji X primes like the 90mm 2.0 Something happens to your brain when you get this level of quality this cheap. It becomes your favorite. Now I have a bunch of the fast Minolta Rokkor 50's, and it's more about the RENDERING with those. Admire your energy and fun. GET THE CELTIC.

Indeed A set of Minolta is number one on the list after completing the SMC Takumar. Then I am done. No more vintage until I put them at work. Don’t want to be part of the group who just amasses lenses and does nothing with them.

Hi Fred, I hope you are well. Great video as usual with lots on good information. I love the intro and the end. As Ive said before I love your style. Im interested in getting a set for myself. Can you recommend good places lo look for them?
@fredr.
@fredr. 10 ай бұрын
@marlonwilson6693: Thank you Marlon, and Thank you again for the intro (it took me 3 weeks!). I don't know precisely where to find them. But I know where you should not go: Ebay! 90% of the lenses are overpriced. Only useful if you are decided to put some money on the Takumar gems. I find mines on Facebook Marketplace, checked daily, extended the search on the cities around me. And I am still looking everyday. But... before making your mind on the Takumars, read the comment of Robert, especially his Minolta MC/MD Rokkors recommendation. And if you decided for the Takumars, a 50mm (or 55) should be your first lens. Then the 105 (if you cannot get the 85). ✌️

PDR! Non.

Why do You prefer the takumars over the canon FD?
@fredr.
@fredr. 7 ай бұрын
@coin777, in fact I don't have any problem with the Canon FD, excepted that: - They are currently way overpriced for what they are. - I have some emotional issues with lenses made with plastic. - Their disassembly is painful. Last but not least, recently in the FB group VintageLensesForVideo someone asked what are the most overrated lenses? And seems like everybody out there were agreed on the Canon FD. 🤷
@coin777
@coin777 7 ай бұрын
Im thinking of buying one of them. And in my country the 50mm 1.4 fd is half the price of the SMC takumar. Even the super takumar is more expensive. And that's why im leaning for the FD @@fredr.
@fredr.
@fredr. 7 ай бұрын
@coin777 IMO You should go with the lenses that are the most easy to get in your country, instead of getting headaches with orders, shipping, customs taxes and hidden surprises. For me it is the opposite: FD are more expensive than Takumar and building a set require to order them overseas and having to deal with customs.
